Bought my second in March. Had to fly from Ky to Fla to find a manual. Then drove it back home. Worth it though, Especially since it was snowing in Ky at the time.

Wow, can relate to Russell's story quite a bit! Got mine without knowing a ton but just loved how obscure it was so I had to have it. Learned how to drive stick on it from my dad, and the first night I drove it alone I was clocked 1km/h below getting impounded. Had tons of fun over the years as I went on roadtrips, wrenched on the car and had quite a few mods, met tons of Volvo enthusiasts, and it helped kickstart my career in the automotive aftermarket industry :) Sold it 2.5 years ago, and I miss it daily. Wish I could have kept it, but it helped pay my way through university. Would love one again!!
Finally, a story time video on my car!! I have a tuned grey 2004 Volvo S60R making around 300 to the wheels! I wonder if mine is a unicorn as well, only 1500 6 speeds were imported to the U.S. that year..

My 06 R was solid as a rock until I sold it at 170k miles. Didn't have to add any oil between my 10k oil change intervals. I towed with it a lot too (3000+ pounds). Awesome tow vehicle actually.
I own an M66 '07 T5 S60, it gets 298 metric hp and 306 when it just had an oil change, though it has been chipped to 310 at the crank, but it's FWD. Its top speed is 263 on the speedometer, but 252 gps (limited), 0-125 mph : 19.5 seconds. I have had it for 4 years now, colour 452. I'd only switch it for an R. BSR exhaust. Love it to bits. At 176 000 kms now.
Got my first car 9 months ago. A teal blue 2008 Volvo s40 2.4i manual for $500. My uncles boss was selling the car and it was his daily driver but needed to get rid of it because he was retiring. Has 208,000 miles on the clock which fortunately are almost all highway miles. However it was regularly maintained and I have every single receipt from each time it was taken in for maintenance since 2008. While my uncle was test driving and I was with him (I didn’t know how to drive manual) my father asked him why he was selling such a good car for so cheap. He simply responded with “I just want someone to enjoy my car as much as I did and selling it for cheap makes people appreciate the car even more.” In the end it only needed new tires and brakes. Volvo FTW!
Demetrios b awesome bro....best of luck.... first car and a stick....you’ll make some awesome memories !!! :) EVERYbodies first car should have a similar storyline or similar past , mine did :) FUN times
I own an 04' S60r. I popped 3 tires the first year I owned it (I'm in the North East). It has the worst turning radius of any vehicle I've experienced. It drives like a dream in a straight line/medium curves. I've driven by cops going at least 90-95, multiple times and for some reason this car is invisible to them, they've never come after me.
Love S60Rs actually born and raised in Pittsburgh and that car thru the corners those cars are a hidden gem. I wish they would have been more popular. They were absolutely great
My second car was a 91 240. Such a fun car. Loved how well it did in the winter being a Swedish-made car. Started right up, heat worked like a damn sauna, and the car gripped the road relatively well for RWD. Unfortunately was very expensive to maintain as a daily driver with 200k+ miles on it and parts have started to dry up recently. Even had to import brake dust shields directly from Sweden, as no US parts place or dealer has stocked them in quite some time. The prior owner really didn't take good care of it and it had to eventually be put out to pasture. If given the chance I would definitely buy another Volvo, but it has to be a turbo model.
I knew a guy who bought one of these thing in the mid 2000’s. This was during my modified wrx phase. He said his car was faster. Uh... He then takes me for a ride. His car was modified with downpipe, larger intercooler, bigger turbo, tune, etc. This thing absolutely flew! Was faster than my buddy’s C5! Total sleeper.
I had an 02 S60R AWD that was phenomenal. I got it up to 158-160 too going down I-70 in MD. Unfortunately 3 years ago the engine blew, she lived a good life tho bought her with 120k miles she passed into car heaven with over 300K miles. The only downside of getting one of those only unicorn volvos, they are just funky cars. Mines was this ocean blue-teal color, with cream interior with body color inserts and a wood grain accent on the dash. Was a hot mess too look at but the Swedish know how to put a car together mechanically.
I started with an s40 as my first car and now have a turbo s60 and they are just intoxicating cars. I’ve done 85 in the turns in my s60 and felt unbelievably stable.
