I think we need to stop making excuses for 2K upscales when Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs both had their film reels rescanned into native 4k, and even lower budget releases for less revered movies like Mask of The Phantasm go the extra mile and rescan all the negatives. Such a shame, especially considering this is likely the last transfer we'll ever get of this movie, a cheap option to get a quick buck out of a beloved property
@@NYC_Goody They did, the original camera and film negatives which are definitely preserved somewhere in a studio vault, it just takes time and effort to re-edit and color time for a new DI, and they didn't want to spend the money on it. Meanwhile SEINFELD and FRIENDS had all of its footage rescanned in 4k. It's a lot easier for studios to dig up an old 2K DI file, run an upscale program, and pay for someone to slap on some HDR than to do the job properly. Stop making excuses and just admit you don't really care about picture quality. If they wanted to do it properly, they would. They are just being greedy and lazy, and they can afford to do so because of people like you and your low standards. @NYC_Goody
I have Kill Bill The Whole Bloody Affair on Blu-ray which seamlessly combines both movies and includes alternate angles, a deleted scene reinserted, the Japanese edit of The Crazy 88 fight scene which is in color with extended footage, among other little things. I'd love to upgrade the quality to 4K, but the $30 price tag each with no new special features is a bummer. The steelbook is nice, but I actually prefer the design of the standard covers.
The whole reason he did that scene in b&w was because either that or it would be cut to avoid NC17 rating. In Japan it was shown all in color. So why couldn't they do all color on 4k release..
It is completely possible to rescan the OCN in 4K, reassemble the film, titles and color grade to match. This has been done many times! This would take money and time that even smaller labels will put in. The fact is, Lionsgate is launching their fake boutique label, emulating Paramounts, but not putting the effort into the movies. It’s all packaging and no substance. The good news is, I save about $50 not buying these 2. Studios also need to be upfront about this before release, it’s bordering on fraud.

Otherwise, there is no evidence that any new animation parts exist except that it was talked about decades ago at this point. Otherwise it’s safe to say the edit that Tarantino did already is just the Japanese cut edited with vol 2 with a couple scenes taken out of vol 1. 4. Tarantino has already said that he doesn’t see TWBA being released on physical media. We need to let it go. 5. From what I understand, and this is is the case with many films shot in the early 2000’s, it’s not as easy to just scan from the original negative. As with Inglorious Basterds, there are technicalities that make the 2k DI more practical to work with to upscale instead. So please don’t go into most films being upgraded to 4k from this time period expecting to see a native 4k presentation. It will look great still but it won’t look like a new movie. I think we need to start appreciating that for what it is.
What you are saying is true, but I found the other day online on a not so legal website (The Jack Sparrow Bay if you know what I mean) a very recently released version of Kill Bill Vol 1 in 4K (the file was 51gb) and at my surprise it was the Japanese cut, and it was all in glorious 4K, not the international version with upscaled footage from the Japanese cut taken from the DVD (what would look awful in 4K), it was the Japanese cut with the black and white all in full color. Only difference is the opening said "Revenge is a dish best served cold" instead of "This movie is dedicated to master filmmaker Kinji Fukasaku". So there is a 4K copy of the Japanese cut out there somewhere. Just saying.

No way I'm paying $40 for an ugly steelbook (and I'm someone who LOVES steelbooks and this film in particular); I already have the superior art Blu steelbooks.
@@midlevelmedia A new 4K scan does nothing to change his "vision" or the look, etc. A master is a master. It is the final 35mm film copy of the movie exactly the way he intended. Scanning that master to 4K (or more likely 6K or 8K) just gives a better digital master with increased resolution (4-6K can capture all the resolution of 35mm film). 2K is blu ray quality. "Up-scaling" it to a 4K disc is exactly what you're 4K player does when it sends a 1080p resolution Blu Ray to your 4K TV. The only reason to buy a 4K upscale is that hopefully the upscale in the studio is better than your home player; which to some degree it probably is. I have a very decent Oppo player and the increase improvement from the 4K would only be the color management/HDR. To me that's worth $10-15 at the most. Re-do a proper 4K master and I'd pay what ever they would charge. I'd buy a $100+ deluxe edition if it was a true 4K image. LOL I've bought at least 4-5 4K copies of 2001: A Space Odyssey in various "deluxe" versions. I love that film too and it's true 4K and probably the best master I've ever seen.
