  • Today we will explore 3 different crystal types; flat, single dome and double dome. We will show and explain the geometry of each, and how they change the look of your watch.
    Is one better than the other? Is a Double Dome better than a Single Dome? We will answer these questions today.

    I think I like single dome crystals the best. The crystal is just another equally important piece to a watch, and so I like to see its influence.

    very good explenation, the only thing that's missing is how the light is reflected in the two types of domed crystals, as you get different reflection images with them.

    Kudos. I like your channel and your store. You try to give people what they want, which is a bit like reading the stocks. However you are good at it. I like that you offer components to people who want to do their own mod. work, or offer products that you've modified yourself.( Love that Orient ) I'll be ordering an Orient, strap, and a sapphire crystal in a few days. I've been an employee for various companies over the last forty years. It's nice to see you tell the " big guy" thanks, but no thanks, I don't need to depend on you now, good day.
    Your work ethic is good. You're prompt with your customers, try to give them an idea of what is the best for their money through your YT channel. A truly difficult task requiring extensive knowledge of your products. You also are courteous. An important but often disregarded part of a transaction. The phrase " A pleasure doing business with you " fits here nicely.

    I believe there's another difference : if you've got a single dome and a double dôme with blue AR and you look at the watch at certain angle on single dôme you can clearly see a flash of the blue AR while on the double dome the AR coloring won't be seen as much.
    Let me know what you think about this.

    Great video! I wonder what the reflective properties are between these, I've heard flat has too much reflection, which a dome addresses. Does that mean the distortion people love in Omega Speedmaster acrylic crystal is more from the shape than the material???

      The inner dome is concave with the same radius of curvature, cancelling out nearly all the front surface magnification.

    • @AZ-if2mj
      @AZ-if2mj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your understanding from college was correct, the DD crystal is a meniscus: convex top, concave bottom. If convex on both sides (biconvex) then it would magnify about twice as fast than the single dome (plano convex). Meniscus lenses are often used for aberration correction from the difference between the side 1 and side 2 radii.

    Re: AR coating. I see a clear AR option and a blue AR option. Are these comparable in quality and function? Would there be any visible difference on a double dome sapphire crystal, as I understand the blue flash does not occur on a double dome? On a flat sapphire crystal, I assume that there would be a flash from the blue, but not from the clear. Optics fascinate and confuse me. Thank you for splaining how a double dome crystal works optically.

  • @blntwzrd
    @blntwzrd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Curious as to if there are any changes in the sound of the watch with the removal of some of the sapphire crystal. I hear guitar players talk about tonewoods and am concerned that a single dome crystal may tick too loudly for my tastes...but not sure if the removed material would give the sound more space to amplify? Love your watches by the way :)

    Do you know if what sapphire crystal thickness is associated with a certain water resistance? That is what pressures can a 0.8mm, 1.0mm or a 2.0mm hold back before it gives. I'll assume that a dome or double dome will make it stronger, but by how much?