I had a s60 that didn’t have a limiter. Got it to 171mph on the i5. I replaced the fuel pump and injectors with a higher volume installed a chip, a split second boost controller all came in a kit I found in the Swede speed forum. It made a little over 330hp. it ran a high 12 after it was stripped of all its interior. It surprised a lot people out at tuner night at Famoso raceway.
S60R is sought after in the Volvo community, it's one of our top dogs so to speak. We try to keep to ourselves though so not a lot of people know about Volvos and the community
I love fast Volvo's. Its so great to see a manual trans version in the US. I don't blame him for wanting it back. I wouldn't have sold it in the first place. Very cool. Thanks.
Stories like this make it all worthwhile. (Used to work 80 kms away, so l'd take the Toll Road in my 79 316 dual-body carb p.o.s. at an *average* of about 140km/h and 5 mpg...) hehe
Aye I hope this brings back the S60R into the streets, I am driving a passion red with full valence kit it smokes them stis and evos with a tune no problem
My wife has had S60’s since 2002, she drives an XC60 now and my youngest daughter has an ‘05 S40 with a 2.5t. It’s like a go kart, wish my first car was that fun! I’m a Chevy truck guy, but want an S40 as a daily driver.
My neighbors have that exact Volvo. Same color, those big spokes... And it sounds awesome when he pulls in. I still have my T5 Turbo (I wish it was AWD though)
My friend had one of those back in high school. His parents had no idea what it really was, thinking it was just a regular old volvo. Boy were they wrong. Good memories in that car
i have a hand-me-down '92 940 gl with 330,000 miles and while it definitely shows its age (wiring going wonky, parts expiring) it can still keep up with modern traffic, and even with a bad steering rack and worn to hell tie rod it hit 100 at 3600 rpm. god i love my swedish tank!
I owned a 2005 S60R 6spd. It was water damaged title. But with many many mods, I managed 168mph Somewhere between FLW Mo and Louisville Ky. Still have it saved in my old Garmin. Today I own a 2004 R with 125K on it. Love these cars, Hoping to reach 500hp with it.
Volvo! I just got my first one, a S60. It’s absolutely amazing! I think lm a Volvo addicted for life! The car is luxurious, beautiful, comfortable, reliable and incredibly powerful!
Great vid ! Bought a 91 740 turbo at the night sale with a blown manifold gasket. (sounded like a lawn mower)for almost nothing . Clean , White tan leather 17" directional wheels . replaced the manifold gasket. That car was a blast . Was a fun cruiser that would eat a 5 liter mustang alive. Sold the car to a man in Tennessee for his sons first car. def a sleeper.
a few years back I bought a 88 740 NA with a broken valve spring for 800 bucks lol unfortunately I wasn't careful enough putting the engine back together and ended up putting the head gasket on 180 degrees upside down at 2am so it didn't run all too well after that :/ but it was fun in the snow when I had it running. the 850 t5 I bought afterwards was much faster though and I had a lot of fun with that although I didn't get too crazy with it... only got it up to about 110 or so once.
I got my '05 S40 T5 (6 speed manual) a little over a year ago. I remember one night, in Texas, right after getting a full set of nice new pirellis, I tried to see how fast it could go. I got to 140 mph on SW Loop 410 before the thing began demonstrating it's aspirations to become a plane. I don't know how I never got pulled over in Texas. I still love driving my bad bitch little swedish sleeper.
Fun thing is that here in Sweden those cars are super rare! If you ship one over you can sell it for a fortune. I have an 855 T5 and that sob is an Italy import.
Having driven an S60R a must call BS on the notion of one being able to negotiate a hairpin turn... unless it's a 200 foot wide hairpin or involves a 5 point turn. ;-) But seriously, aside from the battleship turning radius, failure prone stock suspension and angle gear failures they are awesome cars. The last two issues can be fixed and I suppose you could learn to cope with the lazy radius in time. The 20V turbo five is a great engine... I'm most familiar with the Audi 20V fives but like them in Swedish bricks as well.
4 bolts to remove the rubber/metal steering stops on the control arms. Doesn't make a huge difference but it does help. Still have to do it to my 06 V70R M66
we had 2 an 04 flash green and an 07 grey. Absolute awesome cars but 100% agree the turning radius was god awful especially with the 18” wheels. Replaced the angle gears in both and can’t tell you how many times the suspension was repaired.
