Yes Joe! Bring back more JDM classics from the 90's. Love watching this. I don't see Mitsubishi recovering from their current state. Nissan/Infiniti are also falling off the cliff now. Let's hope they don't end up in the same position.
I was also in high-school in 1994 and was into EVERYTHING cars. I have zero memories of this car. This is amazingly the first time I've ever seen this car. I don't know how that happened but you showed a car nut something completely new. Thanks Joe. BTW? How was it driving right hand drive?
How have I never heard of this? I love 90s cars especially JDM. Thank you so much for showing this to me! I love this car it reminds me of my RSX in a lot of ways too.
Car enthusiasts: Once upon a time there were great cars made by an iconic company named "Mitsubishi". Nowadays korean cars owners: What is an FTO we never heard of it.
That was when the best cars were made unlike the over engineered stuff today. They were easy to work on, parts were cheap, and performance upgrades were cheap as well.
Funny how people quickly dismiss a car like this because it's a FWD. What most people don't realize is that it performs better in stock form than most N/A rivals of its time. Including an ITR / CTR. Mitsubishi - the brand that always built stuff of dreams, but never applied itself. Check out the COTY edition FTO driving around in Central TX if you're anywhere close ;)
I remember this car from two things, the first was Gran Turismo, the second was the movie First Strike starring Jackie Chan, he drives a red one off a ramp on to a moving boat.
Damn, Joe that must be a surreal experience to drive a car in aVideogame that only existed in another country and years later, you’re driving the real thing!! Also, those tail lights remind me of a late 90s Nissan 280sx
I am so so so stoked this car got a proud review by none other than Raiti's Rides. If you older folks can remember this car in Gran Turismo 2, this car was an absolute beast. The FTO LM Edition Race Car was my best performing vehicle and I used it on countless races. Good Times, Good Times. Thanks so much Joe for the trip down memory lane!
I remember these!!!! Very cool coupes!!! Glad we're able to import them now!!! Also when Mitsubishi used to have soul. Omg find an Evo and do a throwback review will ya Joe? That would be awesome man!!! Or a 3000 GT!!! Legendary coupes!!!
Is the automatic one noticeably slower than the manual one? I watched a review and saw a comment saying that the automatic one is substantially slower than the manual one.
I remember getting this as my first car in Gran Turismo back in the day and really thought it never existed. Such a awesome little car. Edit: lol just saw you mention it 😂. The real value was getting the fc rx7
One of my favorite cars ! I remember this car from gran turismo 2 for ps1. You gotta review a rx7 3rd gen still one of my dream cars after all these years so timeless. Awesome video Raiti 👊🏻👍🏻
Used to own the FTO GPX when i lived in NZ 20 years ago, was the best looking compact sports car back then. 2 liter v6 with MIVEC, very impressive. And if you happened to have watched one of the Jackie Chans old movie called "Thunderbolt", he drove this thing and beat the crap out of a GTR32(lol, just in the movie).
@@Adamgrider1982 Actually it be mainly a lancer(that most of the sales come from), a hatchback version to compete with Honda hatch, an SUV n of course the iconic 4 door saloon be hybrid of gas n electric with all 3 companies joining in production(Renault Megane RS ENGINE, mitsu awd drive and body and Nissan electronics.
Yes I've had a yellow one in Gran Turismo and I used to have a silver one in real life as you can see in my profile, a manual GPX with the facelift. Facelift makes a huge difference in my eyes, much more cooler and beautiful. I did a lot of road races back in the day and had lots of fun. I think it aged really well, its look doesn't look that old as other 90s cars like the GTO/3000GT. I used to love its sound too. I always wanted a GP Version R model though. I still do. If you plan to get one look for that version. By the way usually there ARE Mitsubishi badges on the front and back of the car.
I used to own the non mivic version and semi auto FTO GR here in the UK. Great little cars and still look great for their age and a whole lot of fun, they have a good following here in the UK, but are becoming rarer as more are scrapped.
I was 8 when I was playing grab turismo 2 on my dads old PlayStation when I fell in love with the fto. I’m 16 now and have owned a real fto for 18 months now after getting one for Christmas. So cool to see Americans getting them now (I’m british) as you guys look at them so differently compared to over here
Nice find and review! I also knew about this car from Gran Turismo. Jackie Chan also drove one of these in a movie back in the day. I was always bummed that they didn't sell these here. It would've been a cool option along side the Eclipse GST/GSX.
Great channel, I actually own one of these imported in UK and had an fto gpx mivec since 2001, there's a reason why it was Japanese car of the year in 94 and it's Jackie Chan favourite car I love it it's my baby and kind of her quiet little secret as in till you drive when you don't realise how addictive that MIVEC is it's actually better sounding than a VTEC and I have one of them as well. They also handle because the chassis is basically and Evo 6👍
Wow it's like a blue collar GT-R /Skyline circa 1994. I had Gran Turismo, but I think I thought this car was fake. I probably would have bought one as I was pining for a Mitsu Eclipse at the time, but my budget only allowed for a Saturn SC2 coupe. Nowhere near as much fun as this car. Nice review! I like it!
