"Go Tonight" - The Mad Ones Musical ANIMATIC

Hey hey hey I have awoken from my two-year slumber -- and it only took a global pandemic to make it happen! Also, I know there's only like 3,000 people currently alive that know The Mad Ones - even I had to buy the physical libretto to find out what this show was about. Due to this, I tried to include as much exposition in this animatic as I could without becoming painfully heavy-handed, but I fear that there's still a lot not coming across. That's why I wrote a little summary here; hopefully this helps contextualize the animatic and encourages you to listen to the entire soundtrack (which slaps btw).
THE MAD ONES SUMMARY:
Sam (the girl with the black hair) is a recent high school graduate trying to work up the nerve to leave the safety of her home and go to college. This is so difficult because she has a lot of unresolved feelings involving her best friend, Kelly (the girl with the blonde hair), who tragically died in a car crash during their last year of high school. And, basically, the whole show is Sam revisiting her memories in her imagination and trying to come to terms with what happened.
“Go Tonight” is the climax of the show (or, at least, I think it is?), which is incited by a call from her mother, who delivers the news that Kelly was hit by a car. Then, throughout the song, Sam relives the last moment she ever saw Kelly alive - outside of a college dorm, a party raging on inside, with Kelly pleading for Sam to come run away with her. And, in the present day, Sam feels a lot of guilt about this, because she thinks that if she HAD run away with Kelly that night, then Kelly would still be alive.
And yeah there's a bunch of metaphors with cars and the open road, as it represents freedom and independence and being young and all that good stuff.

This is the first time I've ever heard anything about this musical. I adore your Hadestown animatics, so I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed with this once I saw it in my feed. But I wasn't expecting this amount of pure artistry. You thoroughly conveyed the entire story within five minutes, which is an amazing feat in and of itself. This is beautiful in every sense of the word. The expressions, the designs, the shifting of scenes and settings, the character development...astonishing. Riveting. I couldn't look away. I'm not one to get emotional really, but I couldn't stop the tears from flowing once Sam started driving. The song itself is quite impactful, but it is so amazingly enhanced by your work. This is a masterpiece, and I can't thank you enough for bringing it into the world. Bravo.

It's more of a metaphor, she didn't actually hit her, but she feels like she inadvertently caused the crash by not deciding to go with Kelly.

The death scene was wonderful and made me feel genuinely freaked, which doesn’t happen a lot to me. This was WONDERFULLY done and the metaphors were beautiful

at the time Sam has a boyfriend, but I personally think that she did have feelings for Kelly. but when she does move on from her, she truly falls in love w Adam (at first it's bc he's so supportive and also low-key reminds her of Kelly, but then she grows to love him as his own person too). that's just my hc tho hehe. I can't say Adam was my fav character but I absolutely love what he represents

AH. So this reminded me of my friend dying. I honestly should have payed attention to the warning, but i didn't think it was going to hit so close to home. I will say this is exactly how it feels to lose someone to an accident, and if you are going through that right now, my heart goes out to you. I TRULY care for you right now, and i hope you can understand that you are needed. Theres a void that the person left behind, and you may feel like you aren't worth anything, but people do care about you. Reach out. Seek guidance from people you trust, and talk through this grief.

What an amazing way to introduce so many new people (myself included) into this musical. You capture the torment that the main character is going through perfectly, all the grief, the anger, the non-linear paths... it’s beautiful. Damn near moved to tears. You should be very proud.
This is by far the best animatic on TH-cam that I’ve ever seen, period. The composition is absolutely beautiful, not to mention the art/animation. You’ve come such a long way since your earlier stuff and it’s been so fun watching your art grow!

I think her bargaining stage lasts much longer, and the song ends on depression. I don’t think she reaches acceptance until later in the musical.

I have been obsessed with this musical since WAY BACK when it was still called The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown. This new song really brought the story together, and your animation made it that much more real, like I was experiencing the song again. Thank you
My understanding is that they condensed story lines to make it Mad Ones. For example, in Unauthorized, Sam’s Dad is in the picture, whereas Mad Ones has only her mom.

