Bad Bill is a gila monster - a poisonous lizard of the American southwest and Mexico. Beans is a desert iguana - and though some lizards freeze up as a defense mechanism, they're not one of them. Priscilla, the kid, is a desert mouse (voiced delightfully by Abigail Breslin. This move unfortunately sort of came and went without much notice, which is a shame because it's not only stunning animation on the animal details, but is just a surprisingly good movie.
I am pretty sure Bill is a Mexican beaded lizard, they are similar in texture and size and are also venomous, but gila monsters have an orange and black pattern.
It's badass knowing the encounter between Rango and Rattlesnake Jake is just a reunion between Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones. Also, the sound design on Rattlesnake Jake is just so satisfying.
The overall design of Jake is just incredible. From the gatling gun tail to eye color, along from the size. The way he's less anthropomorphized than the rest of the cast. He truly represent the wild in "Wild West." His introduction scene is also amazing, what a way to make a villain intimidating !
@Cadinho93.... Bill Nighy always plays such great, evil characters in movies.... Davy Jones in the "Pirates" movies, Viktor in "Underworld", etcetera. Also, the voice of "The Spirit of the West" Cowboy was by Timothy Olyphant, who played a U.S. Marshall in the great TV series "Justified".

36:20 "No man can walk out on his own story." I will often go back and watch that scene whenever I'm feeling down. It has always stayed with me. In my opinion, Rango is the greatest animated film ever made.
This movie has such great cinematography because the cinematographer was Roger Deakins who has an insane resume. While it is a cg film his direction of framing and knowledge of what makes a good image elevates so much of this film. Rattle Snake Jake scales are colored on his mouth to give him a mustache which Lee Van Cleef had in most of his filmography. And he has one of the best evil stares in my opinion.
Snakes sometimes really do have scale coloring that looks like a mustache. I knew someone who named their pet boa constrictot Snidely Whiplash because the snake had a "mustache" that looked very much like the cartoon character's 'stache.
The Mayor is clearly based on John Houston from the movie Chinatown. That character also wanted to control water. The metal beak on the hawk might be a reference to the gunfighter Tim Strawn in the movie Cat Ballou. He got his nose shot off and wears a metal nose. BTW, Rango won the Oscar for best animated feature in 2011. It beat Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots.
0:59 Simone nailed it, honestly. And personally I've grown very tired of the smooth, bubbly look of most 3D animated movies. So happy that this exists to show what's possible when someone has a distinct vision instead of just aping Pixar. Again.

@@RyoHazuki224I think the distinctive style of Pixar was due to technical limitations of computers at that time and it kinda stuck. All the new styles of recent times have only come from technology being able to achieve it. Of course this doesn't apply to traditional animation

The weird designs, highly textured detail, realistic and harsh lighting, surrealism and tension between realism and cartoon logic, contrast in characters and tropes… it all oozes passion. "Anthropomorphism." Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) [Comedy/Adventure] is a must-watch for this channel. The Man with No Name was voiced by Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood/Justified) and is a much better Spirit of the West than Clint Eastwood, in my opinion. If you look at images of Lee Van Cleef's character "Angel eyes" from the Dollars trilogy, you'll definitely see the resemblance in Jake. Its part of why Jake is so iconic and one of my favorite antagonists in fiction. He's the Hannibal Lecter of this movie, barely any screen time yet he's always bursting with presence
Rango is basically a love child of Hunter S. Thompson’s acid-fueled storytelling combined with all the classic Western tropes of the ‘50s and Spaghetti Western tropes of the ‘60s.
I love the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas cameo, it’s so quick that you could easily miss it. I’ve read all the Hunter Thompson books, I love them. You could also call this movie, uncanny, because I think that’s where the feeling is coming from watching these animals move and talk, maybe, I don’t know. It is definitely unique but it’s a great movie.
That "boar" creature that was pulling the cart was a Javelina (pronounced Have-a-leena). It's also known as a peccary. Though it looks like one, it's actually not a pig. On average, they reach about 40 pounds but can grow to be 80 pounds, depending on genetics and diet. They travel in packs, but unlike wild pigs, javelinas are only considered a threat to people when they feel threatened and cornered.
@gergopiroska5749 correct. I was making the comment because it helps explain why the animal doesn't look that much larger than the other animals since an actual pig would be more like an elephant than a horse to these characters.
8:30 that little pig pulling the cart is a type of peccary called a javelina in the Sonoran desert. There about as common as deer, have a distinct musky smell, and they’ll get into your garbage if you leave it out which is why most people in Tucson have strict rules about putting garbage on the curb
If you guys don't know how Lee van Cleef looks you REALLY need to watch The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Or the Sabata movies if you want to see him as protagonist.
Bad Bill is supposed to be a Gila Monster, the only venomous lizard native to North America. It's ironic that he's voiced by Ray Winstone, a British actor
Probably one of the coolest behind the scenes facts is that the director got all the actors in a giant sound stage and act out all their scenes (I think) as a reference for the animators, in full costume and everything. The Cinematography of this movie is something else . And I love the fact the fact that the spirit of the west is Clint Eastwood . A true masterpiece of a movie but very underrated

