  • CRF300L OHLINS YSS: i couldnt believe what happened!
ive been doing a build series here and in my facebook group on converting a crf250l to 301cc plus losing as much weight as possible.
part of the build was fitting a YSS rear shock and OHLINS front forks.
i bought those as new but 2nd hand so no info on which weight spring or what weight oil was used.
theres a choice of 65kg to 85kg and 85kg up. either way im 90kg in full gear so if it was the 85kg springs then im good.
ive never been a fan of stiff suspension off road, it needs to be soft n plush to skip over rough terrain but ok, i got the parts for a good price n im in the heavier weight ballpark so..... SEND IT!
oh lordy lordy NO! it was 'effing disgusting! im bounching up n down, skipping side to side and the bike was totally unrideable. so much so that i scrapped my ride, took the bike home n switched ecus to my stock M suspension bike and restarted the ride.
now i have to figure out what to do with that 'brand name' shit cos its useless offroad.
theres a few parts to this video, uploaded 2 a day.

Really interesting. I put a Nitron on my rear and a YSS spring on the front. Love the difference it made. Far too soft in my opinion as standard. But then I am 110kg with kit. Considering the Ohlins on the front though

Oh yeah! What a tale that turned out to be. I was sold the front n rear suspension as 'fit 250l' the rear was a 420mm rally shock! i modified the top mount to get it down to 405mm and wound the spring right off to get 120mm sag. More on that at the end!
The front forks measure exactly the same as my 250 M and those are freely for sale here so i believe they are M forks not L. I dont have confirmation of this but i believe (from riding L and M bikes) the M spring is slightly firmer in stock form.
Anyway, whatever ohlins was in there was rock hard so i stripped the fork out and found 2 completely different fork oils! The spring side was red and probably a 10W. The damping side was brown and like gear oil! (These were built by a 'professional' shop).
The ohlins spring took over an hour to get out, it was almost impossible to get the snap ring out due to the preload on the spring. Eventually i got it out and it was an 85kn. It was exactly the same length as the stock spring that came in an ohlins box with the forks. Then when emptying out the oil to clean the fork a 1" aluminium spacer fell out..... so that answered the rock hard fork plus unable to get the snap ring out.
I built it back up with the stock spring, snap ring went in with my fingers and refilled with 5W oil.
The rear. I wound the rebound clicker back 5 clicks to check it was free and then back 5 to its original setting when i got it ...... and forgot to set it on the bike.
Turns out some twonk had wound it 35 clicks to full hard!
The bike is quite rideable now but i feel the front is still too hard so im going to try a 250L spring some time.

See the message above for details, the yss and ohlins i bought were completely set up wrong by the people who built them. I sorted it out and it works a lot better now.