So, I just cried at this- not even kidding, genuine tears on my face right now. You captured Sam and Kelly so well and just- the emotions were so raw and genuine that I couldn't help but feel them myself. This song kills me whenever I listen to it but seeing a visual representation for it just made it even more emotional. This was so beautiful and heart-wrenching, thank you for animating this.

TBH, this is the dynamic and relationship my sister and I have. I am a lot more reserved and afraid to make those big leaps, but my sister is the one that wants to try and do everything. She's my best friend and my whole world. If I was to lose her, I'm sure I'd be feeling exactly what Sam is feeling in this.
40 seconds in and it literally took my breath away holy shit. "she was" gives me goosebumps.
I've never seen or even heard of this musical but the amount of emotion and storytelling you put into this animatic made me mourn the loss of a character I've never even SEEN before this. Absolutely superb work.

I guess in the middle of quarantine is a good time as any to start processing my grief for something that happened nearly seven years ago. Thank you for the beautiful art

When I first saw this the car scene had me choked up but the last "sitting on the roof of you beat up car" had me break down sobbing and I didnt even know about this musical. Your art is beautiful and I cant watch this without crying! Amazing!!!!

Anyways this was such a beautiful animatic, and was so powerful. Seriously keeps bringing me to tears, I discovered this only yesterday and keep coming back to this. I’m surprised no one else has done an animatic to this musical.

bro i have never heard of this musical but the way this fucking gut punched me the expressions, the design, the movements, the like, cinematography? when she's driving how she's passing the other girl with each passing light, was so creepy and haunting holy shit and then when she sees images of her in her head and how each one is eventually tainted with her death
the raw emotion, the love, the pain, the grief, this isn't just an animatic is the the musical in animated form, there is life in this, those characters are real, i am just. in fucking awe. this is why animation is my favorite artistic medium, this is why everytime i watch a really good animatic i am reminded that souls exist because what else can be touched so deeply by something that moves you, i am just rambling nonsensical shit but man, animation has always just spoke to me.

Wow I didn't know anything about this musical but this song and this animatic really did make me shed a damn tear. It's so creatively done and has so many interesting scenes. I think the scene that stands out to me is when she's driving in the car, and the lights just flicker on past her, it's so cleverly made! Oh man, fantastic job!

I lost my big brother last septmember. He was a successful lawyer and kind but foremost the smartest person I had ever known. Growing up, he was my beacon. The role model to show me that the path to success and contentment will come to those who work hard. Our family wasn't rich, my brother built himself from the ground up and I wanted to be just like him. Then he took his own life...and ever since then things just seemed to fall apart. I feel so lost without him there to light up the way and show me how to just be. This song and video have been a huge comfort to me in the sense that it explains how I feel. I've never seen the musical but I feel so connected to this. I love your art style and the way you added so much physical emotion to the characters. Thank you for this, it may seem silly but on the harder days it helps to listen to this.

So I think, that from 3:39 where Sam sings about Kelly leaving a black hole, and in the video itself, there's flashes of the memories Sam had with her right? And see how the street is pitch black Sam slowly starts removing her hands off of the wheel? Maybe, she's trying to kill herself to join Kelly/thinking about it? I mean, the blank/dazed expression on her face when she says "rhyme" sorta,,, I guess,, hints at it a little more for me personally. But then, she sees Kelly walking down the road and she swerves. Maybe it represents that, in the middle of her wanting to commit suicide to join Kelly, she remembers Kelly herself and perhaps that Kelly wouldn't want her to do that,,,? So Sam swerved, meaning that she takes back her decision before it could go any further/snaps out of it.

I think it's not suicide, i mean good interpretation but here's mine. In the actual musical Sam was just numb of grief and guilt, and not suicidal (as far as I know, might be wrong) so the part where Sam drives a car and sees Kelly and suddenly swerves is a symbol that Sam blames herself for Kelly's death cuz she didnt agree to go that night, that night when Kelly asked her to run. And thus leads to Kelly's death by being hit hy a car driven by a football player, and Sam blaming herself, feels that she was on the driver's seat that killed Kelly.

