About 5 yrs ago i went on a binge watch and checked out all of yours video. Huge fan of your work but i keep waiting for more retrospective reviews. I hope you make that into a constant series.
I’m an older Brit and as I’ve commented to Oliver previously if the BBC ever bring back the movie review programme that aired from 72 to 98 (called Film 72 etc) presented by the late great Barry Norman they could not do better than to employ Oliver to present it 👍
Im with you there. When I discovered Oliver's channel I binged it for a whole week. But then I ran out of videos and now we only seldom get new retrospectives.
@@dirtycash36 In all honestly I was barely involved in them, I pop up briefly in "In Search Darkness II and In Search of Tomorrow" to tell you the plot of a film. I was told by someone on the production that the director of these "In Search of" docs didn't like "TH-camrs" and was jealous of our skills to edit, write and provide voice over so I was only used as an obligation to the producer. I tried to watch In Search of Darkness III but found it pretty much unwatchable. A fair and balanced review that hits all the right points! Thank you for discussing the color tweaks done over the years. I'm not good at recognizing AI sharpening, but I do sometimes notice color changes in home releases. I think color is a big part of a film's identity, perhaps more so than it's graininess. I prefer the old 35mm blue colors during those dark scenes. That's how I remember these older movies. In spite of that, I bought the 4K and thought it looked amazing. I also got to see this 4K release in theaters this past summer on the big screen! It was a great experience.
And I just love the look of the 35mm version. I wish there was a release of these classics more in that steely blue dark look. It fits the mood so well imo.
F--- THAT GREEN AND TEAL DOGSHIT. There was nothing wrong with the way they originally looked. The Terminator was more or less a low budget exploitation film. Now with this new color scheme it looks like a f---in' Wojchowski film. I want the original cold, steel blue look of the original. Not the Matrix.
It’s out there. Check out Lord of the ring 35 mm as well. Someone on TH-cam remastered them but kept the filmic look rather than the “modern” look of the official versions.
I have the 4K version on Apple TV 4K. I am completely impressed! Stayed very close to the original version but was cleaned up. There was a version of this on the TH-cam channel, “Movies and Popcorn” that made it over saturated with shiny faces and too much green. This version kept the grittiness of the original. I’ve waited over a decade for this and it has not disappointed me. Christmas came early!❤️
40 years. This Terminator has come a long way with all the different editions. Just... Wow! The 4K quality is so darn sharp, clean and rich in picture.
The retrospective reviews are some of the best reviews of movies available to see. longer more in depth reviews feel best for a good watch with Oliver but will always have fun even with shorter content time to time.
I’m on the fence about getting a 4K player, and this is why. Every time you turn around there’s a new version of the film that promises that “this is the definitive version!” I’m not a technical guy, I just like to watch great movies without having to buy new versions every few years. Honestly, I like extras the best of all!
One thing I noticed from the original version was the terminator 45 gun sounding original like the 44 magnum in Dirty Harry since then they changed the sound of the gun firing
I am so looking forward to my copy arriving. Listening to the original audio and seeing it with an amazing 4K transfer is brilliant! This is one of my favourite films of all time and is the best Terminator AND Cameron film!
My understanding for the 'teal and orange' look was originally to increase the contrast of a movie in an otherwise limited range. But once we have HDR, that makes the tonemapping for increasing the contrast moot.
Cameron doesn't seem to care for any of that. What has happened to the technical perfectionist he once was? Aliens doesn't even have an extended color space.
My favorite scene in the movie still when Resse looks into the camera and says "That's All He Does!" and that true sense of terror on Sarah's face. Great acting from Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton.
Same as when he’s covering for the writers/lampshading the concept: “Something about the energy surrounding a living being, nothing dead will go. I didn’t build the fuckin’ thing?!” And his lack of response to why he didn’t bring any “ray guns”.

People really need to stop with hating on updated 4K's. I am NOT hating on OG look, grain and what not...but people need to understand that companies and directors want to bring the best optimal pic and sound. I will admit I do not like when the nerfed the gun sounds few additions back, but I appreciate what they are trying to do. Watch your old VHS, Laser, DVD's if you don't like this one. I myself LOVE my DVD of T2 Ultimate Edition! It has awesome BTS!
