    Dear Kent, I wanted to say a second thank you for sharing this project idea. Since I watched your video, I've made two paperclip/safety pin bowls, one of all mulberry and one of mulberry with a walnut rim. I made one modification to your technique that your viewers might be interested in. Instead of inlaying the magnets like a pancake, I turned a slot in the bowl rim so the magnets could be inserted thin-wise, enabling a thinner wall. Your instruction continues to be so very well done and top notch. Thanks also for introducing all of us to the tried and true finishes. The varnish oil was used on the Mulberry/Walnut and really looks nice.

    Thanks for all your videos. This may not be about the subject video but let me ask. When finished the first turning of a green wood bowl and its reasonably balanced but still wet, do you think letting it "spin dry" on the lathe for some duration will help to accelerate the drying time ( it sure is expelling lots of water)?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question Sal. It will remove the surface moisture, but it's the deeper cellular moisture that needs to work out over time. Thanks and Happy Turning!

    The trick with installing the magnets is. Don’t put them in individually. Take the stack, and put the stack in the hole and then slide the stack off even withe the surface. This makes all of the magnets flush with the surface, easier to handle, and all the poles are in the same orientation. I learned this the hard way when I got the pole mixed up, and some attracted, and others repelled each other.

    Hi Kent, great idea and video, i've ordered the magnets and will give it a go. On another issue, i did something really stupid and wondered if you had any ideas. I rough turned a very large bowl, about 24 inches off of the end of my lathe. I was really pleased with myself. I let it dry for around 6 months and went to second turn it. I then realised I can't revers it on a jam chuck to reshap the tenon because I can't bring the tail stock up when i'm turning off the end of the lathe. Stupid of me but just didn't think the whole process through. Any ideas would be welcome. Have a great Easter. Chris

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris, I'm guessing the 24" won't fit over the bed that's why you turned off the end? Well, perhaps find another turner with a larger lathe to at least get the tenon re-trued and then you can continue on your lathe. If not, chalk it up to experience. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Hi Kent, I have a question. when I return a dried bowl I always get the exterior round first and then finish with the tenon do you think it matters either way? Great videos by the way, thanks for doing them so regularly.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, John. The second turning is fine either way as long as the exterior is turning smooth, without wobbles, just before you start the interior. If the exterior is wobbling when you do the interior then you will have thick and thin wall areas on the bowl. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I glued some planks of hazelnut tree wood on the top and bottom of a piece of walnut which was just too thin to turn a bowl a few weeks ago. The hazelnut wood was very light, but had this very faint orange hue to it. The resulting color combination looked like a can of Guinness Beer. Bowl turned out nice, very "seventies" somehow.

  • @jimwazlawik4424

    Nice piece. The magnets are a neat idea. Did you specifically put the positive or negative ends of the magnets either up or down? I noticed in your demo that the paper clips seemed to stick in some spots but not in between. Wonder if that was the reason, they weren't consistent in orientation? Peace

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't orient the positive and negative. They are only located on two sides. I probably could have put them all the way around. Happy Turning!

    Kent - Love this video thank you! Two questions; where were you from in Illinois? And do you have any recommendations for clear food safe epoxy for filling holes or gaps in bowls?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark, I grew up close to Kankakee. Hm? not sure about a truly food-safe epoxy. The general thought is that most finishes are "safe" once they are cured, but not sure about epoxy. Happy Turning!

    OK, I'm lazy. Since the magnets are hidden, I wouldn't bother with the indexing wheel, or epoxy each magnet individually. I would just eyeball the holes and smear on the epoxy when I was gluing the rim. It's great to watch such careful work, though.
