I've lived here all my life and couldn't imagine being anywhere else. After 43 years there are still many beautiful places I've never seen. Yes some areas of town are not the best but you find that in every city.

I was born and raised there, from 1966 to 1987. It was a pretty good place to grow up, at least at the time, but there wasn't much oportunities, so, like many of my friends, I left. It seems like a lifetime ago and like another life. But I have many good memories. Hello to friends and family who still live there!

I am UK born and lived in SSM from 1968 to 1970. Lived on Goulais Ave. I often look up vids online to see how it has changed as I loved it there. I would LOVE to go back, but that can never happen, sadly. My mother and I have many friends who we still keep in touch with after all these years. You make a friend with a Canadian, you make one for life. Sadly not true of other countries it seems. I was 8 to 10 years old at the time but still have a lot of great memories, jumping off the bridge at Echo Bay (my dad bribed me lol). Driving on the lake at Gros Cap in my dads friend Jerry's Volkswagen Beetle when it was frozen over (not me driving obv). Great times! Miss yoo Soo :(

If you lived near the "townhouses" across the street from Wright St and Munroe Park, PLEASE, get a hold of me STAT!! I'm trying to find out the origin story of how that townhouse came to be, even if its just the smallest detail. I lived there my entire child hood to 18, and have ZERO idea of its history or surrounding area during that time period! Anything at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I searched for Sault Ste Marie on TH-cam JUST to confirm that my memory was correct from when I was in hotel customer service in South Dakota, and it is. Our biggest city is Sioux Falls, and "Sioux" is pronounced EXACTLY the same way that you pronounce "Sault" (and Sioux Falls is nicknamed "Soo Foo" with exactly that spelling, so the "Soo" sweatshirt was kind of on-topic ;-) ).

I see this was uploaded a couple years ago. Sadly the Sault has fallen into decline in a very short time.
The city was, and could be again, a great place. Sadly due to a significant drug addiction problem which the city council will not address, and the resultant increase in crime that usually accompanies it, there may be better options than moving to or investing in the Sault.

I think Itaians mostly, many masons built city buildings & locks in the river. Finns also worked in the bush with french too as well as carpentry. More diversity today. The steelplant is the major employer.

Are the citizens of the Sault happy with the coming transition to electric arc furnaces at the steel mill and away from the coal coke powered blast furnaces? Sault could be powered by new and cheap wind farms.

@@cruisinginmy94 A lot has changed in 10 years since Ontario has its feed in tariff policy. Now the costs of wind and solar PV are below every other source. New wind on the prairies is being sold to utilities at 3.5 cents per kilowatt hour. This is why renewables are booming on the prairies and around the world.

Aargh,. It's not "Soo" or "Salt" "Saynt" Marie anymore than nuclear is pronounced "Noo-kyoo-ler." It's a French name, the 't' is silent, and it's "Saul." How freaking hard is it and why does everyone in that region insist on saying it wrong? "Saul Sante Marie." EASY!

LMFAO please tell me another fairytale. When in the Zoo you will quickly realize why they built two bypasses one to get to the border and one to totally avoid the city. W5 did a great documentary on the city. Vice even picked it up. Lock your car and turn your alarm on and be careful of where in town you are walking especially after dark. You missed one of the best attractions the zombie apocalypse of strung out people. Don't forget about the friendly people.

@@cruisinginmy94 Verifying your statement as my friend called it "Sewer Suck Misery" due to the steel plant going under and then being sold over and over to be finally pieced out to several different companies and countries. The heart of the matter is simple....the days of having a job for a company like steel mill and retiring with a pension, this was ground zero for that evaporation to what it is currently today. You don't have to play the lyrics "Downbound Train" by Springsteen to see it. "I had a job, I had a girl, I had something going mister in this world. I got laid off down lumberyard, (steel mill) our love when bad, times got hard." LOL!!
