  • Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which will give Switch owners access to N64 and SEGA games alongside Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Happy Home Paradise DLC, will cost $49.99/year - a $30 increase from the standard membership. Lets discuss.

      Was looking for this comment! yeah it’s crazy omitting the option to test out the service with a 30-day trial. You’re essentially buying into a 12-month wait-and-see. Oh, Nintendo..

    • @JaredConnell
      @JaredConnell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      @@kintypoo121 crazy to omit a free trial? They'd be crazy to include it because 99% of people wouldn't pay for it after the trial. Who would pay $50 when you got to play for 30 days already. That's enough time to beat a few games and try a few more lol.
      I mean if they cared for the customers they might give you a 7 day trial or something but if they cared for the customer they would give you more than a few good games and charge way less than 2.5x the base subscription fee. I guess Nintendo is gonna Nintendo.

      @usernamemonopoly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +176

      @@JaredConnell I don't think you understand the context. MVG said he was going to buy it for a month. Paul is saying you can't buy it for a month and trial it for 30 days, because Nintendo is no longer offering that. You buy in for a year or it's nothing. Nobody is talking about a free trial here.

    • @qactustick
      @qactustick 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Yeah, if I had to guess it's got everything to do with the 'free' DLC that's included. Nintendo doesn't want folks to be able to access that for anything less than the standalone price of $25, hence nothing other than a 12-month option for the Expansion Pack. That way you have to pay either $25 or $30 to access the DLC.

    As Gabe Newell once said - “One thing that we have learned is that piracy is not a pricing issue. It’s a service issue. The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It’s by giving those people a service that’s better than what they’re receiving from the pirates.”
    Except in Nintendo's case, it is a pricing and service issue. And they still can't understand why most would rather download roms and run emulators.

      @@AlmightyElmon It really disheartened me to see all the animal crossing fans getting excited for an update that adds pretty much everything that should've been in the base model of the game from day one, and then getting more excited about having to pay for the first piece of properly new content in the game, and even that is recycled from a spin off title on 3DS that no one played. New Horizons is a good game, but it's an abysmal animal crossing game and an even worse New Leaf successor.

      First off, D.P.O is absolutely right, in this day and age, emulators, or hell, running roms on real hardware is easy AF to do.
      Second, Nintendo Switch Online's pretty flawed in what it wants to achieve. When it comes to this Expansion pack, the only benefits you're getting (that can't be bought with the Basic online pack, so that crosses off the Animal Crossing DLC) is the N64 and Mega Drive games. Meaning, that is the ONLY selling point Nintendo has for it's customers, to convince them to get the expansion, that the "basic users" can't get.
      Possible solutions.
      1) For Expansion pack users, they have better online (voice chat, messaging, etc etc) even though these are features that every online service has in it's BAREBONES of services. Hell, Sony and Microsoft had this covered since 7th Generation.
      2) Every month, they give out games for free, kinda like how PS Plus does. Giving back to the customers, maybe even convincing those customers to actually buy said game after that month's over.
      3) How about some bargains for Expansion pack users? You know, make people "save" money, if they were going to buy lots of extra content for games. (The quotes are there, because ultimately you'll be spending money either way.)
      But really? A couple of games from 20-30 year ago is the best they could do?

    I'm so over subscriptions. These days EVERYTHING wants to nickel and dime you with a monthly charge here, an annual charge here. They lure you in with "small" prices so people will go, "oh, $50 for dozens of games? Great deal!" and ignore the fact that if you own your switch for 7 years, you're gonna be paying $350 for those games, most of which you don't want and won't play.
    Not to mention this system just ensures that in 10, 20 years from now, there won't be a way to play retro games on your Switch because the servers are taken down. I don't know why we can't just go back to the Virtual Console model, so I can one-time-purchase the games I actually want, and years from now when they take the servers offline, I can download them all and keep them as long as I have the console.

With the $20 plan, at least people mutually agreed that while Nintendos Online wasn't fantastic, you got what you paid for and most were fine with it. If the expansion pack didn't have ACNH DLC stapled to it and was like $30-$35, I don't think nearly many people would be as upset because it feels like Animal Crossing was added onto the expansion as an excuse to increase the price. On top of that, what about the people who don't have or aren't interested in Animal Crossing? If they want the N64/Genesis online they're being forced to pay for a DLC they can't use, it's ridiculous.

      I see you're points and disagree. I don't think anybody "mutually" agrees that you are getting what you paid for with the service. They bundled in old NES and SNES games into the service to make it look like it has value, which it still wouldn't have much value. If you bundled in these games at no additional cost it still wouldn't have that much value. I don't think anybody looking to buy access to switch online is buying it for the bundled games that come with it, I'd say they're more looking at it as a bonus.
      Think for a second, what are you actually paying for? Most Switch games are exclusively Peer to Peer, older switch titles at least, Nintendo isn't paying for dedicated servers. If they aren't paying for servers, the point of switch online is what exactly? I'm convinced this is a way to get consumers to pay for their digital storefronts, which is next level manipulation but I have no other way of knowing what this is about other than giving them money for nothing.
      I'm not saying Sony or Microsoft is in the right here, they do the exact same thing with a lot of games. I just believe fully, as someone who has been a PC/Console gamer since they were the age of 5 and now 27, the price you're paying isn't justified. I can get dedicated servers in my games as a PC player right now at no additional costs, why can't console players aside from a companies greed?