@@morten1 Exactly! The texture of the film adds to the atmos. The grain add to that gritty, grimy vibe of the film. Take 28 Days Later for example: it was shot in MiniDV for that gritty texture, but the ending was shot in 35mm to give it a sharper, more clean image to suit the feeling of the scene.
06:39 The overall blue tint was something that was added at the printing stage, so it's not on the negative (same deal as T2 - in fact, old trailers do show neutral-looking images in scenes we all know are supposed to be blue-ish, like Sarah trying to escape the asylum). It was likely added to make the movie feel a tad more stylish and less cheap, though with optical printing you never get the same result twice and one has to wonder what the actual amount of blue was supposed to be (the only way would be to have access to the original answer print - i.e. the print that was approved by the director\dp\producer - or an early-on, first generation copy). These scans in particular show very high densities and and emphasize the magenta that was typical with old Kodak Eastman stock, to the point that certain elements look purple, making them a not-so-great reference.
Loved your videos since 2014, Oliver! You’re the only content creator who shares my exact level of enthusiasm and attention to detail on how Hollywood treats these legacy releases.
Once again, a brilliant review Ollie! I love how you went into great detail with the previous releases/masters with this one and I hope you continue with this for future reviews. Ghostbusters (1984) is another film that springs to mind that has had several different remasters across the formats.
Thanks for the review, interesting. The best Terminator version I saw and owned is - was by far the old overused VHS tape I had in the 90s. The format and used tape blurred the dated vfx like the eye scene in the motel, and plus this one had the original sound and in mono! With the big old colt shot sounds haha! And a great french adaptation. Yes i'm french. One of very favorite movies ever by the way.
Excellent vid Oliver, i was amazed how good they got this to look and sound,i thought the 4ks of Aliens and The Abyss where very good but this is definitely the best remaster...i did a small review myself, newly subscribed to your channel 😊
I was pretty blown away by the new Atmos mix. Despite the replacement sound effects which don't bother me too much, the music, the surround and everything that comes with it is such an engaging experience. You feel transported to that world.
I managed to preorder the steelbook 4K disc on a misprice for £20 and thankfully the site I bought it off honoured it. It was only until watching your video I realised the original theatrical mix is in here and that for me alone makes it worth the price of this. The noise of the gunfire was always terrible since the DVD but always liked the video upgrades on every version and I have once gone out my way to make my own remux of latest BD version with mono audio with the better gunshots. Yes I’m that odd with this film, it’s my favourite film of all time. This is a great disc besides all that, as you say it would have been nice to have additional video but the previous docs have been great.
Just watching this and it’s one of the most impressive 4ks I have seen thus far. It’s cleaned up but with grain still there. It’s pretty perfect to my eyes but I’m no expert. It’s what I want from a remaster in 4K.
I have it on VHS which I got in the 90s and I've also picked up the DVD and Blu-ray over the years too, so may as well get this. I think it looks and sounds great from the parts I've seen.
At the end, when Reese says "He'll tear her f***ing heart out!" it sounds like the audio has been garbled lol. Now it sounds like "He'll come for dinner!"
Yeah, I finished watching this on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. It looks sharper, really good on my 4K Television, and the sound quality is quite better than the previous releases. I still kept my DVD version it had more bonus features.
I actually was unsure, but I think I'm going to grab it thanks to your review. I did have some reservations when I noticed the teal (the whole reason I skipped the bluray as I remembered a cool blue for the night / dark scenes from my nostalgia glasses and always thought that it helped set a proper tone.) It seems these days that nobody trusts the original grading and always either lean heavily into orange and/or teal. Even if you think the original minorly flawed, you'll remember it for its uniqueness. I'm worried everything is going to get washed out and homogenized in this rush to "modernize for contemporary audiences."
I watched the re release in cinemas a couple of months back (Cineworld) It had a James Cameron intro before the film. A short retrospective, In more words than one he mentioned how looking back it was too cheesy at times. Me and someone across the aisle had a miffed race when he said that, The viewing with Dolby Atmos was fantastic though. Its one of my cinema highlights of this year. To see this film on the big screen helped me relate to when my mum and aunt saw it back in 1984 and they were blown away.
