this is the easiest and most effective harness diy that i have seen. i tried making my beardies harness with cloth or a sock like in other tutorials and they didn't work right got eawily snagged on his scales and he would easily wiggle outcof them. This is easy and super.cheap to make and works very well and it looks easier to put on. Thsnk you for showing us how to make a proper halter and leash for the little guys.
Kimberly, you are most welcome! I am so thankful that you can use the idea! My little guy loves being outside and running around the house. Now I can keep up with him and have a harness that will grow with him too.
I just tried this on our baby. Hes only 9 inches long head to tail tip. I used a thinner soft thread that comes out of the paracord and it worked really well. Our beardie skittered in the yard without any impediment to his movements. Thanks for the video
Am I the only one that started cracking up when she pulled Moses out of nowhere off of her shirt? Like, he was just chillin there the whole time, and we didn’t even know!! 😂
Every Lizard should come with this as part of it's starter package! I had bought a few lizard leashes for my young Ackie, but they were all too bulky for the little guy, now I can make my own without having to learn how to sew. Thanks for the awesome idea.
You are so very welcome! It does look awkward on them when they are small but they fit them well. If you look closely in the upper right corner of my video, you will see my boxer moving around!

I almost bought a bearded dragon harness on etsy, until i thought i could maybe make it. I found this video, and it is perfect! My beardie can finally get a little closer to our cats, while being safe! (tip: if you paracord is too thick, and the beads won't fit on it, you can cut out the inside of the paracord and take out the string, if that makes sense :) hope it helps! Again, thanks for this helpful video! Saved me some money.
I'm so glad I found this! I had been on the search for awhile to find a harness for my little dude but I refuse to pay what they want on both Amazon and Etsy. Thank you for this video! I actually have a blue tongue skink, and it's really difficult to find any commercially-available harnesses that will work for them, since they have such awkward, stubby little legs. I tried this and it worked much better than the harness I bought for him! He wasn't able to just slip his legs out like he always does with the other one; this one stayed on and it didn't look like it was pinching or uncomfortable. I haven't tried this harness outside yet (too cold right now), but it worked beautifully inside! I feel a lot more comfortable letting him roam around while wearing this since I know he won't be able to dart away from me and get himself stuck somewhere. He's going to be getting a lot more exercise now!
That is awesome! I have a blue tongue skink also but because of a bad shed before I got her she doesn't have any toes so she just slips right through it. I have been wanting to try to combine two of these to put one around her front legs and the other around her back legs but I haven't done it yet.
The best part is that you don't even have to use paracord - you can use leather cord, silk, make a friendship bracelet cord, maybe weave your own pattern, etc. Also you can bedazzle it, engrave it, bead it, etc. - the possibilities are endless.
Careful with that leather cord. It is probably not a good thing to use as the thin leather layer breaks off very easily. You don't want that around where your beardie may ingest some of it. I bought some of it and trying to get it through the pony bead holes had that outer layer peeling off.
thank you for this. I have tried store bought leashes and other DIY and none of them worked. My Draco would always wiggle out of them or refuse to let me even get them on. This one worked perfectly.

Ok this is the easiest one I’ve seen. My beardies are only 5 months old and they are very squirmy. I made the leash but the only problem is that I get the head in but when I try to put the arms in they squirm out of my hand. Plz help me
Do you think you could put the legs in first? When Moses gets overly anxious I will either put his feet in first or I will hold him in my hand so that I can hold the harness in place while I put the rest of it on. And I have also had to get someone to hold him while I put it on. But he has gotten used to it so I don't have much trouble anymore. Let me know if these suggestions don't work and we'll keep brainstorming.
I had the same problem. My solution was to pull out the inside cord which made it thin enough to go through the beads, and yet still functional and strong, but comfy for my beardies.
I am so sorry for the VERY late reply. I am sure you have already made the harness but my suggestion would be the same as nenni68's or use a bead with at least an 8mm hole. Unfortunately 550 parachord isn't all the same thickness so the one that I used was very thin.
