I agree. I think being over-rated is a factor that exists. But like most terms it is not utilized soberly but is belligerently tossed about in order to suit a particular agenda. Not unlike the use of the word Genius. Certainly a valid descriptive term, but when it gets used in reference to someone like Yoko Ono or Marvin Hamlisch, then we enter into decidedly unstable territory. But in my opinion there are artists that demonstrably do not merit their fame and success, in that a cogent argument could be made that their status in the culture is not commensurate with their artistic output.

i’m very confused by your king crimson pick, in terms of prog they are probably the most acclaimed band other than pink floyd or maybe yes, their first album is often cited with creating the genre. About half of these picks on this list really aren’t underrated in all honestly
Over-all, from a pop standpoint, I still think they’re under-rated. Within the prog world, definitely not. But the prog world is still kinda small. Anyhoo, happy spinning!

Most underrated bands: The Refreshments. King’s X. Michael Penn. The Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies. Pride and Glory.
