  • Former Manchester United hero Gordon Hill in conversation with filmmaker John Gubba. Merlin, as he was dubbed following his magical spell with the Red Devils in the Tommy Docherty era, gives a fascinating insight into what it was like playing at Old Trafford in the seventies.
    With Steve Coppell on one wing and Gordon Hill on the other United played scintillating football that won the 1977 FA Cup with victory in the Final at Wembley denying Liverpool the Treble. United looked set to challenge for the League title before The Doc was sensationally sacked for off-the-field activities just two months after winning the FA Cup.
    Now Gordon is based in the USA and he is searching for stars of the future as a soccer schools coach. In this exclusive interview Gordon talks about his past, his present and the future.

    Hill and Coppell were my Utd favourites as an 11 yr old boy in Cork Ireland. Seems like a lovely guy.

    He was one of my favorite players in the 70's; a classic winger with great dribbling skills and a powerful shot ...

    Thank you Gordon for a frank interview.
    What you said about Bestie's 11 shirt, my hero.
    By the way, your semi final goal was one of the greats.

      Wow! what an amazing game and piece of history to have witnessed. Do you have any strong memories of how Duncan Edwards played in that game. Brian, I'm making a documentary and may be looking for some fan contributions. If you have or know anyone who has any unseen footage or stills from that period I'm looking for new material. JG

      Thanks, Yes, i was at the end where united went into a three goal lead.Edwards scored the first,the ball was played across and edwards was on the edge of the penalty area,he hit a left foot thunderbolt past jack kelsey the arsenal keeper.also bobby charlton(unquestionably englands greatest player) played with his socks around his ankles. he scored the second from a brilliant run by scanlon.But edwards was a player that is hard to find words,his demise with some of the others at munich cost england the world cup in 1962.

    There was nothing better than seeing Gordon running down the wing, terrorizing fullbacks, sometimes juggling the ball as he ran. Proper wing play an entertainer. Merlyn the Magician. I am so honored, proud and pleased to have watched him play for United. Thank you Gordon! 👍

    I remember after a game where I stood on a car to get a better view of the players and loads of others did too, I think Martin Buchan complained about it in the pink paper the following week.

    Pity Dave Sexton sold him so early not letting Gordon fulfil his potential as an all time great Utd player. Too swashbuckling for Sexton’s tactical approach.

    OK Gordon we get the memory bit..It was a better team than Law Best etc one. Great to watch & then the Doc decided to play away.. Catastrophe! Sexton ruined it. Waffle waffle cliche waffle waffle cliche.. Gordon tell us some STORIES! Zzzzzzz..

    • @ManUtdTheReligion
      @ManUtdTheReligion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pretty certain Gordon never suggests The Doc’s team was better than Law Best & Charlton. And personally I think he’s one of the most interesting United heroes when he talks about his era. Never dull. Fabulous stories. And I know for sure many many fans agree. JG.