Keep bringing in those reviews and thank you for this. If you have the original special edition d.v.d containing ALL the bonus features, hold on to that one.
Only the international releases of the special edition DVD omitted the mono track, which was a standard MGM practice so they could fit a bunch of dub tracks on the discs; it could still be found on the region 1 and region 3 releases, so it wasn't until blu-ray it was truly gone across the board.
I love this film, with the exception of Laserdisc, I’ve owned it on every format. I’m gutted now with this upscale, I thought we were getting a true 4K. The previous blu ray was absolutely stunning. Why has he upscale this if there is a true 4K master to be utilised? This film absolutely deserves the maximum resolution. The mono track and atmos sound brilliant, why can’t we have a full new 4K
Watching it right now and its theres so much detail. Nothing like T2. I set my to the warmest settings. Looks great to me. Even on my old 7.1 surround sound is active.
I feel that sound was every bit as important as image with a movie like The Terminator. This release was excellent in both. Wasn't a fan of the teal palette as it made it looked dated so this was a joy to watch with the original mono.
Just buy the 2012 Blu-Ray. Not ideal, but it's perfectly watchable and a LOT cheaper. The UHD is just the same master used in that Blu-Ray upscaled with AI. The only benefit of the UHD is the original mono mix is included
Hopefully, we can get a 4K release of Clint Eastwood's *"DIRTY HARRY"* films with their original theatrical sound mix (Mono for the first four films & Dolby Stereo for the last film) added back in.
I don't need my TV broadcast/DVD memories of The terminator to be upscaled and restored to enjoy this version, a 4k scan will always appear sharper due to the resolution. The Mono audio track should play nicely with the 4k film. Also, the steelbook includes the Blu-ray in the UK. Amazing review, thank you!
I'm sure you dancing skills did impress the ladies, they were just worried about their local Terminators lol. You know I don't think I have seen the 35mm version now that you mention it, always the TV or VHS version, I will have to track this 35mm version down, thanks for mentioning it and all the reviews you do.
Or T2 in 4K… i bought that one on ebay, brand new, and while it was on the way watched some reviews… sold it without opening the wrap, just as it came… that movie deserves better. When Predator 4K came out, i was so happy to upgrade from the ultimate hunter buray edition 😊
I enjoyed watching The Terminator in 4K for the first time, I pre-ordered the steelbook edition which I'm glad I did since it sold out quite quickly. Bonus it also comes with a standard blu-ray copy of the film, have yet to try it but I assume it has more special features than the what's included on the 4K disc. Gonna be picking up The Abyss at some point but I'm unsure about Cameron's other 4K releases.
I never noticed the scenes Oliver was on about with the wires and crew. Clearly I'm not that observant haha I think I'll stick with my blu ray. There's no extras and the quality difference is minimal. If it goes on sale I might convince myself though
Watching this it makes you realise how much of a horror film the original Terminator was, unfortunately I don't think Cameron is capable of producing anything like this currently. Im amazed he hasn't removed all the guns digitally judging by his recent comments.
Nice one. Cheers. I am still a huge fan of The Terminator. Thank you for your Blu-Ray review. This was my go-to film for a long time. A night out with my mates, then come home, trough a Ruby, then pop on the film while downing a few tins to round off the nights. Had I not married my Sarah Connor look-alike girlfriend, I would probably still be doing the same today. Sadly, I am not at all interested in the the sequels. I did try T2. No thanks. A precocious child and his pet robot? Didn't Lost in Space do this already! Had Kyle survived, I imagine he would be living the dream of raising his own family with the girl of his dreams, as am I.
now the only thing we need are the punchy soundeffects into dolby atmos and we will have a near perfect edition? i suppose the fact they at least added the mono is a win. xD
I don't even liked the Blu-ray, to me it looked very teal, and this 4K looks even more teal. The new HDR is a disaster, it's worse than the SDR of the first Blu-ray in terms of highlights, especially in flames and explosions. To me this 4K is not worth it. Also, I don't wanna support the use of AI on the restoration of live action footage, if I wanted live action films to be remade into animated CGI films, I would probably watch a Disney movie instead, at least they aren't made by an AI... yet.😂 I will stick to the 35mm download, it looks the best and the most natural and accurate to a 1980's theatrical screening.
