For that price you can buy a brand new IPad Pro, brand new AirPods Max, a midi controller, and buy dozens of music making apps that have way more flexibility and also great design language. The price is beyond ridiculous.

@FullClippz The best thing to do to not care about what you said at all is to never get into it in the first place. I've produced two demo albums this year on more reasonably priced equipment and I don't feel anything lost for not using OP-1 or any other overpriced widget from TE or anyone else in the process. I still feel spiritually fulfilled like when I first listened to Radiohead Amnesiac 20 years ago with out going financially bankrupt 🌝

@FullClippz Yeah listen I fully get that, I’ve worked with OP-1 back in the day and with some people that absolutely adore it, and there is just no doubt in my mind that it is a fantastic piece of engineering and it can definitely spark some creativity, and to a certain extent that in itself is kinda priceless. My point is that the price seems to be such a gatekeeper for some people that might want to explore the creative endeavors that the OP1 offer (same as you) but just wont be able to due to such a ridiculous and unnecessary price point. At the end of the day its TE’s product and they can price it however they want it, but the fact of the matter is that they are pricing out people just because of brand positioning which imo it’s super unnecessary because the product’s design already makes it feel premium.

And for the price of one pair of '85 Jordans you could buy enough sneakers to last the rest of your life, but that's not what some people want. I don't understand why this is hard to comprehend. It's not about the price or the value of the gear for some people. Also, aint nobody composing using airpods with the latency on those things.

It's just too expensive. In Australia most retailers are already selling OP-1 for $2000 AUD, and some as high as $2200, and this is after the scalping issues that arose when they stopped production on it (Remember the "No one should pay that much for an OP-1" post?).
I really wonder if TE did their market research for other countries because I don't think there's going to be a lot of people willing to drop $3000 AUD on this, when there are far more affordable and capable grooveboxes/all-in-one workstations coming out every couple of months.
I remember when TE had laser-focused 'bedroom production' experience design and marketing: The kind of quirky, fresh tools that were affordable for everyone looking to try their hand at music production. These days it seems they're trying to tighten their profit margins and set boutique synth pricing expectations.

  • @NorthGameStudio

I absolutely love my OP1. I bought it right after it was rereleased with a 'better' screen. I use it so much, that every time I pick up another synth, I think of how to use it like I use my OP1. There is just nothing out there quite like it. I have been lucky that mine has had no issues, except it froze a couple of times, and I couldnt breathe. I've heard mixed reports on the OG OP1, some people have issues with it and the support from TE is not the best. I fear with the aging components and limited stock, fixing an OG1 OP1 will be harder. This new OP1 Field is a pivot for long term support and with new hardware, there is more potential for future firmware improvements. Its tough with the current competitors to justify that price, but I just dont see anyone else in the same bracket as TE. The charm, workflow, sound, and mobility is insane. I know we are not as mobile these days, but I love the minimal look for my small bedroom studio. Great stuff shines, big fan!

My collections of synths, samplers and modular far exceed the cost of the Field. What piece of gear do I still use time and time again? My OP-1. Yes, I pre-ordered the Field. Call me crazy, but 10 years out of that small of gear is worth every penny imo. Sure I don’t travel much, but all I do is sit in front of a computer for work all day. Jamming anywhere but my desk is a win; couch, backyard, camping, the bus, food court - who cares! It’s coming with me. I have yet to find something as capable and portable as my OP-1.

Just sold my OG, and picked up the Field...whiiiiich helps to mitigate the price tag. They went down the list and ticked off basically every wishlist item I had. The original was/is a joy to create on (regardless of whether or not we're in a worldwide pandemic), and real MIDI compatibility is nearly reason enough alone to want to make the jump. I struggle to imagine a real need for an undo button, though? That seems left field. Need to define the scope of what it could affect, how many levels, can you Redo, etc.

I think you could say that about a lot of features. Some people want the OP-1 to be exactly what it is, while others want changes. But each group and everyone between could say that this or that feature breaks it. I’m happy to have multiple tapes, but as the Shiney indicates, for some it is going to far. I think T.E. is especially prone to this hyper specificity. One guy I was arguing with said the OB-4 is better for NOT having an aux out, that forcing you to record sound by just holding a mic up to its speaker preserves its integrity or some nonsense. An undo button, to me, would undoubtedly be useful.

