The 1971 Chevy Nova in the 2007 movie "Death Proof" is a matte black car that is the weapon of choice for a deranged stuntman who stalks women and kills them with his "death-proof" Nova. The car was adorned with a duck ornament on the hood, which was used on the front of Rubber Duck's Mack truck in the 1978 film Convoy. The car's matte black finish with the white skull and crossed lightning bolts on the hood make it one of the most recognizable cars seen on the silver screen.

$35 is cheap now, Revell's flat box reissues are about $60 cdn. Stupid expensive, there's always someone with one sitting in their basement doing nothing.
I hear ya! I got back into modelling (WWII tanks and such) a few years ago and good quality kits (Tamiya for one) are not cheap! But they're a far cry from what we used to build 40 years ago.😁

Gotta love museums who state their display car is ‘the actual’ screen car and ignore how there were actually several used. Some visitors probably still think that car was extensively restored following the wreck.

Thanks! This was well worth the wait. The first of the 3 or maybe even 4 iconic Death Proof cars. Funny thing is, I didn't remember seeing the rubber ducky in Convoy (I guess I was too much focused on Ali McGraw 😉), but always thought the hood ornament in Death Proof was a nod to Convoy.
The Nova was the perfect model for this first part of the movie. It is not one of the really good looking muscle cars, rather unimpressive from the outside and just because of that the perfect mean machine.

All the Death Proof muscle cars are indeed on my to do list, when eventually getting around to covering other cars in movies I've already touched on once, but my list is so long at this point that it may be years out before I get back to it.
This is one of the few channels i keep regular checks on. I wait with baited breath for the next vid. Keep it up, don't stop, its a real treat to see the sub numbers increasing. Right up my alley.

I have met Buddy Joe Hooker and the car he has from the movie. I sat in it. It was on his son's 16th birthday at Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake during the weekly car show. The only change from the movie was the addition of a useful passenger seat. It had an aluminum headed 383 stroker. Tarrantino told me he found the original mold from Convoy to make the duck hood ornament in a Hollywood prop warehouse.

Awesome job on this video! 👏 So many other car movie references throughout the film. When the 1/18 diecast was announced, I definitely ordered it. But it was closer to 100 bucks back then. The Revell kits are perfect bases to to replicas of this car too. Saw one at a model kit show. Guy really went full Death Proof in the details..especially with Rose McGowans scene.. The license plate referce was first thing I noticed when I saw this movie in theaters.. then the rubber duck..and then mind blown for rest of the film.
The Rubber Duck hood ornament in Convoy is only on screen for a few seconds, it's at the end after Duck kicks her out of the truck and he's charging the barricade Dirty Lyle (Ernest Borgnine) has with the 40mm self propelled Duster air defense gun in the middle of the road he fires the M60 machinegun from (rigged up for the movie, Dusters didn't have M60's on coaxial mounts on them).
It's been at least 6 or 7 years but the last time I checked the original maker of the Rubber Duck hood ornament for the movie still made them for sale to the public, as I recall they were in demand so he started making and selling them with his son who eventually took it over, although once again that was some time back when I read the article and saw their website so maybe they aren't doing it anymore and only others are, I think back then they were the only place you could get one from.
If I remember correctly the one in Convoy had a Mohawk that was some kind of fake, or maybe real, hair.
Actually, it is on the truck from the beginning, it's just not zoomed into until later on in the movie. If you watch the blu-ray version it is more apparent in 1080p resolution 😉

I built the model several years ago after seeing the movie. I used the two in one Revell kit and made my own hood decal. Have the movie somewhere and paused it to get the detail pictures. You just have to build the interior to be correct otherwise it's pretty well a match.

@@CarStarz42 yeah one of the Chargers is listed on eBay, and two week's ago I have seen à video on Instagram, and on monday the same guy did a vidéo of one of the Challengers
for those playing the game GTA V they had a car called the Vamos based on that gen of the Nova and one of the livery options for it was a similar skull and lightning bolts on the hood and you could fit the car with a roll cage with a similar dead man seat as the one in the movie. sadly it was removed from the in game websites to buy it so unless you already have it the only way to get it is if it shows up as a prize ride at the casino or car meet and or if it shows up at the in game car dealerships for a week.
That's nonsense. I heard that Rockstar were removing multiple cars from GTA online. what p***** me off is that they can't add these vehicles to the story mode gameplay seriously. I don't play online. And I would like to buy these vehicles in story mode. I don't know why they can't do it because they did it. On the Xbox, 360 and PS3 rendition of the game.

The diecast model has a big block that might upset the purists. It would be fun to build making scratch built parts for the plastic kits.

the usual nova kit is actually a pretty detailed kit for any use. the Corvette rally rims would probably have to come from the 1969 Motion Performance Camaro kit.

That's a cool looking Nova. I assume Tarantino probably has some muscle cars? . Kurt Russell's certainly been in movies a long time , I can remember my mother taking me to see "The barefoot executive " when I was a little kid, it seems like about 150 years ago.
Axel Foley used a worn out Chevy Nova in Beverly Hills Cop, 1984 🎬. I think in the 1987 sequel he rides around CA in a Pontiac GTO convertible or cutlass supreme.

There was a guy here in the Vancouver Washington area that supposedly has one of the movie cars and he had paperwork and autographs to back it up. They took 3 wrecked novas used for the movie and built one good one. It had full plexiglass cage, full movie correct interior, had camera mounts still attached and he even had the pictures on the visor. I can't remember his name but i do know he passed away a few years ago. I have pictures of the car somewhere. He had brought it to the halloweentown car show in st Helen's about a decade ago.

I get that pretty much any 68-72 Nova could have been used for the movie, but if they paid that much attention to the plate numbers, then they would have paid attention to the year on the plates as well. The movie car has 1970 Texas plates, which fall under Texas' Year of Manufacture rule for registration. So for the car to have 1970 plates, the VIN would have had to have been a 1970 VIN. You can't use 1969, 1971, or 1972 plates on 1970 car even though the 69, 70, and 71 plates for Texas are all black letters on a white background.

Number 11- The Nova shown in your thumbnail is actually a 1969. The side marker lights for 68-69 are smaller (like your thumbnail Nova) than the 70-72 (like shown throughout your video). The front hood lip trim for 68 would say "Chevy II" where the 69-72 looks like what's in the thumbnail. Thus, thumbnail car is a 1969.

I didn't remember the movie....until I saw the Challenger with the girl on the hood. I remember they installed window frames on the door windows. So the girl could be tied off to the window frames to do that stunt.

I've been in a 80 mph rollover crash and have to give big props to the stunt driver for doing it by choice.