Only noticeable in two scenarios, one being parking lots and the other u-turns. But yes it's definitely annoying.. just have to point out it doesn't effect normal road or track driving
Do like those I5 from Volvo, can be quite quick, but also just relaxing as their revs are just so low when cruising. My dad has had a few XC70, that slight lift to the wagon just makes them look great and they are comfy as can be.
My first car was a 1999 S70, a 19 year old car by the time I got it, I was the 8th owner. About as basic as they got: no turbo, no AC, Gasoline fueled 5-cylinder. I've been told that she had been treated rough with barely any maintenance, but no oil leaks, no power loss, started and ran like clockwork, just had some electrical issues in the front passenger door and I had to replace the radio antenna because the old one was bent. I've been through a road-safety course with her, she was the largest and oldest one there, and she kept up with much younger Golfs and Peugeots in the safety department. I had to get rid of her for two reasons: fuel consumption is no joke on a big car like that and the alternator was starting to have gremlins after 20 years of use and abuse. My dad traded it in for a Renault Twizy and I got his 2014 Ecoboost Ford Focus, a much better car in every objective way compared to an old Volvo, but it lacks the character of the ol' gal.
Sweep car at the tarmac Rally Tennessee in 2005 was an unprepped S60R. Dude was putting on a show. Commonly heard over the radio: "Please tell sweep to COOL IT...!!!"
Damn. I hope this guy got his car back. That's a badass sleeper. I have an 850 and a Mercedes E550 and I saw a grey s60r with a 6 speed manual for sale for 6500 that I'm thinking of buying
For anyone who would like to tune a Volvo, go for a 2.3 liter 5-cylinder Turbo or R, 850/S/V/C70, front wheel drive, manual transmission, take the crankshaft from the 2.5T and it's ready for bigger turbo etc. 500-600hp at the crank and could be used as an everyday driver. Clutch has to be replaced at 400hp but transmission should be good for 600hp.
Had the T5 in a ST Focus 07 6 gear Getrac with Borg Warner turbo. Catback and induction kit, aftermarket boost controller. Just 250hv and over 320Nm of torque. Torque comes just under 1500rpm.
I would love an S60R but truthfully my desire is for an S40 T5 AWD and maybe get some Evolv upgrades. It's like a swedish Evo.... I raced one in the SRT on a curvy road, and on straights I was pulling out but in the corners he was hard on it
I bought one new in 2004. I hated it for one main reason: THE TURNING CIRCLE IS BIGGER THAN AN F-150. I once had to do a little 3 point turn in drive thru to keep from curbing the rims. Oh yea, with stock suspension it still scraped everywhere. The push button suspension was pretty crazy though. "advanced" felt like a truly track only setting. Oh and how could i forget!? The awd was bullshit. The output shaft from the front wheels wore off it's splines in about 3 years. After that is was fwd only.
Iv got the d5 5 speed manual and even that's a sleeper, it's the euro 3 older d5 and I love it. And this is coming from having all the civics Ek9, ep3, k24 frank and a mx5, the Volvo was supposed to be the sensible daily but it's a hoot to drive
Manual turbo volvos are a thing of beauty.

I have a 2004 S60R! You either love or hate the spaceball
Nick I have one too I love it
Space ball and Pegasus wheels= darn fun car to drive!
The only started making them in 04 though...at least in the states.
I recently purchased an 04 m66 V70R, I'm in love with it, its costing me all of my money for the repairs it needs, but god is it an incredible machine
We love our S60 turbo. It's fast and been in 2 accidents where we drove home and the other person left on a tow truck.
The headlight wipers tho
Sam that's that Rolls Royce shit right there
creep life psh RRs don’t even have them!
It's meant for the snow :)
They work great for the snow we get
I started with an s40 as my first car and now have a turbo s60 and they are just intoxicating cars.
Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is an awesome time. Would love to see VINwiki booth!
(Used to work 80 kms away, so l'd take the Toll Road in my 79 316 dual-body carb p.o.s. at an *average* of about 140km/h and 5 mpg...)
hehe
Dude i love volvo's so much they are insane my dad used to own t5r and it was fast it would keep up with r32 skyline's with hardly anything done to it
Aye I hope this brings back the S60R into the streets, I am driving a passion red with full valence kit it smokes them stis and evos with a tune no problem
A volvo s60r is my dream car and that year model too. I have a volvo s60 non turbo with 240,000 miles and still running great
I have one in California
Bought an s60r and I absolutely love it. Great first car.