It´s impossible to remember how films looked at the theatre when i (or anybody) saw them in the late 70´s and during the 80´s and even the 90´s. I can´t even remember how they looked on tv and VHS except that they had a lot of grain and scratches.
And human memory is deceptive too. Try watching a movie you ”remember by heart” after a 10 year break or so and you’ll notice that there are scenes in there which you have no memory of at all.
It should be understood that film fades over time. I do not know the source of the 35mm examples shown, but they are likely from a release print or trailer reel. Those colors will be pretty far off from the OCN, answer print or the release prints at the time. Red...or magenta, tends to be the color that fades the least, as I've seen many aged prints from the 70's and 80's that were almost entirely magenta. Something to understand is the technicians working on these transfers have access to the OCN, interpositive, etc, that we do not see. Our frame of reference is almost exclusively previous video releases which were usually very compromised, TV and maybe worn 35mm prints. Those fan transfers from 35mm prints that float around online are not entirely accurate, those prints colors have likely faded significantly.
I finished watching it last night and yes while I think its sharpness and clarity is a bit jarring,it certainly is an incredible viewing experience, bringing the viewer closer to the film and giving an immersion never before available, probably not even cinematically. I think given the age of the film this is certainly the definitive way to watch it,and I think anyone wanting it to look and sound any better is really being unreasonable, because it is a big leap forward even over the blu ray, which as stated was very good. At the end of the day the only thing worth saying here, no matter what the technology used is whether this is a fantastic viewing experience overall, and it certainly is.
I bought this on AppleTV for $5 a day before it upgraded to 4K. I thought it looked great as well. I kept looking at Sarah’s feathered hair to see if the AI would mess it up. My eye just kept getting drawn to it for some reason. I didn’t notice anything though. 😂
I do really like the teal look, it gives the film a machine futuristic type look. However I would like to see the original colour grading on this. I would gladly pay again for another release of this film so as to get the definitive version
I have The Terminator on Blu-Ray. I bought it here in Australia. They added some bits back into the film, so it's longer, but they ruined the colours for the scene where the Terminator broke into Sarah's apartment while her flat mate was there with her boyfriend. It's the same as the version I saw for an anniversary release at the cinema. The entire movie looked a bit wrong, because of the weird things they did with the colours. It was definitely too blue in parts.
I'll wait to see what That Damm Fool Idealistic Crusade has to say about this transfer. His breakdowns of the terrible 4K releases of The Godfather and Indiana Jones films were very in-depth and informative. And his roasting of the recent Cameron releases on 4K was fantastic. So I'll wait to see what happens after this and if they actually do a good version of T2 on 4k.
Great review. Just noting that (as far as I know) James Cameron doesn't have as much control over The Terminator films as he sold the rights for $1 back in the day so that he could be the director, so he probably wasn't as involved, if at all. in this remaster. All of his other films were through 20th Century where he usually has full control over his projects. That is probably why the treatment here is different from his other recent releases.
If there’s a scale of Picky-ness in terms of 4K Transfers, I’m probably on the low end. I didn’t mind any of the infamous James Cameron Transfers, for example. The only 4K transfer that I personally thought looked terrible was the one done for AMERICAN GRAFFITI. Great Movie, but whatever was done to it with the recent 4K version….yeah, no.
I'm the same with you as to not noticing the hated Cameron transfers. I'm not saying that people are imagining things or that they're too picky, just that I didn't notice these things until they were pointed out to me.

Omg that intro was amazing 😳😂
The mono mix is the reason I will get this
The Mono track is worse than the one one the 1991 LaserDisc.
Harsh and thin.
If you have the original special edition d.v.d containing ALL the bonus features, hold on to that one.
great review, I just loved this transfer! it's almost as good as Titanic 4k.
you earned a new sub! btw, it was a 2k scan upscaled.
Looked great on theaters and my copy just arrived!
Got this last week and watched it Sunday with mates. The transfer was amazing.
Oliver we love your channel keep it up ❤
Only the international releases of the special edition DVD omitted the mono track, which was a standard MGM practice so they could fit a bunch of dub tracks on the discs; it could still be found on the region 1 and region 3 releases, so it wasn't until blu-ray it was truly gone across the board.
Another lovely review!