Well... either I order off scamazon and get a torn up piece of sh*t or I spend an arm and a leg on this steelbook which I can't really do right now because tax and shipping will bring this closer to like $55 or whatever. Unfortunately this video was uploaded a half hour ago so I missed the window to get these before selling out. So my options are either a $700 copy on eBay or have someone sh*t out a standard at the Scamazon warehouse. Oh well... 🤷♂️
You may want to think that Kill Bill Vol: 1 is a standalone movie, but it's not! In reality, Kill Bill Vol I & 2 is one movie. That was Quentin Tarantino's intentions for the movie when he filmed both 1 & 2 together, as being a one 4-hour movie.
What's weird to me is the steelcase of vol 1 has better artwork but yet the standard vol 2 has better artwork than the steelcase at least in my opinion, You'd think they'd do the best artwork on the steelcases.
Bottom line, for me, the scene that sears 'Volume 1' into my mind is the moment that Flamenco-clap Santa Esmeralda version of 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' kicks-off the Katana fight sequence is classic!
Every review of these I've seen has been positive. This is the first time pre-ordering anything from them so hopefully they'll ship discs in time to be here by release date. At least my Inglorious Basterds from Arrow actually showed up from Amazon today.
Just because Kill Bill Vol 2 isn't as good as Vol 1, it doesn't mean that Vol 1 is a standalone movie. The die-hard fans of Kill Bill are refusing to acknowledge and accept the fact that Kill Bill 1&2 is one movie, just because they like Vol 1 better. If the director (Quentin Tarantino) says Kill Bill 1&2 is one movie, then it's one movie.
Can’t wait to get my copies in. I’m going with the Slipcovers for Jackie Brown and Kill Bill because I own Django and Hateful Eight on Blu Ray with slipcovers but when they release the 4K editions I’ll be just getting the Slipcovers for them. Can’t wait to revisit them because me and my mom rented them and we were blown away by how crazy it got especially during the final big set piece
A 4k version of this movie, and Vol 2, are going to be great. I'm not expecting native 4k, because it would take the original year out of the film if it was. But a 2k upscale would give it a bit more sharpness, without doing too much, that's what's going to make it maybe one of the most fine tuned picture on a 4k disc of this year.
Great review, can’t wait to get mine. I just ordered the nonsteelbook versions even though the steelbooks are beautiful. My Blurays are quite old and still have the non-lossless audio so these 4Ks will be a huge audio upgrade for me too. Disappointing that they cheaped out by introducing no new special features.
You need to check out Shawscope Volume 1. You will know what I mean once you pop in the first movie, King Boxer. Pai Mei is the villain in one of the movies; Executioners from Shaolin, I think. These are kungfu movies from the 1960s, so don’t expect them to be as elegantly choreographed as Kill Bill’s. They get better in the 1970s. Also, watch Game of Death. Actually, watch the other Bruce Lee films first before Game of Death, which is a bit wonky due to the fact that Lee died early in the production of the film, so you can kind of imagine what they had to do (without CG) to make it seem like he’s still around for a good duration of the film.
@ Some may be a bit hard to get through, but if you can stomach those Z-grade films from Vinegar Syndrome, this should be a walk in the park. 😂 My highlights from that box would be Five Venoms, Dirty Ho (it’s not what you think), Heroes of the East, and the ridiculous King Kong rip-off, Mighty Peking Man. Others would point out that the other films are classics too, but I don’t think they aged as well as these ones (except for MPM).
Think I'll be holding out for a proper rescan. As it is my early blu-ray release with uncompressed PCM soundtrack looks and sounds great upscaled by my old DP900.
Mostly I just want the Steelbook so it looks nicer on my shelf than the old Blu-ray double-pack I have in the standard case... As long as the 4K looks at least somewhat better than the Blu-rays, I will be happy.
I pre-ordered mine the first day pre-orders went up. Being that I am just a pleeb I have not got my copy yet. I know official release date is next Tuesday, but knowing shipping I will consider myself lucky if I still get this month.
Also I will say this, if you are even remotely interested or think you might be interested in the Steelbook, don’t let the 40$ now bother you, re-sellers on eBay and such will buy them up and charge 2-3x that price, or more
Great movies and I like the steel books. I’d been hoping this would get a chunky box set release - with the uncensored Whole Blood Affair and loads of extra features and deleted scenes. I wonder if it’ll be released in future as some sort of special / anniversary edition.
