This song has very poetic lyrics, so as for the meaning it is of course very open to interpretation. When Paul Simon originally wrote this song in the 60s, he had noticed that people seemed to be growing more and more isolated, choosing instead to bow to their “neon god they made”. I always thought he was referring to the television, where in today’s world that line could refer to people being addicted to their mobile phones (and ironically, “people talking without speaking”). So, you could say the original song by Paul Simon was a warning of an isolated future, while the Disturbed version is screaming at us for allowing this future to come to pass.
The Sound of Silence was orginally recorded by Simon and Garfunkle way back in the late 1960s . The band Disturbed actually got permission from Paul Simon ( one of the orginal writers) to cover the song . David Draiman was trained in classical vocals for many years before moving to rock, he is concidered one of the best vocalists in hard rock music.
I would agree 💯% with that and I’d add that Mr. Draiman is probably the best vocalist in MUSIC , no matter what venue he has chosen or been labeled into.😊 Him and Miles Kennedy are just muckin afazin! 😇
The song originally was about how people shared TV and stopped talking to each other. It was about main stream media lying to us, and we as people never discussing it.

My interpretation in present day has changed a bit- We have a singular man that is being moved with thoughts and a calling and expresses this to darkness who is always there . He is a alone, embarking to stir the masses. He cries out his message , his warning. but no one is listening. And their continued silence is spreading like a cancer. So they bow their heads to the Neon gods we made,(ohones , social media) and never dare disturb the sound of silence. Paul was warning us. From the first quiet, intimate verse that seduces you, through one false crescendo after another the song builds in power to its ultimate climax. This is what you wish you could get from sex or religion.
