I find the romanticization of Dahmer SO terrifying. He wasn't a cunning genius, he was methodically killing predominantly black queer men, a demographic not cared for by the police. Someone escaped him, gave the police his address, and because of his preferred victims, he got away with it. It's SO distressing to see white women cishet women thirsting over and making edits of him. He's a terrifying example of police nelgigence and his "fanbase" shows how little empathy they have towards him and his victims (many of whom have family still around today since he was caught in '91).

yeah i’m really annoyed they made this disgusting 10 part!!!! netflix series with our generations heart throb (evan peters?!?!?!) it’s just the ted bundy cycle again from a few years ago with zac efron. but even if they were going to make something in depth like that, why such a disgusting man? i suppose one can argue awareness, but i think so many more important things could use a platform like that for awareness.

Yes. Someone needs to talk about them. I hate to say it, but one family Channel that isn’t talked about AT ALL is Colleen Ballinger. I used to love her (still have a soft spot for her), I grew up with her, I saw one of her Miranda shows almost a decade ago. But she is one of many people on the Internet who somehow think it’s okay to feature their kids heavily in their content, make clickbaity thumbnails, and profit like crazy from it. It doesn’t make sense and I’ve been disappointed in her for a long time because of it.

It’s so upsetting because it’s becoming more and more common for production companies to do this sort of thing, I feel like there’s a direct pipeline from true crime makeup videos and podcasts to Netflix and Hulu using these horrific incidents for profit. At some point disrespecting victims and their families became “normal”
the series is so graphic too… like it shows a LOT and i couldn’t sleep this past week because of how horrible it is. these were real people and can you imagine being the victim’s family and opening netflix to be reminded of dahmer??
I watched it and was wondering if they contacted families or gave them compensation. I feel like it shouldn’t be legal. If I felt sick to my stomach and am still processing it I can’t even imagine how the families feel. I think from now on I will stick to documentaries where the families themselves are speaking out for justice.

As someone who was a victim of a serious massacre, I think the news and media goes into WAYYY too much detail about the person who committed the attack, and not enough attention is brought to the actual victims. I didn’t understand that until I went thru it myself it’s fucked

@@brittneybluntville there are so many massacres that leave victims physically injured and also with emotional and psychological distress. Just because they are not one of the deceased does not mean they can’t be a victim or that the event can’t be a massacre just because not every victim died.
@@allisonselman9175 in addition to this, survivors guilt is very much real. A survivor of the parkland shooting then became a victim of the shooting a year after do to survivors guilt. Just because you aren’t dead from the situation doesn’t mean you didn’t suffer.

Kendall Rae is the best true crime creator in my opinion, I like how she goes out of her way to connect with the victims families and give them a platform to spread awareness/tell their stories rather than sensationalising the cases for entertainment.

Regarding 4:50 - people will do this even in real life…… I was at the funeral of a friend who unalived herself and a parent of her friend came up to me and asked “what happened?” and I was so shocked that I said she unalived herself and he asked “how did she do it though?” I was so taken aback….. people have no boundaries……

Actually much worse, dahmers apartment complex was torn down 15 months after he was arrested. Many vulnerable people including gay POC and elderly people were left unhoused. So it’s impossible they threw parties there, it’s been a empty lot since 1992/1993

i came to see if anyone had mentioned this, like that girl from the beach was either lyin or got lied to about who owned the apartment or rented a dif killers apartment

My SIL said the hotel where he committed his first murder is still in use and the room he stayed in has a plaque. She had to stay there (hotel) when in college due to covid distancing.
On men not asking women for help: my friend and I were at an christmas festival in our city when a man was frantic in asking us for a ride bc his car “broke down” and he couldnt get it open. His “wife called him” while he was trying to convince us but we told him to leave and get help from police officers that were biking around the area. He was upset and wanted to pay us, but we were in a less populated area of the festival and were both minors at the time. Red flags all around. Stay safe yall
this advice changed my life. also the whole "don't be polite to strange men" thing really opened my eyes too. we really can't even be helpful or polite without our lives being in danger.

