Rebuilding an Abandoned E30 that Hasn't Run in DECADES!

- I found this 1984 BMW 318 that hasn't been on the road in ages. It's been sitting, rotting away, and neglected. Now, I'm rebuilding, restoring, and refinishing this to it's former glory. PLUS rebuilding a bigger, better engine to go into it for much much more power!

Once you get them situated, you gotta get all of them together for a family photo! E30, both Porsche turbos, E36, The Big Boy Truck, and the electric scooter
Maybe if they all ran lol
Extensions and deep sockets together can alter torque settings. There is a chart online with the percentage. Hard to snap ARP bolts though but not reusing the old ones was the way to go anyways.
Exactly what I was thinking. I did QA on submarines and we would yell at people all the time for using deep wells and extensions.
Good points thank you!
Euro-bumpers pronto !
I know this might be off topic but judging from the over grown weeds and trees you had to fight around for the trunk access I'd personally enjoy watching some property clean up, might help you moving around cars in the driveway and also give your property some more curb appeal in the process(I know I know big ask for a guy not having to do the work lol). Just a thought! Glad to see BMW content back in the rotation.
YES! Glad to see Bavarian Matt back! All your videos are awesome, but the E36 build is what got me hooked and glad to see this start and the E92 hopefully coming with future Matt.
Bunch of BMWs on here now!
Matt, with the engine crane hack, you have to wait a moment after you’ve pulled the jib up before you tighten the valve. It gives the fluid time to move. Then it won’t drop down when you let go.
Keep up the great work! 💪
Matt, I never comment on anyone’s videos, but you deserve it. It’s good to see you’re back on the E30, and you are by far one of my favourite TH-camrs. I really hope you make it big like so many others have. Much love from the UK.
Best channel on TH-cam. So damn varied and fantastic production. Should be 1mil+ subs….keep grinding man.
Glad to se you're fixing up the e30. Nice choice on engine, fun task ahead. Done and doing this all the time. Great channel.
I’m into this build. As a teenager in the 90’s a friend had a 1987 325i, lots of fun with that car. My 1992 Eclipse GS could out handle it, straight line speed was the same!
I have been seeing the e30 in the background of the videos since the 996 and I was hoping that you are going to do something about it finally
Yup finally!
I'm pretty baffled by that head stud breaking. How is it possible that it broke AND yet the stud was so loose you were able to back the bolt out with pliers? That is really bizarre.
The studs don't really get tightened into the block thankfully.
The stud doesn't get torqued down
It must be so nice being able to buy a classic car out there and find like zero rust on it. Same car same age in the UK and you would be able to see the road through the floor pan in multiple places and the sills will literally fall off if you look at them wrong 😂
These are getting rare. That being said everything on that car is so expensive now. So restoring it is not going to be feasible. I applaud you for doing this.
Another fantastic video Matt! We were all wondering when this project would get some spotlight!
Awesome BMW content, Matt!
Great editing with demonstrating the hard work you put into it!
Some really impressive wrenching! Well done! :)
Looking forward to more!
God! My heart stopped when that bolt snapped!!! Holy moly you were so lucky!!!!
Good choice. I've owned a 86 325e I installed a Conforti performance chip and a limited slip differential from a 86 635CSi. Also owned two 88s a 325e and 325i convertible, 89 325ix, and a 91 325i convertible. Additionally a 96 M3, 95 525i manual with performance chip, a couple 740iL, and a couple Z3 2.8 manuals.
This is my third E30. All 318s.
@@matt13ross Most my e30/e36 cars have been six cylinders though had a very clean 1980 320i. Wish I never sold it, but got a good deal trading for some cash and a 1990 Mercedes 300CE (two door)
@@matt13ross I assume you plan and doing a 5 lug wheel conversion and brake upgrade.
FYI, a little tig welding would repair that head and having it resurfaced after. It would not be a scrap head. (For future reference)
I would try and clean out those oil passages in the block pretty well, and chase the head bolts with a tap to clean it. I am probably 90% sure you have debris in the head stud passages...
Cool project! Always liked those Beemers!
Matt, you need a big shop! It is a pain to see that you have to move everything around to get to things. I am on the same boat of needing a big shop.
I know. Just no space!
Great work, Matt. Jealous of your cars, the 997 especially.
ive been looking forward to this build for a few years now!
All hail the torque wrench! Bet you didn't forget the license plate or recieve any complaints about your truck's wheels this video (never mind the broken stud).
Excited for another build!
When that stud snapped, I thought oh shit. He is going to have to start over. I can’t believe you got that broken stud out. WOW! 😳
Can't wait for the next one!
Ohh this is going to be a fun project! An engine with this much power in a car that old will be mental!
Matt Ross I absolutely love your content keep up the great work Bud
ARP head stud washers need the bottom of the washer to be sanded to prevent spinning. When the washer permits the nut to spin it throws off he torque. When you call ARP they’ll tell you this but they’re not smart enough to include instructions to tell you to sand the bottom side of the washers.
the bolt breaking on install was best case scenario for sure. Definitely something not right about the bolt
This is gunna be an awesome series👌🏼👌🏼
Very excited for this one! Right up my alley
Great video Matt💪💪
Was stationed in Germany had a 323 swapped with a bigger inline 6 that thing was fun
i was not expecting this, so excited to see this build.
Great job Matt👏🏻
Never disappointed watching your channel!!! Keep grinding.
That is one clean E30
E30 conversion to M3 and yes install and the big turbo 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻yes yes yes yes
Oh boy, Quinn Clark's channel is a true treasure trove of essential info to properly build these engines and e36's in general! @m3nace really worth the check!