Only when I win the lottery would I ever consider buying a Teenage Engineering product. And even then.... mmm... no. $2,000 for the OP-1 Field? My $400 Dell laptop with Reaper and a tiny little midi controller with keys and pads can do way more than that thing, for a fraction of the price. One of my favorite youtubers, Michael (channel name playpm), is educating everyone on how to make awesome music with the cheapest gear. He is a treasure. People please, don't buy into the hype of so much of this stuff... your laptop can already do everything you want. The only limit is your imagination.

I truly don’t see enough appeal to replace my current OP-1. There are definitely exciting improvements but I can’t see it improving on my actual OP-1 experience as it is now. It seems like a good buy for someone who has been eyeing the OG OP-1 for years, where they can start fresh with the new model. But as an owner and fan of the OG I’m in no hurry to replace it with the field.
Also, I haven’t seen anyone else say this yet so could be just me again, but I don’t think the field is as aesthetically pleasing as the OG. Could be biased but the brighter colours of the OG make it more appealing IMO. Call me shallow but that would definitely feel like an adjustment if I were to get the field!

Yeah. I'm one of the idiots who could probably swing it, but I'm not going to buy it either. For what it does, it's just not enough to justify the price.
For my needs personally, it would need to have SD Card streaming and unlimited sample time to support layers upon layers of vocal takes, and a full mixing & mastering suite onboard. As much as I love T.E. and the form factor, it's just nowhere near the ballpark.

The more I watch, the less I want the new one. I nearly sold my OG a few weeks back so was a bit gutted that I didn't when I saw the e-mail today and realised how many will be offloading theirs, but while several of the improvements and new additions to the machine certainly make this initially a lot more attractive both as a travel instrument and for home use, something with the style doesn't sit right (it is SOOOO ugly!) and I kind of worry that the charm of the old engines may be lost in the "improvements".
also as I'm not really travelling much anymore then the new tape functions and such don't have so much power as it's not that much hassle to move tape tracks when there is a computer to hand.
From what I'm seeing/hearing so far, a lot of what makes the original fun to me is being wiped out and for all those retro and lofi vibes, the OG should still hold a place.
I also have to say I find TE kind of sketchy when they obviously had this in development for quite a while but did a lot to promote the original last year to boost sales of that one just before dropping the new one and making everyone want to spend their money all over again. I get that it's a business, but that was really not a musician-friendly move. If they happen to give some nice updates to the original (such as the new reverb for starters, and cleaning up the noise on the String engine) then maybe that will show some integrity, but I get the feeling they're done with the OG and just did a massive money grab over the last year to play on the hype and fill pockets.
still, ugly new graphics and gross colour scheme aside this still seems a cool piece of gear for those who move around a lot!

We're all not stuck at home. Travel happens everyday in every capacity. I have to do just that. The ppl tht like the OG will like this. I do like it but enough to buy? Idk & that might be typical of current OP owners. Is it's market new OP users? Things it really needed imo... A bigger screen & possibly an undo button (though I do see the logic in the play it again mindset.) BUT at least imho it most importantly needs at least 16 tracks per tape. The biggest weakness imo is 4 tracks. I get its limits help inspire but I've never been inspired because of 4 tracks. Generally it made something inspiring because of its quirkiness but then I had to send tht to another machine or piece of software to sequence it. That is the least fun part of music for me. Laying down 16 tracks in an OP would've been a game changer & not too much to ask for at 2k.

    • @shifteleven
      @shifteleven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@greendayblinkfan182 so I don’t have the field, but the op-1 makes a fine partner with the deluge. The reason it works with the op-1 is that the deluge can accept midi over usb - you just need to give external power to the deluge. I use a rip cord and a usb batter pack to keep it portable. Oh yeah, and you will need an adapter to fit the usb A end into the usb B in of the deluge.
With this you can have the deluge sequence a synth or drum on the op-1 (just one at a time though). From there you can record to op-1 tape or you could go audio out of op-1 to audio in of the deluge and resample into the deluge. And if you set the BPM of the deluge to what’s recorded on the op-1 tape - you can play on top of that or sample from deluge to op-1 or vice versa.
And then once you have the audio going back and forth, you can make a synth from a deluge synth sample, or use the audio from the op-1 as an oscillator source and play that like a synth. Lots to play with in that respect

