    If you want to check out Wildlands League (also on the standard social media): wildlandsleague.org/
    Canoeing through ice is not a good idea. Not just the danger but it will damage a canoe and paddles. Cracked our gel coat and paddles need to be sanded and refinished, despite trying to be careful.

      One of the old books on canoeing I've been reading this winter mentions a special kind of tool that they often used for early start/late season trips with ice. I'll have to look it up however I think it was some sort of logging hook. In their case they were using it to pull themselves across ice. Nice video, good to see another one!

      Some of my favourite memories include breaking ice on a canoe excursion or paddling through a fierce snow squall...
      Weather can throw surprises at any time... I once dug some peoples truck out of a snowbank with my canoe paddle and saved them a lot of grief after a late spring flurry in the foothills at our favourite lake. The weird and wonderfully unexpected events often make the fondest memories...🤗

      That's a pain about the damage to the gel coat. I guess just cosmetic but hard to fix.

    You guys look so happy together. I always smile watching you mess around having fun like kids, best way to be.
    I’ve been looking for chaga in my area but not sure enough to harvest. Please ask Erin to do another episode on identifying and harvesting chaga, I’m in the west of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      🙂🙂 You guys have many birch there? In our region of Canada (northern Ontario) there are a ton so the odds are much better. Elsewhere, I've heard numbers like one in a thousand birches

    One of your better videos. You should do more like this one. Lots of good things to say about your camp out:
    1) beautiful spot, but then again where you guys live, it's hard not to find those.
    2) perfect time of the year to witness the land start to wake up after a long winter.
    3) nice to see a young couple in love enjoying themselves so much.
    4) Erin looks nice in glasses, so many people not so much.
    5) so glad to see you're not vegans! 😏
    6) Jon's got wood...
    7)Jon filleting that fish on the shore made me think how many times that exact scenario has played out over thousands of years in that area, first by first nations people then us. It shows the deep history of the land and it's people.
    8) if my memory of the geology of the area is correct, that red rock you were standing nearby is approx. 2 billion years old and those very black rocks you were throwing in your game are 3+ billion years old.
    9)that birch tree saying:' oh thanks Erin, I've been waiting decades for someone to come along and take that chaga wart off me! Feels better already!
    10) the spirit of Groot may haunt you guys...
    Really looking forward to you guys out on the land this year. Stay safe and have fun!

    Thanks so much for these amazingly well done videos...
    I was planning a day trip to an island off the coast to video the spring edibles that are coming up all over right now...
    After seeing you two again out early in the year I am even more enthused about getting on the water...
    It's supposed to be 21 degrees, no clouds and a very slight breeze... We are a bit spoiled on Vancouver Island but I grew up canoeing in Ontario so your trips remind me of many places I enjoyed back there... Except for the mosquitoes of course, and the shorter warm season...
    Stay safe and keep up the inspiring video stories...

    The cinematography was superb as always, the 'cuddle scene' and the drone shot over camp were inspired. This was a beautiful little film to match the epic landscape.

    Hallelujah you're back and catching fish!! I live vicariously through you two so it's been tough all winter. I did a small winter project inspired by you two and your proclivity for losing nets, I filled my net handle with foam and now it floats. I did notice the handoff of the net was akin to an Olympic relay team passing the baton. Love you guys and love your videos.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL! Love the baton analogy...so true. The handle on this one is solid so I can't fill it but I've been looking for the right floatation piece for it. Doesn't need much to make it buoyant either, so it might just be a keychain float. Thanks Jay!!

    As some other oldsters have said, I too so appreciate the vicarious adventures afforded me through your vids. I still get out, but not as far nor fast nor in quite so cold conditions. I love the laker fishing early in spring that you enjoy but I am insanely jealous of the big coaster brookies you get. It is a sad fact that the lunch he puked up is an invasive round goby. They have heavily impacted the eco system in northern Lake Michigan where I live. One up side to them is surprisingly that being a number one food source for our lakers now, they have improved the flavor of our trout. Seems strange but it's true: when another invasive from years back where the number one source-alewives-they tasted kind of nasty. It relates to what the two bait fish eat. Think corn fed beef... I thought you did a better job on the Viking funeral than the History channel did on their series!

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a bunch James!! You would know better than I, but are you certain it's a goby and not another trout favourite, the sculpin? I didn't think the goby had affected Superior much yet. But that's only my impression

      @@LostLakes That's why I was surprised. I'm not 100% sure but you may be right. coloration and the really prominent frog like eyes look suspiciously goby-esque to me. I don't see the black spot on the rear of the taller part of the dorsal that is often present. I have caught a few that had no black spot among schools of them-not on purpose but while targeting other species. Gobys are well established along the south shore of Superior and specimens have been collected in the Thunder Bay area on the North Shore. The number one certainty in identification is the pelvic fin(s). Sculpins have two on the belly (below their upper pectorals) and gobys have one single suction cup like fin in the same place. Let me know if you come across any in your father adventures, eh?