Yo Ross love vids man, can’t wait for people to discover this channel and make it a main line channel. Keep up the good work man
Hopefully soon. Thank you!
Holy S##t! Now, that is gonna be a sick build. I cannot wait to see what you do with it. Man, you always come thru with good stuff. I am cancelling Netflix and just watching Matt Ross, haha! Good luck man, make it sick!
Ahahaha that's great thank you!
Do a landscaping vid. Give your property some love so you can store your cars outside better....
I think ARP QC isn’t what it used to be. Had the exact same thing happen when doing my M50, snapped one and two others stretched beyond spec. They were brand new and ARP sent me replacements, but it still sucked. It snapped low on mine so we had pull the head and start over
I love the channel! Im really gonna enjoy this build. Something different and I love that body style.
Glad you enjoy it!
High-tensile fasteners can suffer from hydrogen embrittlement, depending how they were stored maybe this was a factor in that one snapping.
Excited for this
I bloody love the e30. Do an m3 body and wing 🤤
Glad to see the e30 back.
That m50 and m20 engines are B-proof.
Stock u can redline them the whole weekend. And on Monday drive it to work with no issues.
(Just change the oil and oil filter)
Miss my old BMW's... 😢
Thank You!
Evo sport kit. BBS. Shark or Miami blue 👌
Matt Ross with another BMW
Great project. Just change the bumpers to euro spec. They look much better.
I'm actually in the middle of reinstalling the head on my S52 but accidentally installed the cams with the engine at TDC. Broke an expensive supertech valve and possibly a spring 🤦♂️
I almost made the same mistake! Took me a bit to figure out how to get all the pistons down.
14:19 When a righty tighty becomes a righty loosey
Just means more work
Ah, nice “this is not good” moment! You have 9 lives and have used 10 of them. 😆
You are overlapping with another builder I love, StanceWorks! Not a BMW fan, but I do respect them.
Now, this is the way to start a project.
Thank God this is a giveaway car. I’ve been wanting one of these forever. 😉😅
Lol I don't do that!
@@matt13ross haha figured it was worth a shot. Super pumped to see this series though!
Finally dude!
You should apply some liquid gasket where the block meets the front crank case cover
I put some there
Fk yeah! This might motivate me to work on my e30 that’s been sitting for years
Go start wrenching!
My e30 has a supercharged S50 and is a handful! It’s probably quicker than my 4.0 996….except it can’t get traction 😂
That's a sweet setup!
Those wheels will look awesome on the 997 🎉
Which ones??
Oh shiish was just ur old Apex wheels and some new Falken tyres 😮
Yes lol
But still, black and grey might work nice!
What’s with BMW & plastic engine parts?…Love the vlog…Congrats…
Hell yeah
Kinda hard to tell in the video, but did you use the ARP assembly lube on the threads? ARP calls for only their assembly lube on the threads. Engine oil or assembly lube dosent work well. I've installed ARP bolts many times with no issus
Finally!!!!!😊
Finally!
Glad to see you have moved on from the Porsches for a while.
Still working on them too.
@@matt13ross boring
I’m gonna need lots of 80’s vibe tracks on this project… just sayin 👍
sweet
Modern BMWs like your other one are junk, but I'm definitely looking forward to this build. That's a nice clean slate you've got to work with. What would I do? Glad you asked.
No need to go crazy with the motor. 400ish is plenty, and keep it reliable. A super clean wiring job and engine bay would be choice, but no "jewelry" please. Keep the interior pretty original, but you should try to add a light roll bar for safety and to stiffen the chassis for all that additional power. Keep the body mods to bumpers, a front air dam, maybe some subtle side skirts. Absolutely no wing. Roll the fenders if you can do so without damaging the original paint. Otherwise, maybe some understated flares since you're going to need a little wider rubber. Full suspension upgrade and call it done!
Good points. Probably something similar to that.
This is so much fresh and better content than the porshe build ups...
Great build! but S50? looks more like a S52? The S50 has ITB's right?
The American S50 is a 3.0 and the S52 a 3.2. Euros have the ITBs.
Swap Porsche flat 6 in E30 😀
Haha. Too expensive!
U forgot to use assembly lube.
finally
BMW barley alive only Mr Ross as the technology to rebuild it 👍
Did you chack that the block
Serface is flat ?
Flat enough
I guess this is the new car huh 😂
😮😅😅😂😂👍🔥🙌 dude this one came out of “left field 😂😂😂🙌🏆🔥👏
That's right! Lol
Great content 👍👍👍 but it’s not a GT3 ???😁👍👍🙏🇬🇧
Ahaha little cheaper than a GT3!
Came for the Porsche's, guess I'll stay for the BMW's lol
Good haha
do you not need to torque down the head stud?
Just hand tight
@@matt13ross actually?
Yes that's their instructions
@@matt13ross well you learn something new everyday. I am very excited about this project!
🔥💪🏾🤙🏾
U inspired me to seek a build project bmw m3 E46 or e92? If u know of any vehicles around please let me know. Delaware bound. Thanks
Go for an E46!
what pistons your block has
Weisco
Great new project... Anything but them stupid truck wheels 😂
🔩🔩🔩🔩🔩👍🏻
Umm that e30 will be way too tail happy, better look into suspension and brakes as well as a roll cage.. E30s dont behave well in a roll over..
You did two Porsches...now do two BMWs. This E30 and get that gorgeous M3 rebuilt
Some studs dont need grease
75 ft/pd? That's a little too much?
75 with cutting rings?
ARP calls for 75 ft lbs.
Hey Matt, a new video and a “New” to us car! As always love the videos and the work you put into them for us! Have a great weekend!
