[[ Full Description ]]
Back in 2021 I attempted to create a game called "Rogue Royale". My goal was to create a genre mashup utilizing the popular Battle Royale game mode and the limitless possibilities of a rogue-like. The game, while fun didn't live up to my expectations. For a long time it just sat as a project with untapped potential.
Then, in 2023 as I was working on the reflection series for a number of my older games. The game engine I use (Defold) was hosting a video game development competition with the theme of 'infinite gameplay'. I decided to utilize this opportunity to revisit Rogue Royale. Now, 4 months later, the game is completed.
Check out this video to see my development process, the twists, turns, glitches, and ultimately to see if I could truly create a Rogue Like Battle Royale.
[[ About Me ]]
Hello! My name is Ian. I am a hobbiest game developer who uses the game engine Defold. I have made over 30 projects ranging in scope from a few hours to many months. Often times I work with my friends since I am a very lackluster artist, musician, and speller. This channel is geared towards game development logs (Dev-Logs) where I detail my process of building games.

Which do you think was better, "Rogue Royale Classic" or "Rogue Royale Reloaded"?
Reloaded was awesome
This game looks super fun and interesting! If you added multiplayer, some character customization and a timer for player turns that maybe decreases towards the end of the game, I think this game would be a banger that so many people would play!
Thanks for the suggestions! Multiplayer is something I am very interested in trying in the future
the intro was so chaotic (not in a bad way just chaos) but the rest of the video evened it out really nicely, I hope you continue to make content like this and overall nice job!
Thanks for the feedback! My goal was to make the intro energetic to catch people's attention. I'll see if I can create something a little less chaotic for my next video
This was a really cool project! Theres a primal desire in me watching AI fight against other AI would be cool to expand on that idea into a rougelike 👀
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I'm not sure I know of many Roguelikes where the Ai fights each other, or you even have Ai companions for that matter
Top tier editing. Very nice, you earned a new subscriber
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the editing! I spent a solid 2 weeks trying to get this video together (I'm a very slow editor)
Great video and editing dude
Thanks! I appreciate it! Can't wait to see your next void bound DevLog!
really neat idea and execution; got my cogs turning thinkin bout what other elements from other roguelike games you could work into a format like this
Thanks! I love how this game turned out, definitely one of my favorites mechanically! I'm not sure what other Roguelike elements would fit well into it. I considered adding a pickaxe to break through walls and a wood axe to cut through trees. I ended up cutting it since I would have had to overhaul the enemy pathfinding again :(
Thank you for making this video
Thank you for watching the video!
Cool video! :D
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it :D
This is a rogue LITE not a rogue LIKE. In fact, it may not even be a rogue lite.
The number 1 thing a rogue like needs to have is not just random level generation, it's a very diverse range of item types. The items need to have unique properties that synergizes well with some items and not with others. Otherwise, it's just a normal battle royale with lootboxes that you buy before the game starts.
Good point! I didn't get into it a ton with the video but I tried to do this with a perk-card system to create synergies with certain items and play styles
Very nice video, reminds me of a grant wisler skit
Glad you enjoyed it! I had a ton of fun making this video!
@@BunchOfNerdsMakingGames 👍
You're a genius!
Thank you! I'm not sure if I've seen another genre mashup in this style before. It's definitely one of my favorite creations mechanically!
@@BunchOfNerdsMakingGames Yep you're right it's pretty unique. I really like the idea.
@@Die_Blue Me too, I have some other big projects I'm working on, but I definitely want to revisit this again in the future
do you make gui from scratch or you use something like druid or gooey wich one is better for roguelikes and platformers
I used druid for the sliders and toggle buttons. Everything else is custom. In terms of roguelikes and platformers, it depends on your specific use case. One thing I do is sketch out how I want the gui to look on paper (usually a few notecards) then try to find a library that fits everything I need
the game looks awesome
Thank you! It took a lot and I'm super happy with how it turned out in the end!
@@BunchOfNerdsMakingGames i have played the game for 11 hours and now when i loaded the game all my progress is gone
it can be cuz i didn't download it and i played through itch but the game saved fine befor
Unless you cleared your data that shouldn't have happened. Are you playing on the same browser?
@@albinsindt7301 How far along in the game were you? Did the game crash and you were unable to save?
have u found anyone to make music for your games?
In the past I've worked with a musician named Brenna Nicole, she did the music for Drunk Thief and Joining Forces. That or I'll use pre-purchased stuff. Do you have experience doing game music?
i think the title is hurting this video popping off
Yeah, I'm not happy with the title either but I can't think of anything better. Any suggestions?
why not use a library that does pathfinding? Its complicated enough to not write yourself
Good question! I did look into using libraries but they all required that I convert the data into a specific format to use them. I (probably incorrectly) decided it would be easier to implement my own A-star algorithm then to convert the data. Plus I figured that it could be good practice to implement A-Star pathfinding
@@BunchOfNerdsMakingGames I think I went through a similar "path" lol. Since I started using a pathfinding library I don't regret it. Hunting down Pathfinding issues is painful even when you can trust the foundation. I'm a big fan of focusing on the game dev part and trying to stay away from writing game dev tools though.
Hey! I came from discord, and OH MY GOSH what a great video! I had to subscribe, oh my. 👏👏👏👏👏👏🥲👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! The video took a solid 2 weeks of my free time get edited
@@BunchOfNerdsMakingGames wow, really? Well, the effort was worth it in my oppinion!
@@justanicemelon9963 Thanks! I love how the video turned out! If I do another long video I might break it up into 2 parts to get something out sooner