When my mom was in high school, her best friend died in a car crash at 16. Sam looks like my mom in this. Watching this it breaks my heart because I feel like I could see what she was feeling at that age when her friend passed…
This was so beautiful. My brother, who is a huge musical buff, recommended that I watch this and I am now going to listen to the whole soundtrack. As a novice artist I envy your patience and technical skill in being able to create this, but it is absolutely wonderful.

Honestly I never comment on vids cause I know it would just get lost, but on the odd chance you see this: you are so, so, so talented. I only stumbled on The Mad Ones yesterday and have been binging the soundtrack since, and I found your animatic looking for a lyrics vid, and I've just had it on a loop in my head since yesterday. I just can't get over how alive you've made the characters feel, how human, how emotional! Even simple but forgettable things like lighting, make such a difference and you've done it so well. I WISH i could draw emotions as well as you! You've inspired my to pick up my tablet pen again, so thank you so much for that.

This animatic is brilliant! I love the mad ones and you portrayed the emotion so clearly here. You make it clear that Sam can’t reach Kelly even when she’s still alive in Sam’s imagination. I can’t do the justice to how wonderful this is. You have such a talent and great understanding of these characters.
Definitely checking the musical! I love big crescendo songs, and this hit me so hard! The visuals and the movement of the mouth with the singing is phenomenal!! I specially loved when she starts up the car and she starts driving

So I’ve watched this about 15 times in a row now and i just...this is SO FANTASTIC!!! Like you’re animatics are always good, but this!? This shows so much GROWTH!! The smooth transitions, the imagery, the use of red color and flickering lights, and how you don’t pull any punches, as well as the perfect synchronization with the song. It’s so raw and visceral and portrayed the emotions of the source material really well. Honestly, i think you portrayed the essence of the story better than the full musical did (I’ve heard mixed reviews of the show) and I’m just so impressed and you frankly should feel proud of the work you did.

Yeah, holy shit, I’m just sitting here with tear streaked cheeks. I don’t even know how to phrase how much added sadness you brought to this song. The song itself is heart wrenching but the animatic adds so much. The beats of going between her bloodied corpse and those happy, lovely memories is what really got me. Absolutely beautiful work, as always. You’ve improved so much sense you hadestown animatics and it really shines here.

I watched the performance of this song after your animatic and it made me love this even more!! The fact that you came up with so much for the setting and the shots and everything from a stage that's pretty much bare is insane (nothing wrong with a bare stage of course, I just thought from watching this first that there'd be something else! But nope! It's all you!) I love the driving sequence when the flashing image of her friend the most.
This is like my 5th or 7th time through this, and I’ve only just noticed not ONLY that there are lights in the pictures of houses actually blinking, but that ALL the lights pulsate in time with the drum/heart beat.
GEEZ, the attention to DETAIL. You did not have to go this hard for us.
I always cry, each time I see watch this video. Especially when the blond girl's expression crumbles, as if she is a ghost visiting for one last time, heartbroken at her love's grief. "Grief is love with nowhere to go" and it fits that song so well. I love it. ^_^

I love how this clearly shows the odd representation of someone who passed away. They maintain the image we saw them best in, whilst seeing them at the exact moment when they died..
I am feeling so many emotions holy fuck. I already thought this was one of the best songs in this musical and just generally of all time, and you managed to capture its essence so well with your imagery. Your style is so distinctively beautiful, and I particularly love the moment where Sam is driving and it keeps cutting between that and her memories of Kelly. God, it's a lot, but like, in the best way. So thank you for sharing!

wow, this is so beautiful! I don't know this musical but your art really gets the emotion of what you described in the summary across. The bit where the blonde girl's corpse appears in different positions is super intense. And the frames are already ridiculously clean for an animatic, but from 4:24 on the animation is just so beautiful! I love the lighting and how smooth it is!
