@@bunnyben5607 Russia wasn't even that far ahead, their culture per turn was barely above the player's at the start of this. Really I find that if you as the player have already caught up in culture or science per turn (whichever you are prioritizing) by the Renaissance, you will win the game in the end, even on Deity. So this player was already in a perfectly fine situation and was likely to win a tourism victory just by stopping the war and switching to settler/wonder/theater square production (plus economic buildings and trade routes to eventually buy great works). But it's still fun to watch Potato explain his thought process behind how he would switch off of a war focus to a culture focus.
I did the math. According to Civilization Wiki there are 7 levels of city satisfaction: Revolt (0.6 multiplier to non-food yields), Unrest (0.7), Unhappy (0.8), Displeased (0.9), Content (1), Happy (1.1) and Ecstatic (1.2). The transition from Revolt to Unrest will give you a 0.7 / 0.6 ≈ 1.166 multiplier to your current yields in the city. If we do this calculation to all of the transitions we get: Revolt to Unrest: 1.166 Unrest to Unhappy: 1.143 Unhappy to Displeased: 1.125 Displeased to Content: 1.111 Content to Happy: 1.1 Happy to Ecstatic: 1.091 The multipliers decrease slightly with each level. This could mean that, in general, it's more worth it to invest into amenities in cities with low satisfaction than in cities with high satisfaction.
@1:25:00 Lumber mills next to seaside resorts work because 1) woods add appeal to adjacent tiles, and 2) lumber mills do not detract from appeal (like mines and quarries do)
tiny comment here about the note you gave on making a builder without serfdom plugged in - the builder was actually gonna be completed *after* his next chance to change policies so it's entirely possible he was planning for it. I do this all the time, i try to time the beginning of my Builder production to end just after i get a chance to plug serfdom in
I thought the same thing, not having serfdom plugged in when it was going to be slotted back in before it completed isn't a demerit. I also play with a policy change reminder mod though so I don't accidentally pass through without changing it over when need be
My advice to the submitter: play more deity games till the end instead of rerolling. The AI deity bonuses are front loaded, making them jump out to an inevitable huge lead in science, culture, and cities as seen on the scoreboard. The great advantage you have is that the AI is dumb as hell most of the time. Place districts with high adjacency and make smart moves towards your win condition and you will almost always come out on top in the late game. Oh, and always build Kilwa. Good luck. Btw, I think playing on faster game speeds is really useful while you're still learning the game because you get much faster cycles of learning about what works and what doesn't.
Yesterday, in the night (Turin, Italy meridian 🤣) I was watching this exact same video, I've watched 6 minutes then leaved because it's like long video on X2 speed (yeah x2 potato video, wild experience 🤣🤣🤣), now in searching for continuing vision but I can't find out until now, it was reposted.. Why potato, why?🤣🤣🤣
Really love when you go into the mechanics of how things work. It´s improved my game by a lot over the last year or so, since I started regularly watching. Would be very excited for some "master class" style videos on various mechanics.
@32 min in, so don't know if the no third district for Rouen changed, but I would plan a waterpark as Rouen's third district. Adjacent to the harbor it looks to hit every northern city if I'm counting tiles correctly. Anyone else like that idea?
"Great Admirals are bad" Hey, there's at least one that allows you to get a free Lighthouse and Shipyard. That's gotta count for something, right? Still, been playing a lot better thanks to the tater. Thanks for the vids.
Honestly they're basically free pickings since the AI are horrible at actually developing harbor districts, which unintentionally makes up for their generally mediocre retire effects. When no one else competes you tend to get them so cheap and semi frequently that it doesn't really feel bad that their effects are modest boosts.
I hate how they cant keep up with ships past the classical era, its so dumb. The best one gives you a free battleship or ironclad atleast, then you can use another to turn those into an armada but the rest..
Not really sure how this file qualifies as a disaster file. Get the sense the submitter was more looking for ego boost praise than needing help. Still fun to watch Potato play and narrate. Love the informative content, even if I've heard you say it all 100s of times.
AI cheat because they're too dumb to win otherwise. I'd say the cheats only get particularly noticeable past Emperor, so I'd recommend that as the minimum setting for a vague semblance of challenge. Also I'd recommend going for other victory types, especially cultural (easily the most nuanced type late game), since science victories are super easy due to tech protecting you from threats.
Would it be alright to send a save to explain how I'm getting power? I just reached 500 hours in the game with a few deity wins and came across something I can't figure out. I might be brain farting or something, but having it cleared up would help so much. I was exploring online game speed for the first time when I neared the end and saw that one of my conquered cities had over 40 usable power. I understand there are multiple ways to gain power from things like improvements, city-states, governments, etc. But the only way I could justify that much power was to add every single one of those power bonuses plus every single coal plant in range. And there aren't any power improvements in the city. Now, after adding it all up I came just 2 power short of the total. That should be good enough to explain the massive power output, but the problem is why isn't every other city getting more power using that same method? And the coal plants shouldn't even be giving usable power like that in the first place right? It feels like there's some power priority going on that I'm just not understanding. There's also other cities with over 20 power that don't have a dam or any improvements (save one city in entire empire with just one power improvement).
Not really into playing right now because I can’t sit down and play for long stretches. And it’s not enjoyable if I can only play 45 minutes at a time. Sincerely, 1000+ of hours Diety player
Well half the decision I would have made too, but it wouldve taken me like 3-5times longer xD And for the other half, I learned a lot! ty potato (a german potato speaking :P) I know usually we are the Krauts but here in germany the "germans" are also called german potatos :D
Adding onto the amenities convo you want to be neutral or positive because the enemy may have +10%-+20% which will mean while you are gaining less turns per turn they are benefitting so you can even say it's compounded to even double what was stated
Coal power plant gives a production bonus based on the adjacency of the Industrial Zone Oil Power plant gives a flat +3 no matter the adjacency I don't find the Nuclear Power plant particularly efficient to make, it gives a small science bonus +3 if I recall - comes too late imho and there are more fun uses of Uranium xD
THis disaster save is better than most of my normal games
That *right there* is why I like Alex’s videos 👉
There's one subtle detail: He let Russia get too far ahead. That practically guaranteed he wasn't gonna get the tourism victory without optimal play.

It also depends on what the base yields are in that city. If the base yields are equal, however, yes, that is correct.

A naturally themed archeological museum?!? Magical. In all my games that’s happened a few times maybe.
