    Thats why IELTS is a money maker machine and not a test to show if you can speak English.

      I work for IELTS... Please tell me why you think it's a money making machine. British people just assume they'll pass the test as they are British and English is their native language. Listen to what the presenter said...they don't paraphrase the question or use any interesting language.

    I think most of them would have been able to get an even higher mark, the problem is that you didn't tell them it was a test(or at least it wasn't shown in the video).Context makes the difference.
    I(and I'm sure most people)don't speak in a casual conversation the same way I speak in a job interview.If someone told me they were assessing my English I would give longer answers and compelling arguments instead of just saying "Yeah".

      Agree

    • @KealEzlo
      @KealEzlo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think average, educated native speakers in everyday context would be more casual and don't really pay much attention on their "correctness", so I kind of expect they land somewhere around 7, which match IELTS description of "you are in command of the language, albeit some inaccuracies and misunderstandings".
      Scoring 8 and above mean you must organise your thoughts (fluency), pay attention to what you said (vocab / grammar), and pronounce properly (pronunciation). This is simply a taxing exercise in everyday situation. Most people would just slip mistakes here and there as long as it doesn't compromise communication. At worst case they can just clarify.
      Also just adding, native mistakes are the engine of language evolution. If everybody speaks perfectly, we all should be speaking in old english now.

  • @flaze3
    @flaze3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    I think this video highlights a problem with all language exams: namely that they assume unfair standards of correctness as regards word choice. The lady said "I came via a car", but it's not "wrong" to say that - it's just unstandard.
    When native speakers themselves "can't get it right", then perhaps the standards of "rightness" need reexamining. I would argue that language exams should focus on comprehensibility and not be so finicky about what constitutes rightness.

      C'mon man, "via a car" is straight up grammatically wrong. Get out of here with this non-standard BS. Nobody says "via a car". Native speakers can also make mistakes once in a while, especially with less common words such as "via".

    i got a 7 in speaking and im not a native english speaker.Its quite sad these days, IELTS have become standard for NHS in hiring overseas professionals when the rest of its components are not that relevant to a specific job. For instance, why bother and strive hard to get a 7 in writing when youre a nurse and essay writing is not even done in hospitals. i mean, youre not there to write numerous essays on every patient's chart so why NHS is so reluctant in lowering the acceptable scores for foreign professionals.

      I somehow passed my IELTS with minimum effort, but I need to admit the spoken and the written parts were not easy: for the written test, they want you to be able to analyse data which tend to be quite complex for an average person, while the speaking is not evaluated 100% objectively, since you have another person to interact with.
      That said, I had more than 6.5 in every module and the overall score was definitely good.
      I wonder, though, how a perfect examination looks like: how does a person get a Band 9?

    I feel bad for people that actually have to take this test just because you give a short answer doesn't make it incorrect the only way you can really tell how advanced somebody is is by the Precision in their vocabulary Basically how well you can explain and describe a wide variety of things

    • @reiniertl
      @reiniertl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, if you are to be precise then you have to be thorough. You can certainly be accurate with few words, but laconic people are not necessarily good speakers. It is a 15 exam so you talk as much as you can, basically until your examiner interrupts you. The exam is well designed, and if you know English you can succeed just by following the rules, it is not that hard (provided you have enough proficiency). I took the IELTS and got 6.5 in speaking, my examiner was the third person I ever spoke (in English) for more than 10 mins.

      They speak their native language fluently. However, they don’t know how to perform in those kinds of exams. Speaking your native language, doesn’t turn you into a well spoken and eloquent person. In those exams, examiners ask you tricky questions. Questions which you need to think. It is not all about how well you know the language, but how well you communicate in that language. Are you able to be high self-confident? How would you react if I asked something that you can’t related with your knowledge. They don’t test your knowledge, but the language you have learned. At times, I have the feeling you have to know a wide range of topics. If you ask me a question about politics in my native language, I won’t be able to give you an long answer with reasons, examples, pros and cons. You have to be prepare for those oral exams. In the C1 German I had to talk about nuclear atomic energy. I freaked out. I didn’t know how to say. I repeated that part and I passed with a decent score. I had to talk about why parents should help their kids to do their homework. It is a familiar topic which doesn’t require a lot of knowledge to discuss about that issue.

      @@Theyoutuberpolyglot Not true at all in the case of IELTS. Countless IELTS test takers have answered questions with replies that are riddled with speech errors. In addition to their error-riddle answers, they speak with absolutely zero substance. They repeat and rephrase what they’ve previously said and they even add irrelevant filler to pad out the length of their replies.

    I can speak english but not so fluently, i did score between 6.5-8 bands in speaking, but in the writing section i couldn't get a 6 or 6.5 in writing in the UKVI test! I always end up with a 5.5 and it's frustrating

    I like IELTS test, but I don't think it's enough to improve your English. I reckon the essence of Language is having communication. Actually I changed my English studying style from studying just IELTS to having conversations with people, which made me realise my English is not enough at all... (I can save money!😊) I should interact with people in English more and more!!

    Good video. Any language needs knowing of traditional uses of words and sentences as well as idioms. Language is culture not only word and sentences. I wish I can practice during my preparation to TOEFl with native speakers.

    So IELTS demands a really good speech even better than normally native speakers do every day. Obviously they're capable to do it, but it's not like a trivial conversation.

    I have quite a good score in the IELTS speaking test although it was the first time I had studied in a foreign country and I decided to go back to South Korea because I can not sustain my life in Canada ( I really missed my family) My score was 7.0. I was really nervous because I promise with my father to have at least 6.5 overall scores in IELTS test so that I can prove what I have studied about 8 months in Canada. I'm studying TOEFL test again because I have to apply to the army since I'm 19 years old. :( I think IELTS test is very good test because it is a good opportunity to express about your English ability because I can speak with native speaker without any kind of disturbance in my head..

    Funny how the seemingly less educated, more colloquial interviewees were the ones who scored the highest. Those guys just answered the question like a normal person would. The women seemed very conscious of the fact that they were being filmed. Chris was also a bit stilted.
    Btw it’s ‘that the school has’ not ‘have’!

  • @kidrm19
    @kidrm19 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd say some of how well you'll perform depend on the interviewer as well. I'm not a native English speaker and not at all that fond of talking but managed to get an 8.0 on my first try. My interviewer was an Australian woman who was very nice and seems just comfortable to be around with that I was able to speak more confidently and at length, and just had a very good time overall (even with all the mic and camera equipment for UKVI). It was definitely not what I was expecting at a formal speaking exam!

    Let's imagine for a second that I'm not a complete art nerd and wouldn't reply with a massive tangent relating to how I got interested in music and art despite growing up around all sports players with no artists. If a man on the street with a camera walks up to me with the golden art question and I'm like, "Yes, actually." I'm suddenly less than a 9?
    A more accurate video title could have been, "Will the survey answers of Brits pass IELTS speaking?"
    IELTS examinations are specifically designed to emulate how real world conversations flow and to measure how well the interviewee can use the language to express themselves. Walking up to random, unprepared strangers on the street leads interviewees on a more ambiguous line of thinking strictly reserved for conversations where the answer can be a single word. They have every reason to think of it as a survey which doesn't require any context to answers if the question is no more than

    I feel like I can get a 7.5. they said nothing like impressive. The key is to use accurate and varied language. Of course pronunciation is greatly appreciated. If I'd apply the test to some Asians and Arabians then I think most of them would get a 4.0 because they have a so weird accent that never disappears.