Carmella Rosenbach You are most welcome. If you have problem getting the cord through the bead you may want to burn the ends of it and mold it while it's hot and then use something with a blunt end to push it through.
Puellos _, The beads that I used in the video are the basic size pony beads from Wal-mart. They have an inside diameter of .5 cm or 3/16 of an inch. I used wooden beads with the same size inside diameter because they seemed to give a little more without breaking. Does this help?
I had the same problem. My solution was to pull out the inside cord which made it thin enough to go through the beads, and yet still functional and strong, but comfy for my beardies
Erin, I used 550 paracord which is 4mm. The size of the paracord will depend on how big your lizard is or will get and the size of the beads that you are able to find. The paracord that I bought at Walmart for my personal harness is thicker than the paracord that I bought to use for this video. The purple cord that I used in this video seems to be thinner and easier to fit through the beads. Because a beardie doesn't get very large and doesn't "walk" on the leash then I don't see this being a problem. I would make sure that whatever you use doesn't cut into the lizard. Thank you for your comment.
I’m honestly not understanding how you were able to get the 550 through a pony bead. Even after removing the guts of the cord I still cannot get them on while it is doubled up. Did you use some kind of tool? Or maybe larger pony beads?
You need 18 feet?? Or 18 inches of the paracord?? I think 18 ft would be enough for an alligator lololol but I LOVE LOVE this tutorial!! Thanks it's the best one out there that wont hurt their scales!
I used 550 parachord from Walmart. Some are thicker than others unfortunately. The pony beads don't work as well with thicker cord so I replaced them with colored wooden beads. These beads have an 8 mm hole. I also learned to burn the ends of the cord and mold it while it was still warm to make it easier to push through the hole. It may be easier to use something small to push the second strand through to get it started.
You can either slightly heat up the ends and then pinch them to make them more firm, take the inner part of the paracord out or you may have to get larger beads.
It doesn’t have to be paracord. The reason I chose paracord is because it won’t cut into the animal since they are small and don’t pull, it will hold up against their scales, it is easy to work with meaning that the harness will slide easily on itself and it will last a long time. If you find another material that works, please share. :)
@@pamkidd2577 I tried it with yarn and it just gets caught on all their scritchiness lol. I just ordered one made of paracord instead lol. Excellent tutorial tho!
Jaselly, that is the only challenge that I had with it. The cord that I use in the video was really thin so it worked well. The one I used to make my first leash was much thicker so I really had to search for a bead that was big enough. I ended up burning the ends of the cord and squishing it with plyers so that I could get it started. That worked well. I also found some wooden beads that worked much better than the plastic ones.
Please forgive the VERY late reply!! I didn't realize that my notifications were turned off. I got all of my supplies from Wal-mart but any craft store will work. I would use something a bit larger than 7mm for the center of the bead if you can find it to make it easier to slide the cord through or gut the cord.
herno1, you are most welcome. He will eventually tolerate it and even like it. Moses has learned that when I pull out the leash he gets to run around. I also like it to take him outside to poop. He scratched on his glass when he needs to poop so that I can take him out.
I don't have much experience with geckos but if I had one I would make this harness for it. The only thing I have found it doesn't work on is my blue tongue skink because she just slides right out of it.
I had to burn the ends of the paracord and then push it through with a pointed object. I don't remember if I used a nail or what. The paracord I used for the demo was very flat. It supposedly was 550 but I don't think so. I made another one and used wooden beads from Walmart. They work really well and don't break as easily as the pony beads.
Actually yes. Lol. I made one where I ran enough beads to be the width of my hand on the end of one side then I ran the other string through the other end. I then tried a knot at the end of the strings. Does this make sense?
Can you PLEASE make one for birds too. You showed a very easy method but am sad that it's not for birds. I really hope you make one harness for birds too and see this comment as soon as possible.
I have never thought about making a harness for birds. Will you share with me why this harness doesn't work on your bird so that I can know where to start? In theory it seems like it would work since it shouldn't restrict their wings. I may have to a stuffed bird to practice on. :) I will work on it and let you know.