Saw it on a projector a few months ago can’t wait to get it here in Australia in 4K
if I can only have 1 4K movie it would be this one! I am blown away by the quality, alot of 4k discs dont blow me away like this one!
It’s not an upscale it’s from a 4K scan from 2013 I believe.
Where can we find the 35mm copy?
I have this 4K version , and it’s worth the investment ❤ I love it
Watching it right now and its theres so much detail. Nothing like T2. I set my to the warmest settings. Looks great to me. Even on my old 7.1 surround sound is active.
I feel that sound was every bit as important as image with a movie like The Terminator. This release was excellent in both. Wasn't a fan of the teal palette as it made it looked dated so this was a joy to watch with the original mono.
very tempted, only own this on DVD and never upgraded to blu ray, so it may be time!
Just buy the 2012 Blu-Ray. Not ideal, but it's perfectly watchable and a LOT cheaper. The UHD is just the same master used in that Blu-Ray upscaled with AI. The only benefit of the UHD is the original mono mix is included
The Terminator is a classic.
Ohhh 4K UHD very cool. Super iconic film 🎞️
Hopefully, we can get a 4K release
of Clint Eastwood's *"DIRTY HARRY"*
films with their original theatrical
sound mix (Mono for the first four
films & Dolby Stereo for the last film)
added back in.
This is the only review that matters
I'm really starting to get the feeling that Cameron is hiring Skynet themselves to make these awful AI remasters lol.
One of the rare occasions of "nah I'm still good with the dvd"
@ I always stick with my dvd's. I love the older looks they have compared to the new formats
@@SultanSametVHS for me, as I’m still mostly sour on the Dolby remaster.
Even in light of knowing why the mono track was originally chosen.
It's a lazy way to make a lot of money 😊
We need a T800 to go back in time and stop skynet from doing these remasters!
Aghh burning in the 3rd degree classic.🤘😄🤘
All these remasters remind me Father Ted hammering away at the car
Luckily i got the 35mm scan also. Its so much more gritty and overall color scheme as i remember it first time watching it as a kid. 🤓
Glad to see it's not another True Lies mess of a 4k.
Gonna be picking up The Abyss at some point but I'm unsure about Cameron's other 4K releases.
the atmos track is superb
I never noticed the scenes Oliver was on about with the wires and crew. Clearly I'm not that observant haha
I think I'll stick with my blu ray.
Another great review.
now the only thing we need are the punchy soundeffects into dolby atmos and we will have a near perfect edition? i suppose the fact they at least added the mono is a win. xD
I don't even liked the Blu-ray, to me it looked very teal, and this 4K looks even more teal. The new HDR is a disaster, it's worse than the SDR of the first Blu-ray in terms of highlights, especially in flames and explosions. To me this 4K is not worth it.
Also, I don't wanna support the use of AI on the restoration of live action footage, if I wanted live action films to be remade into animated CGI films, I would probably watch a Disney movie instead, at least they aren't made by an AI... yet.😂
I will stick to the 35mm download, it looks the best and the most natural and accurate to a 1980's theatrical screening.
Wow. I never noticed the missing blade.
@@GRORGvideot It happened to me. Movies that i watched dozens and dozens of times and there are details that i haven´t noticed before.
DUN DA DUN DA DUNN
Damn shame there’ll never be an Ultimate Edition with extensive special features.
I do really like the teal look, it gives the film a machine futuristic type look. However I would like to see the original colour grading on this. I would gladly pay again for another release of this film so as to get the definitive version
Wish they would allow an option to watch it in its original format on these remastered special edition releases.
I heard Titanic 4k transfer was spectacular too
I just watched my old Blu-ray the lack of bonus content from the DVD is so obvious I need to buy the DVD again
The only replaced sounds I don't mind are the "phased plasma" gunshots taken from T2.
I think the rights returned to him. If not, they will soon.
Just want the original mono (Gun sounds) 😊
It's on the disc, he says this in the review.
@ 👍 thanks mate
@@lookitskazzyOh thank god for that
35 mm is a real live picture, such as I saw in the cinema in 1991
8:28 Where are the operators behind the terminator opening the door? I don't see them....
Blu ray upscaled in a 4k player stunning no need to up grade.