In one way, you can't fault Nintendo. They are doing what will make them the most money knowing what they can get away with and getting the most money is the only goal. I hate to be cynical but just a cold fact. Even in this grueling global market, there's money to be had when people are craving for that Nintendo comfort. I find that the texture packs are very good and I have no reason going back to 90s graphics and paying again for the games I already own. I got a 64 Drive years ago when it first came out, but I still prefer emulation and Hi-res texture packs over original hardware. Emulation is all I do for old games now with the exception of my PSOne, Saturn and Dreamcast which will likely change when I build a mini PC for emulation of old systems but now in 4k like with Duckstation.

    A final nail in the coffin would be if the N64 emulation is the same level as the one on Wii U because it had lots of visual bugs, even disregarding the darkening filter. Paper Mario is actually a great way to test how good the emulation is because of all the different effects that just recently became correctly emulated on PC through angrylion and parallel rdp. Ex. Lightning attacks, attract mode, polygon gaps/misplacements etc.
    Edit: And Paper Mario actually had several regressions in the accuracy of its emulation when comparing Wii U to Wii, which says a lot. There were also improvements, I believe. Stating this just so I seem less biased.

    The sad thing is I have a feeling the n64 classic edition console took a back seat for this service. Albeit, scalpers would swarm on that like no tomorrow anyway. I’d love to have these games in my cabinet for the long haul. I’ll be passing down those classic consoles in my family so my nieces and nephews can experience where video games came from.

      Ehhh, I think the N64 classic wasn't something that was gonna be feasible price-wise. It's a well known fact that N64 is very difficult to emulate properly, hell even retro handhelds are just barely able to emulate the simpler N64 games (i.e. Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 etc) and those cost around $80 USD and up. It would've taken a device w/ some serious oomph to be able to properly emulate the N64, and I have no doubts that most people would not have been okay w/ shelling out $150+ for a mini N64 (although who knows, maybe I'm wrong). Not to mention the profit margins are gonna be much, much higher this way compared to the N64 mini. Not saying I agree w/ Nintendo on this one, just that unless Nintendo writes a seriously optimized N64 emulator that runs well on cheap hardware there's no way the N64 mini would've been priced decently.

    This is outright extortion on their part. They have such a paltry amount of games on their new emulation services at the moment, along with a DLC (which you can still buy and keep your data for outright for a one-time price) for a game not everyone has, yet they feel as it stands currently this is justification for them to jack the price of their online service up to more than twice the original cost.
    But yes Nintendo, please continue to wonder why everyone prefers to pirate your older and unavailable games. I'm sticking with my retro game emulators on my computer and not paying a single cent more than the base service...which we shouldn't even have to pay for in the first place, we didn't with the DS family of consoles, or any other proto-connection services we had in the past. Satoru Iwata himself once said this:
    "I don't think its reasonable to make someone pay for a game and then make them prepare a network connection and charge a monthly fee."
    I swear, everything that was good with Nintendo died along with Satoru Iwata.

After all, Nintendo of America is pretty much a glorified translation service for them and have little to no say in what the main offices in Japan do. You only need to buy a couple games before you've already payed more than your would have for the base Steam Deck model. I've probably already spent well over $1000 on my Switch games. The Steam Deck is cheaper because the games actually DO go down in value. Mario Kart 8 still costs 60 fucking dollars in 2021. • @OMGg4m3r

    The way I see it though is the yearly price is only 2.5x the price of a virtual console title on wii u and for that you get 20+ games. You're also not forced to buy it in any way so its not like when UK Disney + added Star and forced all prices to increase. Also, if you only want the Animal Crossing DLC it makes more sense to only buy that as then you only pay for what you want and you have it forever.

    This is why I'm a PC gamer almost exclusively bar my old consoles, which are modded. Console players are paying for nothing, whether a game has dedicated servers for online play is always up in the air, especially for Nintendo, which has a garbage service anyways... To call the online gaming experience on consoles mediocre is a compliment, to imply mediocrity would imply a working service.... Which they don't have.
    The biggest point of contention with these N64 games here is the addition of online play.... Well bucko's, buckle your seatbelts! Emulators have netplay. You can literally get the same functionality with a few friends, download emulators and have the time of your lives if that so tickles your fancy.
    These companies have no way of preventing consumers from seeing how empty their online services really are and how consumers know the dedicated server bullocks was a lie from the get-go. If PC can have dedicated servers with no charges, then in what world does what Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo say have any merit? Be real for a minute, you're paying for the cost of their storefront to sell digital games. Nothing more, nothing less.