@@pamkidd2577 I haven't tried making this harness yet but from the video I am not sure how I should put the harness under the wings of my bird and will it be comfortable for the bird having this kind of harness under the wings. It would be a lot more easier if you demonstrate it using your stuffed bird as you said. I'd be really grateful.
@@pamkidd2577 I'll probably be using it to fly my bird but let's see what else can I use it for later once I'm done making it and I know that I'm not the only one looking out for a birds harness so it will also help other people you know. And thank you so much that you're trying so hard for what I told you. I really hope you have a bright future ahead.
I will say, that you can take the guts out of the paracord and make the leash flat. Lizards aren't going to put enough tension on it to actually need the cushion. I also ended up buying 5mm pony beads which were wooden.
I used 550 but it doesn't have to be that. What I used in the video wasn't 550. That's what it was labeled but it was not as thick as the parachord I used to make my first leash. I had to burn the ends of the cord and mold it to get it to go into the bead. I also found that wooden beads work best.
You don’t say what thickness of cord. There are several. I got 4mm. You also don’t give details of the size of beads. I had to guess. Too small! Please can you add more detail? Many thanks.
I am so sorry about that. Funny thing, I actually made the video originally for a friend who lived out of state. The parachord is 550 parachord (they can be different thicknesses). I don't know the size of the beads but I ended up using a wooden bead with an 8mm hole for my other harnesses. It also helps to burn the ends of the cord before trying to push them through the bead.
Pushing the cord through the beads is the hardest part. I burned the ends of the cord to help it to go through. I believe I also had to use a sharpened pencil. Some cord is thicker than others which makes it hard to gauge. The cord I used in the video is much thinner than the one I used for my beardie. You may have to buy some bigger pony beads. I found some wooden ones at Walmart or Hobby Lobby I believe that worked really great.
Hey, Judy. I at the time of the video I thought I was using a 550 parachord but it is much thinner. I did make mine out of 550 but I had to live up to a larger, wooden pony bead that is used in the video that I bought from a craft store. That is a suggestion. Another suggestion is to take the cotton out of the center of the parachord and just use the exterior. I personally like using the larger pony beads.
@@judyjohnson400 yes, because after you double it and turn 6 inches of it into a harness you will only have an 8.5 foot lead. I will often tether Moses to something outside and let him graze and sun bake. That gives him 8.5 feet to move around. :)
@@pamkidd2577 Ok thank you so, so much. Ive been searching for what seems like forever for an inexpensive way to travel with my lil birbs without them getting away ya know? thank u so much for the confrimation!!!💛💕💛💕💛
idk how the frig you got this to work, i bought 550 paracord and normal pony beads and no amount of pulling pushing cursing and cussing was ever going to make those pony beads go on that paracord. Can you please add a discribtion or some links to the items you used in this video, and save the pain of driving back and forth to the store? Thank you.
Undyiing, yes, I certainly will. What part are you having problems with so I know exactly what to address. Please forgive me for not going into further detail in the original video.
Undyiing in the interim, I burned the ends of the cord and molded them to fit through the beads. I did have to use the end of a paperclip or something similar to help push it through and then I twisted the bead as I pushed it down. I have to admit that what I used in the video is not true 550 (I learned that after the video).
Some suggestions are to burn the ends of the parachord, use wooden beads or any beads with a larger center or strip the stuffing out of the parachord. I had to burn the ends of the cord and use wooden beads with another leash that I made. If I remember correctly I was able to get the beads at Wal-mart.
Pam Kidd thanks heaps, have purchased some and some pony beads and some colourful alphabet beads so I can put my girls names on them 🙂 Thanks for such an easy well explained video tutorial
Pam Kidd my gorgeous colourful glitter beads won't go on my doubled over 4mm paracord I'm gutted, I'm struggling to find any beads with bigger than 4mm holes 😢
Oh no! I believe I went to Hobby Lobby to get mine. you must have found true 550 paracord. I ended up finding some wooden beads that worked really well. They were the only pony beads I could find with an opening large enough. I believe I bought two other packs before finding the right size. I found out too late that there are some beads that open up and clamp down on the paracord but I don't remember where I saw them.
ahh cool idea, but im sitting her watching thinking, keep those beads away he might eat them. Ive seen stuff in groups where their dragons eat something they are not suppose to before the owner even realizes it.