I hate when people say "oh people are so heartless now a days" when they could easily get help from police/taxis/medics etc. Sorry for not going out of my way to drive your weird old ass somewhere when I am alone in my car or giving you my phone. It's very different from someone dropping in the middle of the street, fainting and needing immediate assistance. Even doing that could get you robbed at best and murdered at worst. When i get you to safety and call someone, my work is done there

To anyone in this situation without police around - offer to call someone for them if you really think they need help and they don't have a working phone. Def don't let them in the car with you, especially if you are alone.

fun fact: H.H holmes was caught for insurance fraud NOT murder, but obviously that ultimately lead to being caught for the murders soon after. Despite how sloppy he was he probably would’ve gotten away with it for much longer, but he and his friend got cocky and traveled the country taking turns pretending to die and cashing in on each others life insurance 😭😭

I have a counterpoint for brittany’s comment that ‘the obsession and fawning over serial killers wouldn’t be allowed to flourish without the internet’. I think it’s an issue with media in general. the night stalker, ted bundy, etc had cult followings of people who were in love with them way before the internet. I think it’s definitely more common and easily seen nowadays, like most things are, due to the internets ability to spread information faster than ever before, but I think media outlets have always sensationalized horrific crime and allowed people to separate it from their direct reality.
Only thing I disagree on, people always thought serial killers were hot, there were literally women in the 60s-90s that would flock to court rooms to get a glance at these sick people
Theres a lot of interesting psychology behind Hybristophilia. Including history of abuse being a huge correlation. I think some of these people (most of them being women) also find the notoriety and attention the serial murderer gets to be very attractive, which is also linked to narcissism. On top of that, those who have Hybristophilia are more likely to enter into abusive relationships (are we surprised tho). No matter, the people who have this strange attraction are either delusional or deranged. PERIOD.

I think what they’re saying is it’s easier for these people to be incredibly vocal about it and for the victims to witness it/ for it to become normalised rhetoric because things lose severity online
the hotel season of AHS is actually based off both of the real hotels you mentioned!! H.H. Holmes’ murders inspired more of the layout of the hotel in AHS and March’s killings/obsession. the characters sticking around / not being able to leave the hotel and it’s odd magnetism to guests is inspired by the cecil hotel. it’s an awesomely depicted mix of both :)

I had to stop consuming true crime in 2020. With the added anxiety of the pandemic, it was turning me into a nervous wreck.
Real. I liked true crime but stopped because I realized it wasn't doing me any favors mentally. Society already trains us to be scared of men (for very good reason) but we only hurt ourselves when we continue to add onto that fear. Especially with dramatized retellings from people profiting off of making you anxious and the gruesome nature of these true stories. Even putting that aside, nobody needs to be hearing about the detailing suffering of real people. It's not healthy.
I got EXTREMELY into true crime after my mom died suddenly, it was a way to cope by hearing about other people who lost their loved ones. But the more I listened the more I noticed the cadence of the podcasters - this is not cutesy juicy gossip. These are the stories of real people whose lives were ruined Forever and their trauma is periodically picked up and publicized without any headsup

you getting into true crime after your mom died makes so much sense. I remember being obsessed with horror movies after I got dxd with brain cancer. I would watch at least one movie every day for like four months and it did insane amounts of damage to my mental health. after i started to get better and eventually healed completely, I completely stopped watching horror movies. i haven't watched a horror movie willingly in 2 years. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I honestly think it’s because we want to look at something extreme to make ourselves forget about what we’re really upset about. Or because we want to desensitize ourselves to death so it doesn’t bother us as much.
There’s certain true crime TH-camrs I like , the whole mile higher family (Kendall Rae) because they work with families and bring awareness to the cases and they’re very respectful with how they produce their content. Thanks for the amazing episode today!!❤
Kendall is my favorite as well, she’s so respectful and is honestly the only youtuber I see actually work with families.. and she talks about lesser known cases to give them attention.
Then there’s people like Bailey Sarian who seem.. not too respectful of the topic..
I've tried out Mile Higher but I saw that they spread a lot of misinfo so I wasn't too interested tbh.
Kendall is my favorite! She is so kind and approaches all of her videos with empathy.

I appreciate this episode a lot. As a student studying Forensic studies, Anne Rule was not just “obsessed” with Ted Bundy. She actually worked with him at a Suicide hotline agency. She does not sensationalize Bundy in her book, and does not sensationalize any of the perpetrators in her other books. Obviously not every true crime creator does their work ethically, but there are a few hidden gems that use their platform for good and to raise awareness for ongoing cases or cold cases. Some greats are Danielle Hallan, Stephanie Harlowe, and Eleanor Neale.
The whiplash I felt from euphoria to stunned horror in less than 2 minutes from Sarah saying Appalachia correctly to them admitting to tonguing their mom as a kid has me rolling

Hey Sarah! I'm also from Milwaukee WI - to make you feel a little better, the actual building with Dahmer's apartment was torn down, I believe it used to be two or more identical buildings, but now there's only one. So they probably stayed in the remaining building, not the actual one. (my classmate lived on the same street)
My theory has always been that women are obsessed bc we are trying to predict, prepare, and protect ourselves from potential threats.