Im waiting on these since im not too sure how its going to look and there are no new extras. And the steelbooks are way over priced. This is for collectors, not your average consumer 😔 I really wanted to be more excited for Kill Bill 1&2. Its one of my favs from QT.
The fight with Elle Driver was better than O Shi Ren, The Bride makes her look inadequate , the ending with The Bride went on for too long , Does Tarantino self edit, cos that part is too talky, sorry about the beginning Ken thats in no 2 its just my opinion.
something to know is this is approved by Tarantino the video, the audio and even the extras are as he wants them to be so if you have a problem with this release take it up with Tarantino
I don't have a problem I'll just save my money. I don't know why you're so salty for Quentin Tarantino maybe you should get his sausage out of your mouth
I was a fan of Lionsgate Steelbooks at $25-$30 but not $40. The Walmart exclusives are $43. I'll wait for a sale or a better edition for that much money.
I'm with you upscale is a cop out it isn't worth 35 40 dollars if you don't put your foot down you'll never know when to quit my blu ray is good enough
Does anyone know what kind of 4K TV you have why isn't that constantly mentioned in your options? I think anyone listing to someone's options when it comes to 4k movies should own a top tier TV and surround sound unit. It's just odd to me why anyone would care about your opinion. It's like if I asked you what kind of steak you like to eat before I make my decision I just don't give it😂 If you like this movie most likely your buying.
Because of the way Tarintino shoots his films. I just don't have much faith any of his 4ks will blow me away. I would still like a Tarantino 4k Box set and won't buy them until the Box Set. I'll rent them.
I wish you would let us know if the special features are available on both disks. This factors into my buying choices. Is the blu ray a bonus or required as it holds all the special features?
Is It the Uncensored Japanese Edition? I refuse to buy anything until that one is out. (The way to tell is the Eyeball pluck scene is all in color no B&W, and at the end The Bride cuts off Sophie's other arm "Give Me Your Other Arm!!!" If you look when she rolls down the hill she has no arms left)
If it is Limited, then it should have all the features like Arrow Video & Second Sight for $39.99. Not truly boutique yet? Paying more for the steelbook artwork. Oh Ken by the way my Inglorious Bastards 4K boxset was not sold out at Barnes & Noble. Their website said sold out and I could not reserved for in-store pick-up. when I got there, they had 2 copies of the 4K version sitting on the display. So I bought one and had my copy of 4K version of Trick R Treat reserved. Now I know that location is not accurate.
Paramount should released instead of liongate like they does with pulp fiction because it was by miramax strange that liongate as the right of kill bill vol 1 and 2 🤔
Bought the DVDs years ago so this will be a nice upgrade for me. Just got an email saying that my steelbooks of kill Bill 1 and 2 should be arriving soon. Steelbook all day long baby. Can't wait.
This is Not perfect. I've had the Japanese DVD release which doesn't have the censored black and white scenes. Get that version as it's the one Tarantino wanted to release before the ratings board got a hold of it.
This is not true.... it was always meant to be black and white. His plan was to get an x rating and then switch to to black and white to compromise but he ended up getting an R, so he changed it anyway. Read the original script, it says the color switches.
The regular version is enough for me for this release, the steelbook is not that great imo. Awesome movie though, definitely an all time Top 10 for me.
Im definitely picking these up, but why are the pre order prices so expensive? I expect these prices from the boutiques, but Lionsgate? 52.99 CAD wtf 😂

Yeah that often puzzles me. Mainly because they are “just” collectors and no TRUE movie aficionados. The Japanese DC needs to be part of everyone’s collection, even if it’s only on DVD. The animationsequence that tells the background story to O-Ren Ishii is an essential part of the movie to me, as is the hommage to Japanese film makers at the start of the movie that was ommited for the Western release versions.

Unfortunately this video was uploaded a half hour ago so I missed the window to get these before selling out. So my options are either a $700 copy on eBay or have someone sh*t out a standard at the Scamazon warehouse. Oh well... 🤷♂️
was hoping the pitcher quality was going to be amazing
You may want to think that Kill Bill Vol: 1 is a standalone movie, but it's not! In reality, Kill Bill Vol I & 2 is one movie. That was Quentin Tarantino's intentions for the movie when he filmed both 1 & 2 together, as being a one 4-hour movie.
What's weird to me is the steelcase of vol 1 has better artwork but yet the standard vol 2 has better artwork than the steelcase at least in my opinion, You'd think they'd do the best artwork on the steelcases.