I'm not sure how they would get the beads off of it to eat it but I guess all things are possible. My beardie loves being outside. The reality of me losing him if he's not on a leash because they can disappear very quickly in their surroundings is much greater than him somehow getting a bead off of this cord. Thankfully we each have the choice to live life with our critters the way we see fit so enjoy your little one the way it best fits you. :)

I made mine with 18 feet because you have to double it over which leaves you with 9 feet.
@@pamkidd2577 OH Ok i thought it was a mistake , I just thought that was an awful lot.. but i see now!! lolo
For the life of me I can't get the cord to fit in the pony beads when it's double
I’m
Definitely making this tonight for my baby! Weather is warming up soon so he can go out with mommy!!
Let us know how it goes!!
Thats so Cool....Can we Make This For Parrots as wel???
I don't see why this wouldn't work 4 birds as long as you make sure that their wings are free.
How did you manage to get the beads on? 😮💨
You can either slightly heat up the ends and then pinch them to make them more firm, take the inner part of the paracord out or you may have to get larger beads.
Can I just do this with yarn? I’m a knitter so I have tons of yarn. Or does it HAVE to be paracord??
It doesn’t have to be paracord. The reason I chose paracord is because it won’t cut into the animal since they are small and don’t pull, it will hold up against their scales, it is easy to work with meaning that the harness will slide easily on itself and it will last a long time. If you find another material that works, please share. :)
@@pamkidd2577 I tried it with yarn and it just gets caught on all their scritchiness lol. I just ordered one made of paracord instead lol. Excellent tutorial tho!
@@dm2836 thank you for the feedback. :)
Thank you :) I'm bout to get on that rn
This seems like a fantastic idea but I tried it and it didn’t work maybe because I bought a thicker cord than I was supposed to
Jaselly, that is the only challenge that I had with it.
Pam Kidd
Where do you buy your 7mm by 11mm round acrylic pony beads? Thank you.
Please forgive the VERY late reply!! I didn't realize that my notifications were turned off. I got all of my supplies from Wal-mart but any craft store will work. I would use something a bit larger than 7mm for the center of the bead if you can find it to make it easier to slide the cord through or gut the cord.
Thank you for your video. I did mine today and came up pretty good. He doesn't like it tho, lol.
herno1, you are most welcome. He will eventually tolerate it and even like it. Moses has learned that when I pull out the leash he gets to run around. I also like it to take him outside to poop. He scratched on his glass when he needs to poop so that I can take him out.
Super helpful, Thank you! 😊😄
I am so very glad it was helpful!
This is brilliant, thank you!
You are quite welcome, Marie!!
Would it work with a leopard gecko? They’re smaller than a bearded dragon but could I just make a smaller version?
I don't have much experience with geckos but if I had one I would make this harness for it. The only thing I have found it doesn't work on is my blue tongue skink because she just slides right out of it.
Thanks for teaching us how to make one so we do not need to spend 30$ for one
Right?! That was why I learned how to make them myself! And I like this one way more than any I found to buy.
Omg thank u for doing that video my iguana almost ran a way twice
You are so very welcome! I tell everyone that my Moses doesn't walk on the leash. The leash is so that I don't lose him. :)
I would have to make it smaller for my 6 month old right?
It is a one size fits all as far as the design. You may could use a smaller cord for the time being.
Simple , & cute ! Thank you
Thank you! 😊
How did you get your beads through the Paracord doubled like that? I'm having a really hard time with it.
Yes I thought I was the only one
I can't get mine thru either. Must have different cord or beads is what I am going with...back to shopping!
Tara you have to take the white cord in the inside out and use the color one you want
Any ideas on how to make the ends cute with beads?
Actually yes. Lol. I made one where I ran enough beads to be the width of my hand on the end of one side then I ran the other string through the other end. I then tried a knot at the end of the strings. Does this make sense?
It makes a handle.
