    I love it....100 billion dollars for HS2 (200km) in "easy" environments.. 29 billion dollars for 550 km, deep in the highest mountains in the world. Grand Paris Exp 45 billion dollars for 200 km of tunnels.
    The difference is the lobbying including that of ecologists.

    The Grand Paris Express (GPE) it is 200 km LINE km (400 km TRACK km), 72 stations. Up to 20 tunnel boring machines (Tunneliers) are working simultaneously to dig the total 200 km of underground tunnels. The GPE trains (183 ordered to-date) run at 110 km/h and are driverless. IMO the GPE is WAY bigger than Crossrail now revised to 36 billion Euros while Crossrail is estimated 20 billion Pounds

    The fact that everyone only cares about the costs associated with these plans and not the plans themselves is exactly why Americans have no high speed rail. If you wait for profitable rail, it will never come.

    Glad to see Paris in this video :)
    Here's some more info : actually, 100% of this project is outside Paris itself. They want to connect suburbs together because there's currently no heavy rail fast public transit option to connect them without commuting to the center. It's basically doubling the length of our current network and is considered the project of the century for public transit.

      There are far more expensive projects in the world than the ones mentioned but in countries that get no attention, at least not when it's infrastructure.
      In any case, you cannot expect logic when a video talks about "Most Expensive Railway Projects" in general with no regards to the cost per km and the duration of the projects., which is what's important.Comparing a project like HSR in Spain that has 4000km built over a period of 30 years with a very low cost of 70B$ with something like HS2 or CAHSR that eachcosts more than the entire Spanish network for a much shorter rout and, in fact HS2 vs CAHSR, with a similar projected cost, when the CAHSR is far longer is absurd.
      The same goes for the Grand Paris Express, that includes 200km and dozens of stations to a short NYC subway line with 3 stations.
      As for the Ontario Line, since the costs on the video are in USD it is "only" 12.5B-14B, but the cost per km (of almost 900M) is definitely at the top.

    • @EmperorMars
      @EmperorMars ปีที่แล้ว

      Really unfortunate that that budget is being reported everywhere, the actual expected capital expenditure for the line is ~$10-11 billion, with the awarded contracts also including 30 years of operations and maintenance to get up to the 19 billion that you mention in your comment. I just looked now and basically no news articles mention this, and says stuff like "cost increased by 70%" when that isn't the case at all.

    7:23 Do you really think Boris Johnson announced that project the same year construction began? Wasn’t it closer to 2009 ?
    16:44 The “Amur”-Line you’re map is showing is the current Transsiberian, open since 1930, the Baykal-Amur Line is further north…btw; high speed is doubling the ancient line, step by step from Moscow.

    You missed Seattle's light rail system, which will not be operational for another 15 years (at minimum). It is currently projected to cost 142 billion dollars, but that does not take into account further cost over runs. This for a system that is projected to carry less than 2% of Seattle's commuter traffic. At over 500 million for each mile of track, it is not a very popular idea. Fort me, it will be nice to ride a train from my home in Everett, WA all the way to the major airport of Sea-Tac (42 miles) without changing trains and will do so in about 65 minutes. If you travel in off peak times in a car, it takes less time than the train. HOWEVER, with traffic so bad in Seattle, during peak morning and evening times, that would be pretty good. Still incredibly expensive and only the ultra high speed trains in Japan and the bullet trains in the rest of Asian cost more.

    I just wish that they would drop all of the nonsense and just get on with building the high speed Irish Sea rail tunnel from Holyhead to Dublin as a real alternative to flying and air travel, if the U.K. and the EU were really serious about this, as the plan has been shelved so many times, where shipping and ferries rapidly fill to capacity at both Liverpool Birkenhead, Holyhead and Dublin alike, where Dublin Port has been expanded to take cruise ships, where ferries don’t even go all the way into Dublin when the River Liffey is at high tide - all of the existing rail lines around Dublin Port is only for freight, not passenger trains and despite the M50 Port Tunnel for cars and trucks, there is still no rail or even LUAS tram connection from the Irish Ferries/Stena Terminals into Dublin City Centre - the nearest train station is Dublin Docklands but even it has no rail connection to Irish Ferries passenger terminal and the LUAS trams only go as far as the Gibson Hotel/02 Arena - the historical ferry connection from Liverpool to Dublin was shelved some years ago and the only one that exists now is a car-only ferry from Birkenhead to Dublin, which the operator P&O ferries is in controversy and may suspend this very soon

    The Highspeed 2 is the most nonsensical bs i've ever heard, due to their psychotically green-centric mindset, their cost ballooned to an extreme degree. With that amount of excessive cost, it can build Thailand's all 4 planned HSR lines not once, but twice. Be green all you want, but be realistic about it. I doubt that project will be finished, especially with how far the UK economy has fallen.
