In truth, what makes this, and the other May of '77 Dead shows so friggin' great is Betty Cantor-Jackson. This show is not even in the Dead vault and this, her copy, is the reason we have this insanely good soundboard.

+Philip Williams well, I'm a big deadhead, and went to a lot of shows, but let's be honest here--this song, on this date, is the best they have to offer.
There is a lot of crap out there too.

Jerry songwriting live...hearing a groove in his head and executing it to near perfection with a band that supported his genius better than any band in history. This is so good...Jerry just channeling and becoming the music that came from his soul. Dead at their best....Thanks Jer..

Absolutely. This recording contains the finest example of Bobby's genius, perhaps rivaled only by his rhythm solos in the 8/6/71 "Hard to Handle," 1/2/70 "Mason's Children," and "The Eleven" from Live/Dead. You should check out all of these amazing Bobby moments.

Lots of people cap on Grateful Dead and rightfully so I guess... Most of these people love their classic rock but they just can't or don't "get" The Dead.... Maybe It takes a particular ear or having grown up to it, or as in my case, a specific incident to turn a person on to the magic of their music... One of the 'gratest' things about this band was the way their sound changed over the years... Sometimes the music doesn't even sound like the same band whatsoever... Take this song for example... Listen to this version a couple 'dozin' times and then listen to the same song from Binghamton, 2 May, 1970 and at times I swear it sounds like a band from a different planet... Both versions are the same song by the same band (+/- three band members) but they are both completely different arrangements and both are absolutely stellar!
How did you get into the dead's music?
I was taken in 1983, at age 14, by an older neighbor to a Dead Show, at the time only knowing that GD was a band that had an album: "Skeletons From The Closet"... He kept telling me how much fun it would be... Well it was not at all what I expected and I thought the people there were really weird but I had a good time nevertheless... However, it would be a couple more years until I actually "GOT IT"... I was at another deadhead friend's house and we were taking bong hits when she popped in a tape of 5-9-77 and music never stopped came on first... she then left the room to take a call leaving just me with the band... And from that night on, my life's course would forever be changed... I feel so fortunate to have had the final 10 years of memories to cherish forever... Thank You Jerry Et al...

Sorry but this jam alone does in fact make 5/8/77 more than just a really good show that had great sound quality. Or a show inferior to some of those around it. Peeeeeshaw. This is indescribably good. Weir and Jerry finishing each others' chords on those twin takedowns is crazy. At 7:02 Billy says 'Let's go' and they're really off.
