This government is taking us down a path that really scares me. At the age of 76 I've been around the block a few times and our pluralistic system of government selection just seems to be gravitating to the worst possible place. A place that my father fought in a war to protect us from. Very scary indeed. We need people like you, James to awaken the British public to the inevitable consequences of our apathy to our country's vulnerability to these people.

( The economy was slowly begining to grow again under Alistair Darling and Labour after the banker - caused cash of 2018 . The Obourne blocked that and stopped the economy growing for at lest 3 years with needless austerity, causing all sorts of damage socially as well as economically leading to the brexit vote. stoked by xenophobia quite deliberately )

The only threats I've experienced to my life style and the only threats and actual harm done to my standards of living and to the values such as compassion for others that I once thought were a given, have come from this government. And when Jenrick said that the poorest are impacted most, again he must be referring to this government. They make political choices that impose poverty on more and more people living in the UK, while handing out tax breaks for the super rich. And they continue to support the fossil fuel industry, when its clear where the cheapest energy is coming from. This nasty Tory rhetoric is the problem, not those unfortunate to be affected by the decisions the Tories make. In fact when you look at how this government has treated some of these asylum seekers, such as wanting them forced back into the channel. Its not that far from where history has taught us how bad this can get. What is the difference between people being drowned and people being gassed?! Gary Lineker hit a nerve because he was pointing out an inconvenient truth.

I have a solution for Bobby's complaint about refugees settling in "hyperdiverse areas": put them in stately homes of the rich that are occupied by their owners for less than 50% of the time. Pretty sure it would reduce the "hyperdiversity" in the areas he moans about and adds some much needed diversity to hyperaffluent areas. Seems like a win-win to me.

How they have the nerve to suggest that they are the party with the answers, or even any answers, when they are the cause of this decline, beggars belief. Trained medics who could ease NHS crisis stuck in asylum limbo
Doctors and dentists whose skills are being squandered while they languish in the Home Office backlog tell of their frustration
      Miranda Bryant
      Sun 9 Apr 2023 01.00 EDT
After five years studying to become a qualified dentist in his home country of Sudan, Omar (not his real name) spent seven years mainly treating children in Khartoum.
But since arriving in Britain last June - despite a desperate shortage of NHS dentists - the 32-year-old has not been able to put his skills to use.
Despite his in-demand profession, Omar was one of the more than 160,000 asylum seekers still waiting for an initial decision on their asylum claim at the end of last year.
Among those trapped in the Home Office backlog and unable to work, experts told the Observer, there are thousands of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals.
Meanwhile, the NHS in England is facing a recruitment crisis that has left it with 154,000 fewer full-time staff than needed
Others in the same situation are just as frustrated. Dr Shabbir applied for asylum in the UK in 2016, fearing for her life after being threatened with death by family in Pakistan, and has been an asylum seeker ever since (her appeal was refused multiple times; she is now trying to get a judicial review).
A qualified doctor, she has a master’s degree in public health and has passed her General Medical Council (GMC) professional and linguistics exams, but is still not allowed to work in Britain.
Even when their work permit is granted, asylum seekers in sought-after occupations can still face more barriers. Hashem Salim, 28, a Palestinian doctor, arrived in the UK just over a year ago after escaping war in Gaza. But after passing his GMC exams, borrowing money from a friend to register, being offered a job at a hospital in Devon and getting permission to work, he found there were still significant hurdles.
He had to rely on help from a charity to fund his journey from Liverpool, where he was staying in an asylum hotel, and connect him with a host family to stay with.

Immigrants have brought enormous value to almost every nation on earth when they have sort refuge. And those nations are all the better for it. The language we have heard from these MPs certainly lacks Ubuntu, and the only compassion that is being destroyed is that of the average citizen of the UK, for the Tory party. Having spent almost seventy years of my life in other countries, my compassion must always be for the well-being of my hosts. Archbishop Desmond Tutu famously described Ubuntu as meaning "My humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up, in what is yours." Similarly, our humanity today is inextricably bound up in those that land on our shores seeking refuge.

Tories only talk about 'the most disadvantaged in this country' in terms of immigration. Why aren't we asking why we have so many disadvantaged people after 13 years of Tory administration? Especially at a time when we have more billionaires than ever in history and food banks necessary for millions. The worst inequality since the early 20th century. That's not down to immigration - just Tory policy.

Also, because once they get a positive decision, they have four weeks to find new accomodation (having had no work or spare money for as much as five years). They are therefore forced to live with other settled immigrants willing to take them in, though more than half end up homeless.
