    I like your idea of the electrolysis bath. I use a lye bath for stripping paint. I saw the idea in a car restoration book years ago. Its basically a 30 gallon drum with a 240volt heater band that you add about 8 quarts of plumber’s lye. It will get to boiling temperature and you use wire to hang parts on the lip. It will take every bit of paint off, but not rust.

    I inherited my TroyBilt from my mother,; who purchased it in 1977. I've used it every year, and about 2014 the original engine died. Th dealer contacted Troybilt and they directed him to Kohler engine which was a perfect match to the tiller chassis. It's now working on it's second life ! I could not ask for a better Tiller !!

      They're the best for their time. Sure there are more fancier ones today, but bang for the buck they can't be beat.

    This morning after running out of gas mine would only run on partial choke, and then it wouldn't run at all. I backed out the screw on the bottom of the carburetor and was surprised to see that it is a jet. Stuck to the jet was a small piece of gravel. Now it runs perfectly.

    Nice find. I just purchased a 1971 Garden Way/ Troy Bilt found on Craigslist. Has the Tecumseh motor . Lady said they no longer us it and it won't start. $ 100.00 . Carb taken apart and cleaned, fresh gas, fired on second pull. Running with a little Sea Foam in it now.

      You'll find that was the best $100 that you can spend. Mine is over 40 years old, and can still do the job.

    I had a 1981 Horse with the K161. Great tiller. I traded it in 1992 for a new Horse with the M8 Kohler Magnum. I still have it and it looks and runs like new.

    I think it was built prior to Aug 77, since I believe that is my built date with a serial # starting with 282

    With all those rocks you should probably take off the Bolo Tines and replace them with Pointed Pic Tines. These tines are made especially for rocky hard surfaces.
    However your suppose to have 2 belts on your Horse model just as mine has two belts also.

    Hi Stephen. I'm Pedro from Vernon. I bought a Troy Built Horse tiller from craigslist too this year. My first one. Paid $400 in April. Replaced the engine with a 6.5HP Predator Harbor Freight engine $99 with 20% off coupon. Nice engine. Had to replace axle, tine, drive pulley seals (5 total). Now seems the transmission slips from time to time. I suspect the clutch wheel is worn. That will be an overhaul project. Have you replaced a clutch wheel on one of these tillers before?
    Nice videos btw!

      Pedro T "turbinedoctor" on youtube has tranmission rebuild videos for this.

    • @stephenfestus9268
      @stephenfestus9268  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pedro. If you're referring to the "dog" clutch in the transmission, no I haven't. It is my understanding that these are pretty much bullet proof. I agree that you should watch the transmission rebuild series from "Turbinedoctor" it's very thorough. The only way the clutch could be damaged would be that the clutch was put into gear while the tines were turning. If the clutch was damaged then it would continually pop out of gear. If it stays in gear, but slips then it's either the belts, or the bearing and race behind the transmission pulley is worn, and this will cause the belts to slip. I hope this helps.

    • @stephenfestus9268
      @stephenfestus9268  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also if at the end of this video you can see the play in the driveshaft caused by a worn front bearing. This would cause the transmission to slip. You can take the top off where the T-handle is to inspect the dog clutch. A bearing is an easy fix, a clutch would almost be a major rebuild. Hope it's an easy fix for you.

      Hi William - turbinedoctor's tranmission rebuild video was an encouragement to watch. Thank for the recommendation.

    • @Supdro

      Hi Stephen - Fascinating. I'll look at the transmission pulley the next time it slips to see if it's the belts. It seems to slip in low gear only. Doesn't slip in high gear. All tilling is done in low gear. Mine is a 1972 Troy Built Horse tiller. On my last tiller run it slipped a lot. I had to jiggle the handles up and down some to get the tiller moving again. I am getting some oil seepage from the front transmission shaft seal, which I replaced brand new about 30 days ago. I'm unsure why that's leaking. Have to take off the engine to take look. I'll check the bearings and race too. Thanks for the tip, Stephen!
