Exactly, i used an insane amout of tries to do it. I get to go skeeing 2 weeks (vacation) a year, i used 3 days and i guess 15-20 tries, out of those i got 3 good ones. The rail was a bit wierd, but i thought it was the easiest. I now have to wait to next year which is sad but its aight.
Awesome stuff! i know it sounds and seems intimidating, but with rails and boxes, speed is gonna be your best friend! in my experience it is much easier to maintain balance on a rail when i have some speed behind it, if its too slow the balance becomes difficult and the rail will spit you off of either side. Keep it up man!
This is solid progression for your first day. I remember that commitment being so scary the first time. Once you start to feel more comfortable you'll realize it's actually a lot easier to hit rails with more speed, the momentum keeps you balanced. Boxes are a great place to start learning tricks too, I learned swaps and britney/kfed on narrower boxes. Nice work man!
bro this is so relatable, an advanced skier in everything else BUT park, jumps and tricks and steep stuff dont scare me but the thought of busting my ass on a hard metal tube just scares the crap out of me, this is inspiring me to try and hit some rails next time im up, keep at it tho man
Ahh I've been hitting the jumps sometimes but avoiding the rails for the same reason. This gives me the confidence to give it a shot. It would be great if TH-cam would stop recommending clips of people smashing their backs on rails.
Yeah I totally understand. Just push through the fear and keep your front foot on the rail heavy. I would recommend practicing it on a box first. Thanks for watching
Go for it bro, you got this! I just started learning it this month and it's honestly not that bad. Even when you slide out and fall (which you inevitably will), it's not a painful fall the vast majority of time. Dedicate a few hours to it and you should be able to get a few good slides on a fat tube by the end of the session!
I have only just started trying to do rails too, I tried practicing on a box and totally wiped out jumping off it haha. I would love to see more of the series
When I was learning rails I found that going faster then you feel confident with helps alot, speed is your friend, just gotta make sure not to slip out
Hell yeah! I learned to ski last year (lifelong snowboarder) and just starting to do straight airs on skis this season. Maybe rails up next, thanks for postin your progression!
Same actually, just switched; 2nd season on sticks and hit my first medium jump last trip but haven't made it to rails. WIld how I can be comfortable cruising down blacks at highway speeds but freaked out hitting a 10ft rail 6 inches off the ground at 10.
Please make a longer version of a video like this, its so entertaining to watch this, as you progress and get better. PLEASE MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS AND LONGGERRR :)
I just got back into skiing after doing a little bit as a child, and I really want to learn rails. I'm decent enough at skiing on my own, but I think it would be fun to be able to hit parks.
This is my backyard resort. Love Lee Canyon, absolteuly ate shit last week and letting my shoulder heal up. Expecting monster snow this coming week though, over 20" 😍

Great job man and you have every right to be scared of the park becuase you can mess up your body pretty bad. I rode park a lot in high school and after a ton of back pain and messed up knees I tend to stay away. Now I have too much chronic pain for someone in their 20's lol.
nice progress man, definitely good that you learn hitting from the side first. just try and pop harder and get a good 90 deg rotation and youll be locking into them in no time
I'm about at your level. I'm trying to learn some park skills in my late 50s. I can do some things, like hit a jump switch and land switch, or hit it going forwards and 180 to land switch. It's all just step-by-step for me. Better late than never.
as someone who's never really been a park rat but always wanted to be, this is so relatable in the fear of hitting rails. still have yet to hit one. i'm more interested in learning how to do bigger jumps as far as park goes but i have nobody to go with and i feel like i'm gonna break something or get a concussion if i get too eager lol
Just like you I'm also learning on my own. Sometimes I talk to skiers in the park and ask for advice, you should do the same. You also might make a friend doing this too so win win. Stay safe!
Just accept that you are gonna fall learning new tricks and rails. It's the price of admission to get better in the park. That's what I tell myself so I hope that helps you!
This week i hit my first rails after 15 years of skiing and i can tell you that it hurts alot more if you dont commit. If you commit usually the worst that happens is that you slide off. But if you dont commit you can land on the rail and that hurts like hell.
My issue is all the rails at my local hill are sketchy as hell, all of them require a high pop and they ride up so by the end of it you're 4 or so feet off the ground... One day
The more speed the better. Seems counterintuitive but the slower you go, the more time you have to balance on the rail. When your going faster u just kinda glide. Then when you get more confident slow down and work on pretzels.
As an adult who also didnt ski park as a kid, rails absolutely terrify me as well. Job well done.

Im trying to learn to park ski this year this gave me more confidence thank you
Yeah man! Hope you kill it in the park this year 🤙
keep up the work man I love how people try learning stuff on skis and snowboards!

It’s a great progression in one day. Continue like that men !

Sick Dude! I am also gonna try to hit the rail in a few days!
HA HA. Having just learned rails this season this is SO relatable. Great job. You should practice on some skinny boxes to get reps in that'll help.
You're right I should practice a bit more on the skinny boxes. Thanks for the advice!
Gotta be the first time ive seen someone attempt a rail for the first time without eating it. Impressive.
Yeah I got lucky
SPEEEEEEEEEDDD!!! Speed is the way to go on rails easier to balance and it goes by faster!

Hehe me too just used to jump as a kid and only learned to rail recently, terrifying but rewarding when you learn it.
I'm terrefied of the jumps. I always seem to land in aqward positions but good on you!
You went from barely being able to do a rail too being able to do a rail super smoothly and just one video

Just some tips, try to have more speed, turn your body 90 degrees and look at the end of the rail, it helps a lot just spoting where you want to go.

Focus on jumping high, and getting your pop good. Then getting the rotation, then getting ur balance down on The rails.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope your resort figures it out. My resort doesn't build good jumps so that's what I'm dealing with over here. 🙃
My biggest tip would be to just be confident and don’t be afraid to ask other people how to do stuff, 99% of the time people will help you.
Yeah, there are very few park skiers at my resort. I met one and he gave me great advice about rails. Thanks for the tip!
So much progression in a day wow! Try to learn how to pedal, pedaling helps you balance yourself!