Hello Simone & George!😊 "The Man with No Name" is the voice of Timothy Olyphant (Cobb Vanth). Nice reactions to this very unusual animated tale, Guys!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
As someone who's a lover of westerns i can say that rattle snake jake definitely has the vibe and stare of van cleef down 😭😭 btw as another comment already mentioned you guys should check out the dollars trilogy to get some of the references in this movie.
This is an instant classic. So many tropes, so many amazing jokes, so much goes on in a not super long runtime. Western, heroes journey, environmental message, and many epiphanies to top it off. Such a dense movie, and so very well done.
I love how the size discrepancies between the different animals are completely thrown out the window for the most part and the movie still works. The lighting is sublime (Roger Deakins absolutely nailing the cinematography), the detail level is incredible and I really love the art style as a whole. The full voice cast for this film is wild, star after star. And don't worry Simone, there's definitely some Geoffrey Rush-esque mannerisms in the mole Balthazar! And yeah "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is a must-see film.
the production of this movie added to it's special feeling. Instead of voice actors sitting in a booth, the actors all acted the movie out together in functional sets (basic tables and such). This added to the character interactions and gave movement references or ideas for the animators.
I really love the character designs in this movie, they did such a good job staying true to each animals anatomy while still anthropomorphising them in a way that didn't feel wrong. The lizard that entered the bar before the showdown is supposed to be a Gila Monster and Beans i believe is supposed to be a Desert Iguana
I remember, when I was in a theater watching Rango, couple seats further was a man with a child 5 or 6 years old. At the momet Rango arrived to the town, the child started to cry and plead to leave
Such a unique story with such surreal visuals, incredible voice acting recorded whilst on set thus making some real chemistry between actors which most animated movies lack and the beautiful cinematography paired with the lifelike and grungy character design is a great recipe for one of my favourite films ever

The boar is a Javelina, basically just a desert boar. They are more leaner than domestic pigs, so less fatty, obviously still fat however. Pronounced "Hav-ah-lean-ah" or close to that depending on regional pronounciation in the southwest. The birds they ride are Roadrunners if anyone was curious. Little guys are quick and literally sprint everywhere they go. And yes like everyone is commenting, Bad Bill is a Gila Monster, rotund chubby lizards with venomous bites, not life threatening bad but close. I think there's only been a few records of people dying from them, I might be mistaken. Adorable little guys tho, they like to bury themselves and take literal dirtnaps so its pretty scary stepping on one, especially at night. Nothing scarier than hearing a Rattle Snake within striking distance tho, that takes the cake. I still jump whenever I hear rattling under me, and I have not lived in the southwest in some years.
If You Go Back And Watch Closely, The Red Car Rango Lands On Is Driven By One Of His Greatest Parts, Doctor Gonzo From FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS!!
Lee van Cleef also played a master ninja who was teaching a young man to be a ninja vigilante fighting on the side of right...not necessarily the side of the law... all while searching for his daughter. (The Master/1984) Because when I think of ninjas, I think of Lee van Cleef! (You never know who is behind the men-yoroi!) Also, LvC played the antagonist in two of Eastwood's spaghetti westerns... The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (LvC played "The Bad"), and A Few Dollars More. He also had a guest spot on the TV show featuring CE, called Rawhide. And, Simone, I kind of see what you mean with Geoffrey Rush in the skin...
100% on board with others saying you guys gotta check out Fear and Loathing. Also, just for me, The Long Kiss Goodnight! Its so good amd Gina Davis and Samuel L Jackson are so good together.

The voice of 'Clint Eastwood' is Timothy Oliphant. Which is perfectly cast.
Such a great movie. I got the Fievel reference, Simone.
This is SUCH an under appreciated film. More people should see this ridiculous masterpiece!
100% on board with others saying you guys gotta check out Fear and Loathing. Also, just for me, The Long Kiss Goodnight! Its so good amd Gina Davis and Samuel L Jackson are so good together.
Not just you, he fits Geofferry Rush very well
The word George was searching for was "Anthropomorphized." Animals with Human Characteristics.
Bill nigthy playing Rattlesnake jake and johnny playing rango is so funny thinking about pirates of the Caribbean
The bts of that movie looks like so much fun :D
Lee Van Cleef as a snake character is perfection. Lee’s super sharp and chiseled features are custom-made for this interpretation!
BTW Simone, I 100% agree with you. I have always though the grandpa mole looked like Geoffrey Rush as well.
One of those under-rated and under-discussed films that are secret gems. I'm so glad you watched this! The animation is stellar... that scene when Rango first enters the bar, the expressions on all their faces and the poses, the lighting... it's breathtaking work.
this whole movie was recorded in live action too, and than they animated on top of it, tothis day, i wish i could see the live action version of this
That Fear and Loathing reference is so awesome!
The mole creature that Simone thinks is Geoffrey Rush is actually Harry Dean Stanton and was modeled after him.
I always had the same idea as Simone, he does resemble Rush a lot in mimics.
This movie is so under rated. The characters are amazing and the animation and visual style is so good!

It's captain bill nighy
The "don't we" gave it away
Imidiatly saw that tentacle face XD
This reaction showing up now made me laugh so thank you lol
I always watch this when I'm sick (did it once randomly & it became a tradition) and whaddya know I'm sick again haha.
Thank you for your reactions!
It's a hidden gem in my opinion. a movie you're hesitant to admit how good it is
This movie is a love letter to classic western. Even more, it's one of the most unique animated movies.
This is one of my favorite animated films. Rango's speech about the whole town being thirsty while simultaneously drinking a bunch of their water is hilarious.
"I can be a sea captain" captain jack Sparrow, "I can be the greatest lover the world has ever known" Don Juan yeah Johnny Depp has already done all that 😂
The true sequel to Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas!
39:55 The coolest thing about this moment is that it briefly looks like he has a cigar :)
The behind-the-scenes for this film is awesome. Give it a watch!
The big bad that walks into the bar is a Gila monster
i realy love the mensage of this movie, being a hero is a matter of choice, you arent born to be one, you become one by figthing for others