My 2002 S80 Premier with the T6 engine is the real sleeper. Taking off is a blast especially when the front tires go up in smoke.
I absolutely love my S60R
i have a hand-me-down '92 940 gl with 330,000 miles and while it definitely shows its age (wiring going wonky, parts expiring) it can still keep up with modern traffic, and even with a bad steering rack and worn to hell tie rod it hit 100 at 3600 rpm. god i love my swedish tank!
You were so lucky to have experienced a Volvo S60R! Good luck getting it back.
The Cruisin' USA analogy was spot on 😂 great video as always!
my boyfriend has one literally exactly like this except it's an 05, black paint with the space ball manual lmao
it's SUCH a cool and fun car
If there was an example of what a "volvo owner" looks like. This guy would top it.
We went to a Volvo launch event for these cars back in 2003. Great cars! 2006 V70R with a manual trans would still be great.
I had an s60R for about a year until I broke engine and it went through 3 head gaskets before I traded it. Most comfortable I’ve owned, great car.
I had a 73 242 in high school and a 65 544 later. I loved both of them.
I had a 850 T. Loved it so much
Fun thing is that here in Sweden those cars are super rare! If you ship one over you can sell it for a fortune. I have an 855 T5 and that sob is an Italy import.
I grew up with older RWD turbo manual volvos, all the way up to 850Rs and V70Rs and they are amazing cars, especially when modded.
Darin Nederhoff , 100%!!! I hated that about my R. Didn't notice when i bought it.
Darin Nederhoff Battleship turning LMFAO
My first car was a 2003 Volvo S60 T5. Basically the same car but FWD. it was actually a lot of fun
Love the S60Rs owned two, and boy do I have some stories... Regret selling my last one....
Sweep car at the tarmac Rally Tennessee in 2005 was an unprepped S60R. Dude was putting on a show. Commonly heard over the radio: "Please tell sweep to COOL IT...!!!"
Gotta love the 850 Turbos 👍 there's a red one that used to drag at sears point and would beat almost everyone. Crazy fast car.
I have 2 turbo Volvo’s at 18 and it’s amazing
Damn. I hope this guy got his car back. That's a badass sleeper. I have an 850 and a Mercedes E550 and I saw a grey s60r with a 6 speed manual for sale for 6500 that I'm thinking of buying
I watched this video 2 years ago, came back now that I have bought one, same spec as the one in the video. 2004 M66 Black S60r with the same interior.
I love my Volvo, not the high pressure turbo but still goes decent on the highway.
I had a 740 turbo with a bunch of motor mods done to it I loved taking my friends out in it getting thare impression on my old volvo wagon
I’m so proud to own one of these cars.
Same here! Just picked up a 1996 850R sedan a few months ago with 75,000 miles that I'm restoring and I love it to death :P
Torque comes just under 1500rpm.
me and my dad literally just bought a 2005 volvo s60r exacts spec different color absolute blast of a car
Also on my first night with my S60R I caught a G50 911 at a light around 1:30am, 0-100 he never stood a chance!
I have two cars a 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 and a 2007 Volvo S80 V8 AWD. I love them both.
@5:24 There's an amazing AirBNB on that hilltop in the background in Malibu!
I would love an S60R but truthfully my desire is for an S40 T5 AWD and maybe get some Evolv upgrades. It's like a swedish Evo.... I raced one in the SRT on a curvy road, and on straights I was pulling out but in the corners he was hard on it
loveableterror I have a 2010 S40 T5 with a manual transmission, AWD and Polestar tune and love it!!
164mph/264kmh, sweet! I had a 2004 v70 2.5T 209hp manual and I loved that car. But could only reach 151mph/244kmh on E4 here in Sweden...
I may be a bit biased because im swedish but Volvos are probably some of the best cars you can ever buy.
I LOVE MY 2014 VOLVO S60 T5 AWD!!!
I used to have one!!! I miss that car!
I own 144hp v70 volvo, -98model. That 5cyl is great fun, althought its not that powerful, smiles per miles is trough the roof.
fzz I have a 96 850 glt with the 5 cylinder and totally agree 0-60 is fun but after that it’s a bit slow
A buddy of mine has a 850R swapped 740, sounds great and drives like a beast.
Trough
I love my 850 R. Performance Volvo’s may be weird but man are they cool.
Good looking car! Something special with black S60`s!