The way I understood it reading other reviews, this is simply an upscale.
Bottom line, for me, the scene that sears 'Volume 1' into my mind is the moment that Flamenco-clap Santa Esmeralda version of 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' kicks-off the Katana fight sequence is classic!
I love it so much. So good!
It has to be the steelbook collection
Every review of these I've seen has been positive. This is the first time pre-ordering anything from them so hopefully they'll ship discs in time to be here by release date. At least my Inglorious Basterds from Arrow actually showed up from Amazon today.
I agree, this movie stands on its own. I love it from start to finish. The second one just didn't hit as good to me, and I don't know why
I like vol. 1 and 2 since watching them a while back. I already bought both sbs last week & just waiting on their arrival.
I have both of these on the way from Lions Gate. Did get my copy of the Snowpiercer 4k steel today, another awesome release.
@@richardbaker183 They are on fire right now!
Revisiting these really made me want to dive into Shawscope.
How do both films in 4K with their DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mixes sound compared to their LPCM 5.1 counterparts found on their past Blu-ray's?
Is the battle of the Crazy 88 in color or still in b&w?
Think I'll be holding out for a proper rescan. As it is my early blu-ray release with uncompressed PCM soundtrack looks and sounds great upscaled by my old DP900.
Mostly I just want the Steelbook so it looks nicer on my shelf than the old Blu-ray double-pack I have in the standard case... As long as the 4K looks at least somewhat better than the Blu-rays, I will be happy.
I'll pick these up down the line when GRUV or Amazon has 3 for $33 or similar sales. Not paying $30 each unless the transfer is phenomenal.
Amazon never has 3 for $33 for 4K movies.
@@slimdude2011 It's going on right now. I assume this is sarcasm rather than ignorance?
I have the XX Collection. I’m good for now. I wouldn’t buy Kill Bill unless it’s the Whole Bloody Affair.
Does this have the crazy 88 fight in colour? Dont cate if its an upscale. It'll look better than my Japanese DVD where the scene is in colour.
KB 1/2 should have been combined like the whole bloody affair.
My goal is to have all Tarantino in Steelbook. Just need Django and Hateful 8 now
I prefer the aerwork on the slipcover version, i mean who did the designs of the 4k/ steelbooks of kill bill, not great, what were they thinking?
I pre-ordered mine the first day pre-orders went up. Being that I am just a pleeb I have not got my copy yet. I know official release date is next Tuesday, but knowing shipping I will consider myself lucky if I still get this month.
I would buy that Kill Bill steel book Ken I love the movie it's awesome
For me i can not think on Kill Bill as just the first movie, for me thats just half of a movie, both volumes are one single thing in my opinion
DOUBLE DIPPING!!🤘
Kill Bill Vol. 1 ends on a massive cliffhanger and Bill is still alive. It sure isn't a standalone movie
Cant wait another title we won't get till march in the uk why didn't they release the Japanese version also on 4k.
This is kinda disappointing that it isn't a native transfer and no audio upgrade.
Just got my email this morning:
"Pre-Shipment - Pre-Shipment, USPS Awaiting Item"
The fight with Elle Driver was better than O Shi Ren, The Bride makes her look inadequate , the ending with The Bride went on for too long , Does Tarantino self edit, cos that part is too talky, sorry about the beginning Ken thats in no 2 its just my opinion.
Do you like the kill bill mivies
Love the movie, love Steelbooks. But I can't justify $39.99 for a movie. I'll stay with the Blu-ray version
something to know is this is approved by Tarantino the video, the audio and even the extras are as he wants them to be so if you have a problem with this release take it up with Tarantino
I don't have a problem I'll just save my money. I don't know why you're so salty for Quentin Tarantino maybe you should get his sausage out of your mouth
He was fine with it coming out in DVD format too. Just because he "approved it" doesn't mean it's as good as it could be.
I was a fan of Lionsgate Steelbooks at $25-$30 but not $40. The Walmart exclusives are $43. I'll wait for a sale or a better edition for that much money.
What Walmart exclusives?
Cancelling my order. I'm not going to support their lazy remasters. When they do a proper 4K rescan I'll pony up the cash. Especially for 30-40 bucks.
Sometimes I mention this in my reviews, but it’s listed in the description below if you’re interested.