Wow!!! Joe, this was a car I had wet dreams about back in the day. I absolutely loved this car, and hoped they would sell it here. Anyway, thank you very much!! Love your vids.
Such a smooth, clean design. I knew of this car, but had never actually known much about it, thank you for bringing it to your channel Joe. I hope to see Mitsubishi expanding their lineup in the future again. Wait.......8K Redline!! I didn't think anything but vtecs and rotary engines revved like that. Besides exotic cars that is. I do wish the suspension wasn't modified, so you could get a better impression of the original FTO. Great review of a very unique vehicle.
Joe great review! This car is iconic to me cause I remember it to on the original GT game as well. I have to say this is one of my favorite car reviews you have done. Thanks!
Joe, this is one of your best videos. As you said, I am very familiar with this car as an avid GT player when I was a teen. I remember the epic FWD burnouts I got that thing to do, haha.
My 1994 was a UK grey market import. An Air Force person brought it over from Japan in 2014, but it had a 4-speed automatic. I miss that 8000 rpm sound. the 6A12 was a solid engine and pretty easy to work on.
I was just about to mention Gran Turismo in the comments just before you said it for me. Such great memories on the original PlayStation. My favorite car was the 92 NSX and I loved the night track on the highway. I always loved to race that track with different cars and watch the awesome replays to see how great the cars sounded when they did the drive by camera view through the tunnel
Awesome motor, I've had two! Put a stainless exhaust on it and it'll absolutely sing. Just make sure you buy the top of the range Mivec as reviewed, and avoid the 4 speed auto which is lazy and really slows the car.
Great review, really enjoyed it. I had an FTO in the early 2000s, lots of them were imported to the UK from Japan. I had the same model as reviewed, manual GPX Mivec. Great fun, and made a great sound, always thought it could have done with a tiny bit more power, but no easy tuning routes, unless you put a VR4 or Evo engine in one. But good performance none the less.
MiniDisc player not Cassette, Japan used to have shops where you could rent CDs and most people would dub them to MiniDiscs, common to see JDM cars still with factory MiniDisc units right upto the 2010s haha
Absolutely loved gran turismo as a kid and discovered some of my favorite cars due to that game. The Mazda RX-7 is another of my favorite Japanese cars thanks to gt.
Mitsubishi: We made great cars !
Also Mitsubishi : Let's bring those great cars back as crossovers!!!!!!!!
It makes me so sad!
That is a major zonk to me 😂
"made" for sure, RIP
@@RaitisRides Me too. The current Eclipse SUV should not even be allowed to have that name on it.
It literally felt like Mitsubishi just gave car enthusiasts the middle finger the moment the revived the eclipse as a crossover.
All it needs is overnight parts from Japan
This is true!
It's not a Supra 😉
"Too soon junior".
You never even had your car.
I live my life a 1/4 mile at a time
I was the owner of FTO. Thank you for bringing me back all my good memory with this great car!
Yes Joe! Bring back more JDM classics from the 90's. Love watching this. I don't see Mitsubishi recovering from their current state. Nissan/Infiniti are also falling off the cliff now. Let's hope they don't end up in the same position.
It really is crazy what has happened!
More JDM classic car reviews please!
I will have more to come!
It is so cool to see 90’s coupes.
Mitsubishi FTO and Eclipse
Toyota Celica and MR2
Honda Prelude and Acura Integra
Nissan Silvia
Wow! It is really good seeing iconic vehicles being reviewed by the best team around! Awesome video Team Raiti's Rides!
This was a really great review of a JDM car that not too many US folks know about! It was a real treat! Thank you!
You are so very welcome Michael!
AWESOME coverage of the forgotten and/or unknown. I remember reading JDM car magazines about these. Thanks Joe!!!!
This FTO is so sexy!! I’ve seen this in older Gran Turismo games!! 😍
Thanks for letting me bring it to you!
This was one of my all time favorite Mitsubishi's. I loved the GP Version R with the slick aero kit.
I was also in high-school in 1994 and was into EVERYTHING cars. I have zero memories of this car. This is amazingly the first time I've ever seen this car. I don't know how that happened but you showed a car nut something completely new. Thanks Joe. BTW? How was it driving right hand drive?

This car reminds me of Gran Turismo,The green special edition FTO 🥺
The sound of that FTO makes me remember my old Mazda MX-3 with a 1.8l V6, sounds beautiful!!!
It would be fun to drive this in town and know that people are looking and asking each other "hey wasn't that guy on the wrong side of the car?"
I know right! It's worth the price of admission!
I've never seen an FTO in real life, GT2, GT3 and GT4 were the only times I've ever seen them, Joe. Great job with this video!
I am so glad that I can bring it to you!
Im starting to love 90’s cars!
It was a special time!
Raiti's Rides yes it was!
Some of the best cars were made then. Toyotas most reliable were made then

I can't believe I've never heard of this car!
That is what I am here for! ;-)

I have a GP Version R Aero manual
Absolutely love it

I should never have sold my FTO. Such fun to drive and great track car.
If a Celica and a Supra had a baby, it would be the FTO
I own 2 of them, a normal one and a special addition fto gpx and there was only around 200 ever produced! Great car!!
