  • Lai Ah Hong started his Christmas Island journey sleeping on a wooden bed frame, with no mattress, in a three-square-metre army barracks style accommodation. This is Lai's Christmas Story.

Glad to come across this video. My Father, his brothers/sisters and Grandfather lived in CI. Grandfather was the 'Ho' Family, came over as a laborer/slave with a tattoo or brand on his arm with a 3 digit number. They all left around 1965 to 1970's. We are taking our father back within the next 12 months, he hasn't been back since. I believe a lot has changed from what he has heard from old/passed friends. The family use to look after a section of the train tracks near a camp site. Use to tell me stories, take the train to go watch Movies and go Hiking, Fishing, Hunting. Sounds like a good time!

Thankyou Mr. Lai. I lived there in 1969/1971. My first introduction to Asia. A life changing experience! Your conditions were shameful. Appalling to think decent people lived like that in the20th century. And in an Australian territory!!

I am touched by the community spirit of those people of Christmas Island. I have a friend who used to worked there in the late 70s. By watching all the videos on CI stories, i really felt it will be excellent i can helped contribute to their economy. To help them in diversifying their economy so that the community will continue to sustain itself for generations to come. It will be a pity if the mine closes and they are unable to continue their livelihoods. I am really touched by their mutual respect and communal spirit which i would say getting extinct elsewhere. Where we are from, people are more interested in accumulate more wealth and power but neglected to do a simple thing in life. "Stop and smell the roses". We constantly trying to be more successful, accumulate more wealth, live in a bigger mansion, drive a bigger car or in short outdo others. I guess the series of videos from the CI stories really open up my eyes and heart. Thank you very much for the videos and God Bless all the Christmas Islanders.

In all the CI Stories I've watched so far the common word used in the intro has been "Community" - and it is a word that pops in my mind about CI too. I hope the future of the continuing community after Phosphate is as good as it has been for the past community. Looking forward to seeing what diversification will happen. Thanks for sharing your story Mr Hong - it was touching.

Thank you Lai Ah Hong. Your proclamation is painfully true. When your people re-opened the Mine, it was a remarkable achievement. Every respect Sir to you; It was my great privilege to be a marine pilot again through your endeavor. I wish you well with every blessing in the Lord God.

Christmas Island used to be part of Singapore until it was transferred to Australia by the British government in1958. I am Singaporean, I’ve never been to Christmas Island, but I feel close to it, as the population structure and culture resembles Singapore, I will visit Christmas Island one day.

An really old friend of mine from Klang, Selangor, used to work at Christmas Island back in the '75. Shortly after a number of years there. He married the local and moved to Perth. We met once in 78 when I was backed to Msia from Japan for a brief stay. Wondering how and where he is now? Miss you, my friend. Hopefully he read this message.

You talk about about how you became part of a union, a collective of brothers and sisters to fight for the rights to benefit the many and not the few. Human rights, community rights, labour rights yet you have forgotten the values and the support of the island community that have allowed you to rise through the ranks to become Managing Director. You have betrayed the trust of the islanders for your own financial gain and you now become a hypocrite by exploiting the very same workers who supported you by reforming labour costs and bring in FIFO that is having a detrimental economic effect on the island and it's community. You should be ashamed of your behaviour and god willing you will see the error of your ways and return the love back to the community that once loved you.