I got the kill bill 1&2 and Jackie brown slips all $26 each via diabolik
Fail. I'll wait until it's $10. I'll keep watching my Whole Bloody Affair on Blu-ray.
is the fight with the crazy 88's in color?? i will definitely order this if its the director's cut
The black and white is the director's cut.... even in the original draft screenplay it says the color switches to black and white
Good looking steelbooks but I wouldn't say lionsgate is coming back strong with $40 steelbooks.
I love kill bill
Just pre order dirty Harry pale rider and the outlaw Josey Wales 4k steelbooks and Street trash collector's edition 😊😊
You sold me Ken! Ima Def pick this one up myself. 😂
Because of the way Tarintino shoots his films. I just don't have much faith any of his 4ks will blow me away. I would still like a Tarantino 4k Box set and won't buy them until the Box Set. I'll rent them.
Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction 4Ks both looked great.
@@Zachary_Dale Jackie Brown does too, apparently.
I wish you would let us know if the special features are available on both disks. This factors into my buying choices. Is the blu ray a bonus or required as it holds all the special features?
Special features are on both discs here.
I'm more interested in Jackie Brown because that one is Native 4K. No 2K upscale.
Review coming Thursday
Is It the Uncensored Japanese Edition? I refuse to buy anything until that one is out. (The way to tell is the Eyeball pluck scene is all in color no B&W, and at the end The Bride cuts off Sophie's other arm "Give Me Your Other Arm!!!" If you look when she rolls down the hill she has no arms left)
Actually, if you look when she rolls down she has one arm.... the black and white sequence was always intended
Keep your high hopes up. Regular version as will, unfortunately, be the case with Hateful Eight.
Vol I and II never felt like the same movie to me. Agreed. Vol I is SO much better than II.
“Upscaled”
Immediate no sale.
Pass
Love these movies but damn expensive. 🤬
Paramount should released instead of liongate like they does with pulp fiction because it was by miramax strange that liongate as the right of kill bill vol 1 and 2 🤔
Ken really going for that 🏆 lol just playing. Awesome review 🎉
Tarantino is ok … once. But I have never wanted to rewatch any of his films
this deserves a Native 4K restoration and additional features.
So the big restaurant fight is still black and white? Would at least like the option to watch the colour Chinese version.
It’s black and white and color.
The regular version is enough for me for this release, the steelbook is not that great imo. Awesome movie though, definitely an all time Top 10 for me.
Definate let down by lack of special features, Must Try Harder, Not worth 40!!!
I think I’m gonna cancel my pre-order for these and Jackie Brown. So fed up with expensive 4K discs that are just lazy upscales.
May want to hold back on Jackie Brown. That’s not an upscale. That’s a native 4K.
@ owwww thanks for the heads up! :)
Im definitely picking these up, but why are the pre order prices so expensive? I expect these prices from the boutiques, but Lionsgate? 52.99 CAD wtf 😂
One reason why im not buying these. Yet.
Nice review of kill bill on 4k ken. And i will be picking up the regular 4k release of kill bill 1& 2 bc I don't waste money on over price steel books. And when are you going to do a blockbuster ken room tour of all your movies you have in your collection? Bc we all would love to see all your duplicates of all the double you have in your movies collection blockbuster ken
Dont waste your money. Transfer isn't good
Is Arrow eventually going to re release these in a box with a bunch of bullshit in it?
I love Kill Bill 1 and 2‼ ... I hate to say it, but the artworks on both steel books are dreadful. I would have preferred the original picture of Uma holding the sword downright‼ ⚔
Kill Bill 2 is the better volume.
Why are 4K reviewers clueless about the uncensored Japanese version on DVD?
Yeah that often puzzles me. Mainly because they are “just” collectors and no TRUE movie aficionados.
The Japanese DC needs to be part of everyone’s collection, even if it’s only on DVD.
The animationsequence that tells the background story to O-Ren Ishii is an essential part of the movie to me, as is the hommage to Japanese film makers at the start of the movie that was ommited for the Western release versions.
@pieterbalk-ht7kq I've only seen it 65,000 times. A mate burnt a DVD with English subtitles on at the right moments. But I quite enjoy Japanese.
@ the Dutch DFW blu ray had this Japanese version in full color.
@@pieterbalk-ht7kq I have that but I still prefer having the other gore shots present too.
@@RodneyAllanPoe you mean the b&w versions or additional bloody scènes that are Japan only? I gotta check that Japanese DVD again but don’t watch these movies regularly. And never did a one on one comparison.
I only have the DVDs of both films. I just ordered the Steelbooks because I collect them too when they are good.