Okay. I’m a Security/Solutions architect. My job is to architect systems that solve problems for the least expenditure possible. As I write this the average, used MPC One is $725. What does 1275$ get me. Size? Okay, what else? Weight, okay what else? I’m waiting….
And that’s my point. Oh neat you have more tapes. I can fill multiple SD cards. Oh neat, you’ve got tiny little piano keys. I’ve got velocity sensitive pads. Oh neat you have a 2.5” diagonal screen. Mines about 3 times that size.
I could compare the cost of the OP-1 field to an MPC Live II, with an Arturia Keystep Pro, and a backpack to put them in, and still have money left over for MPC expansion packs.
“But I can use the OP-1 field in an Airplane.” GFY, I’ve used my Live II in an airplane too (no, I didn’t pull out the KeyStep Pro). My point is….
There’s not a DAMNED thing here worth 2K, that I can’t get somewhere else for cheaper. And if design/packaging is the response….
I’ll buy a used OP-1. Prices will be dropping on these as people sell to upgrade…

Dawless studio huh....for $2000 akai, roland, and maschine+ for 1/2 that in some cases and all have more features than the "NEW" OP-1 swing and miss gotta say. Seems like a price gouge compared to all of the other 2022 released stand alone groove boxes that have dropped this year so far. Same "chip procurement issues" as every other manufacturer on the market. Smh

100% agree! They went a little overboard on the build quality and not enough refinement of the new features.

P.s. I'm a little more than pissed. I watched a video this morning fromSB22 with the dreadbox guy. You know what he's doing. He's making diy kits this year. You know why? Because he thinks it's fun to create them. Also they are cheaper, more engaging, more educational, more musical because you have to learn to tune them, the philosophy of ownership and pride of craftsmanship. Mainly because it's the cheapest way that he can provide Dreamers an opportunity to play out thier fantasies. Know what else he did? Also bringing back in diy form some of what people have been asking for. And to him it's just Friday. I'm not saying Dreadbox has exactly the right idea but you really want to follow the robot people where we can all have contact less Sex. Or Do you wanna get Viciously Fucked with razor edge organisms by a Greek God opening the Gates of Hell with such Vengeance it's hard to Decipher reality 😕 🤔. Yeah

it's beautiful for sure, just too bloody expensive to travel anywhere with it. For those without one, buy a s/h OG-1 & a Polyend Play.

OP-1 was hype from the beginning and not worth the cost in my opinion. It relied on the unusual flashy design well thought out targeted advertising and the shiny object syndrome of its consumers. Purchasers of it were locked into boasting about it to justify the mistake they made in spending so much on so little. The new release is more of the same. Now the company is just resting on their laurels preying upon there fanbase like all companies that rerelease old ideas. What a joke. I feel sorry for the dedicated loyal users of this product and disgusted at the greed of Teenage Engineering.

Don't think I'll replace. The OP-1 was never an all-in-one solution (and even with more tracks, isn't) and sure, they did a few nice things with the new model; but the price tage is too hefty. I scored my original for $750 new on sale, and to think of paying $1300 more for a portable device like that, nice as it is...no. It functions in my world as a sketchpad when I feel blocked, so it isn't worth it to me. Good luck to them, I'm sure they'll find a market.

Though I believe they have the right to cash in - still, many of these so called update/upgrades are solely software based and some should be shared with current OP1 owners. Instead, they just put it to EoL and plod along. Shit company.

Here it comes: the Whines and Rants about the price. Stop!
If TE could make a profit at $999 I’m sure that’s what they would have priced it at.
If you can’t afford it, just say so. No need to whine about how “it doesn’t fit my needs” when the real truth is “it costs more than I can afford”, or “I hate that I bought an OP-1 and it’s now significantly bettered”. 100X better according to TE.

“If TE could make a profit at $999 I’m sure that’s what they would have priced it at.”
What planet have you been on? They sell their plastic knob accessory kit for $75. A standard 3.5 mm cable is $15. The mixer is more than double it’s closest competitor, the very capable 1010 Bluebox. The OP1 now is creeping up towards double the launch price (which was already high), and this model is nearly 2.5 times it, in only ten years. They always drastically overcharge.
Like, at what point ISN’T it overpriced? Like, how much would you say is too much to ask for?