I believed this in the beginning, but honestly it's really a reach. It may be like that for some (very rare) people, however most people listen to true crime doc's, podcasts, etc for pure entertainment.
only 20 mins in and loving it so far!! i’m an OG true crime lover and have unfortunately distanced myself from it a lot over the years. there’s so many youtubers and documentaries coming out with true crime content because they know it’s the “new hot thing”. i also have started a career in the legal field and working within it has truly shown me how horrific consuming it can be for the family members. i do still listen to people like stephanie harlowe, dave’s lemonade, and last podcast on the left! also recommend following the families of victims themselves such as sarah turney and kelsi german.

The lesson teaching aspects of true crime are, to me, the most valuable take aways. I know that isn’t what floats to the top and it’s too bad.
Bringing light to the vulnerability of women, people of color, children and other groups is a small push back on those who prey on them. Also…more than anything for me - the repeated lesson of following your gut not worrying about being nice and polite and calling out what you see as dangerous or wrong BEFORE something happens seems so important.

I used to always watch true crime. My best friend was murdered a year ago and true crime on tik tok decided to pick up the story. Literally gave me a full on panic attack seeing it. I was completely retraumatized and it felt like the first time finding out all over again it was horrible and now I understand so much better how the families of these victims must feel. Especially knowing people aré monetizing off your pain is so horrific. Also the amount of comments who are so ignorant and dense and rude make it so much worse

I just started reading the original Sherlock Holmes books and they genuinely are interesting - and I say that as someone who never really liked classic literature! The morbid curiosity and suspense make them legitimate page-turners. They're in the public domain, too, so they're available for free online!
Dude - Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the best books I’ve ever read! Was totally skeptical, but he’s iconic for a reason. I haven’t read the rest of the Sherlock Holmes series, but this comment reminds me I need to read the other three!
I’ve always loved true crime and the love for it increased when I started to live alone as a young woman and experienced horrific men myself, idk what it is. I think it’s because I can see myself in the victim sometimes and it’s almost comforting in a terrifying way
I recently saw a commercial for a Lifetime movie called The Gabby Petito Story and it made me so sick that people are capitalizing off of her murder, especially because it happened just over a year ago.
watch crime weekly!! they’re amazing! they really make sure to be respectful & educational. derek is a PI, and used to be a detective, so he provides very educated insight and helps people know how to arm themselves with education and what to do!
it’s intrigued us because humans are curious in nature but there is absolutely a line that is crossed far too often
when you guys mentioned when religion is behind a crime, i immediately think of lori vallow and chad daybell. i grew up mormon so the idea that someone so praised (mainly chad) being a murderer is so scary. my boyfriend’s parents have chad daybell’s books, and the thought is just eery. religious psychosis and delusions are very real and are very scary. while i don’t believe in god anymore, the fact that they say “god told me to do it” makes my skin crawl.
I grew up mormon as well. I get what you mean about abusers being praised in a religion, like the mormons Ruby Franke and "8 Passengers". They didn't murder, but they did "counsel" people, abuse children, ruin marriages, etc. and the whole time they were praised and were on the recommended therapist list in the mormon church.
I’d love to see you two make a podcast episode on videos marketed for children (like Spider-Man x else and all the weird Mickey animations)!! It’s creepy as hell and I love videos about this subject

And Britany THANK YOU so much for talking about your grandma. my grandma in currently having panic attacks, and I am 100% sure it's because of the horrible shit she sees on the tv and internet, old people are the most affected by fake news everyday, it's insane the amount of shit I've seen and blocked from her phone, but people really forget about the older generations, and they feeling left out of the world has a huge impact on them and us too. This is a really important subject that no one talks about :(

Murder with my husband podcast is one of my favs because they always give light to the victim and their family’s and how us as viewers can help. They actually get emotional when telling the story sometimes and make sure we aren’t idolising these killers or giving them a easier time for what they did
Omg I'm so glad y'all are covering this. Before I even watch, I want to say that the new Dahmer series is not needed and it is giving him more fame that he DOES not deserve. Also my top 3 disturbing true crime stories that actually haunted me for life will be the Toolbox killers, Junko Furuta, and the case with Gabriel Fernandez. Do NOT look up those stories unless you can bear the raw inhumane humanity that this world is. I've also seen Cartel videos of people being skinned alive on reddit just casually scrolling... Kids definitely should not have phones. And i personally want to throw my phone in the trash.