I’m gonna use letter beads to spell out my beardie’s name, it doesn’t have to be on the ends but it sure is cute 😅😁
Will you be using it to fly your bird or walk your bird? I think I have it figured out to walk it.
Bought 3 different types of paracord and every time I put the beads on it messed up the paracord now I have all this destroyed paracord and no leash!
I will say, that you can take the guts out of the paracord and make the leash flat. Lizards aren't going to put enough tension on it to actually need the cushion. I also ended up buying 5mm pony beads which were wooden.
How long is the parasite? I have a 550 18ft and even when it’s doubled up it’s a lot longer than what is in this video.
That is the size that I have for my regular leash. This one is short for the example.
What type of paracord did you use 550 or 325?
Am I just dumb or what?!
I guessed about how long she cut the cord, then am having a heck of a time trying to get the pony bead through double cord!!
Its awesome but man it was hard making two cords fit through a tight spot... Video on how u did that part cuz it was easy lol
I hate that I used a thin piece of Paracord for the video. It was unintentionally deceptive. I burned the ends and pushed them through a pen.
What size paracord and beads
Thank you!! Did you really use 18 feet of paracord. LOL???
@@judyjohnson400 yes, because after you double it and turn 6 inches of it into a harness you will only have an 8.5 foot lead. I will often tether Moses to something outside and let him graze and sun bake. That gives him 8.5 feet to move around. :)
Great Idea! @@pamkidd2577
Can this work on a bird?😅
It should work on a bird. The way it's made should be safe and restrain the bird at the same time.
@@pamkidd2577 Ok thank you so, so much. Ive been searching for what seems like forever for an inexpensive way to travel with my lil birbs without them getting away ya know? thank u so much for the confrimation!!!💛💕💛💕💛
@@KawaiiMirasaki you are more than welcome! I'd love to see pictures.
@@pamkidd2577 Thanks! uwu ill be sure to take some pictures! owo💛💕💛
idk how the frig you got this to work, i bought 550 paracord and normal pony beads and no amount of pulling pushing cursing and cussing was ever going to make those pony beads go on that paracord.
I can’t get the beads onto the paracord 😭
Some suggestions are to burn the ends of the parachord, use wooden beads or any beads with a larger center or strip the stuffing out of the parachord. I had to burn the ends of the cord and use wooden beads with another leash that I made. If I remember correctly I was able to get the beads at Wal-mart.
Pam Kidd I think I may just need thinner paracord
@@House_Of_Brine, that is also an option. Paracord is strong so it doesn't have to be terribly thick. What I used in the video was a thinner paracord.
Pam Kidd Yeah my beardie is still really small. I can start with something pretty thin
Absolutely! How old is your beardie?
Reptile? Birds are reptiles?
I haven't made it for a bird but I believe that it could work. Let me know if it does.
What size paracord is this please? 2 or 4mm?
Donna, I used a 550 which is 4 mm. I think that is an average size paracord.
Pam Kidd thanks heaps, have purchased some and some pony beads and some colourful alphabet beads so I can put my girls names on them 🙂
Thanks for such an easy well explained video tutorial
Donna Wilson, I love the alphabet beads idea! I may have to get some and spell out Moses' name on his leash.
Does anyone think this would work on a blue tongue?? Lol
I dont see why not
I made one and it worked great I thought it would not bc of the their short legs but not a problem
That’s what I’m watching for
Julianna, how did it go with using this on your blue tongue? Mine slips right through.
18 FOOT???
That was the length of the bundle I bought. I suppose it doesn't matter the length as long as you keep in mind you will be doubling it over itself.
Omg thank you so much this is great!!
I have referred people to this video many times.
Thank you so much!!! You are awesome!!
Thanks good video
You are so very welcome. Thank you for watching!
First to make the vid 300 more likes than dislikes.
ahh cool idea, but im sitting her watching thinking, keep those beads away he might eat them.
@@pamkidd2577 I was talking about the ones on the table loose next to him, not the ones on the leash.
nice
Sweet so cute
So complicated on how to get it on them. Didn’t explain well