as a small college girl who listens to true crime everyday while driving to class, true crime has probably helped me keep my own self safe. i used to not gaf about my surroundings and went to places at night by myself without even locking my doors but now i’m so so so much more conscious about my surroundings and i’ve probably saved myself more than once. though i agree a lot of people are being so insensitive about these murders (ex. mukbangs, ASMRs, etc.) i believe as long as the person who’s telling the story is being empathetic and actually gives af about the victims and their families, i will gladly listen and learn how to maybe save myself or someone else yk? also watching the interrogations of the murderers and psychologist’s notes is sooo interesting and maybe even teach us how to look for early signs and prevent something terrible. i always feel so sad for every victim that i hear about, no matter how much true crime i listen to (which is probably an alarming amount lol) and always feel so shocked when i hear about more

Mollie Westbrook and Georgia Marie are hugely underrated true crime youtubers and they handle cases they cover with so much grace and genuine respect for the victims and their families. I'd suggest their content to anyone because they don't cross boundaries and dont make a mockery out of victims.
As a family member and a key witness… this episode reigns so true. You see everyone’s comments, the need to know and you want to answer to defend your deceased loved one but you can’t because it never ends. Ever.

I try so hard to make it a positive experience and help them feel safe and supported because that wasn’t something I had when I started going when I was overweight and incredibly anxious. We need to stop making health and fitness unattainable by putting it behind paywalls and bullying anyone who is new to the community. It just feels like another “us vs them” situation where fitness enthusiasts think they’re better than everyone else and don’t want others to realize that they can absolutely get to that same level.
As a fan of true crime there is a line between making content out of peoples tragedies and sharing a story so people aren’t forgotten. There is definitely a morbid curiosity to why people do horrific things but if someone was brutally murdered and suffered at the hands of some sociopath then I feel the least I can do is hear their story. Though I completely understand why people don’t like true crime. It’s extremely important to remember that these are people and that your opinion wasn’t asked or necessarily important.

I turned to true crime after I found a dead body at work. There was a sense of connection and empathy that brought me comfort from the stories. Kinda almost like "people had it worse" and then it turned into a light obsession. I still like true crime, but its less prominent in my life after hearing about how certain creators/documentaries did families wrong.
With the worlds climate, this series has become my one and only source of comfort and safety. Love you both!!!

I absolutely started to go crazy when I was consuming too much true crime content. I was genuinely crying more and genuinely way more afraid my And my partner even noticed and suggested i stop or at least slow down and thankfully i listened cuz its gotten a lot better! Seriously guus whatever content you watch you absorb it
I remember that same kind of morbid curiosity with shows like Unsolved Mysteries, Dateline, Cold Case Files. Only now, we're so much more insatiable for information because SO much of it is immediately available to us.
I can't talk though - one of my other fav podcasts is Chilluminati and sometimes they talk about true crime mysteries. I get the addiction!
(To clarify: I don't think true crime is a bad genre. The fetishization of killers and exploiting and disrespecting real people/families is not good though)
I remember watching them growing up as a kid and some of the cases gave me nightmares 😭 it’s crazy to see how true crime started out as fear mongering compared to true crime online and it’s presented as a big joke
Also we do know the Black Delilah, her name was Elizabeth Short and she was a inspiring actress. We don't know who killed her but we know who Short was more or less

actually in cold blood is so incredibly written. It's written like a novel, so the story unfolds page by page. It's a relatively easy read, especially for the time it came out in

There are some good true crime content creators that are really good like Kendall rae covers alot of cases where cops mishandled alot of cases and nothing gets done about and she often works with the family to get their story out and has donations set up for them. She is amazing! Cause there are alot of cases that are crazy that do not blow up because it is a minority group that is involved and cops keep it suppressed.

I went to college for a political science degree in hopes of going to law school, but I completely decided against going to law school because of the internal battle you have with yourself on just adding to a flawed system. you may be doing good in the world, but you’re also perpetuating a harmful system.

The best true crime podcast by far is Kendall Rae. She's extremely respectful, brings awareness, donates, and connects with the victim's families as well as talking respectful about the victim.

i do occasionally listen to true crime podcasts/videos, but i hate listening to recent cases and try my best to steer away from them.
My French teacher was incredible, we had a café au laît thing we did every month. She was such an incredible woman who really cared about her students. She was taken too soon. And it was heartbreaking to hear. A real light in the world. Good language teachers are incredible

@morborb I agree! These programs just seem to put the violence or the crime in the spotlight, instead of doing anything good. And similar to how they mentioned in the pod it’s all well & good saying it’s bringing awareness to something! But do we need to be more aware of these criminals? Or instead should we remember the victims in a respectful way that doesn’t just revolve around their killer. Especially if the victims families don’t want this kind of thing out there.

tumblr used to be a feeding ground for sensationalizing and romanticizing murderers. the amount of edits i’ve seen of ted bundy with flower crowns, or an edit of the columbine shooters is INSANE
