From the Field -- Freewing F-4D Phantom II 90mm EDF Flight Review (The RC Geek)

- Well, this review has been far too long in the making. I bought this airframe in the second round of the pre-release from Motion RC and liked it so much, I had to refinish it. Well, shortly after starting that, we moved and I almost sold the airplane. I'm so glad that I didn't and that I pushed through to finish the airplane because I love it! I've flown the airplane on 6s and 8s and really enjoy the power and extra flight time you get from 8s (I'm using a JetFan 90 with Neu 1415/1.5y motor, available from jethangar.com). The airplane flew well stock, but I found that it flew even better after the refinish which I think comes from a combination of the smooth surface, the stiffness you get from the polycrylic, and the slightly higher wing loading. As noted in the video I do recommend upgrading the elevator servo to something a little stronger. I'm using an HS-5245 (amzn.to/2QtpgPE) and 4-40 pushrod. Great video Chris!! I used to love seeing phantoms flying, they always remind me of the scene in the Wizard of Oz when the wicked witch is flying and leaving a smoke trail!! Just saying!!

I was born at NAS China Lake I remember the black orange and white phantoms flying in for tests. They even had a pesto bismol pink one they were testing colors to deflect radar. The white one at the main gate was my dad's phantom he was an crew xhief...Airedale for the navy
Very cool! I’ve spent quite a bit of time up there for work, though it’s all f-18s primarily now plus the f35. I did get to see a couple qf-4s on one of my trips, but that’s been a number of years ago now.

Great job Chris. My 6s version is hanging in the shop for the winter, this video makes me want to get her down and fly her again. I have a 8s version still in the box, might swap out motors and esc’s this summer. Still need to get you video of your AB’s in my FMS SU 30 though. Darn wind and time haven’t been cooperating. Soon I hope 🤞

What is this aircraft's top speed? I've been trying to find out and I can't locate the info anywhere for some reason.
Most of us don’t carry an airspeed sensor, so im not surprised you can’t get a definitive answer. With the 8s jet fan setup I’m flying, I’d guess this airplane is doing about 120mph on a good day.
I'm on the fence with this and the F-22 Raptor High Performance 90mm. The wing geometry is different, but the "dm2" are virtually equivalent. I'm curious though, at 2:43 I notice, unless it's a "phantasm" the left flap appears considerably lower than the right?
It’s probably the angle as they’re symmetrical. No roll trim with flaps needed. 😊

Chris, thanks for finally posting this. I'd love to fly it if I could work up to this style of R/C plane. Anyway, as an aeronautical engineer, would you please explain the downward pointing elevators on this plane? It's like on the Harrier. Or perhaps what those combined with the upturned wings does for the plane's flying characteristics? I have always been fascinated by the design of the F-4 but wasn't sure what that did for an interceptor/fighter plane. Thanks.
Typically features like that are a result of stability problems that are discovered during testing where a redesign is out of the question. This is evidenced by the fact that the original concept didn't have these features in it. The downward canted (anhedral) tails would be for a couple reasons. If the dorsal tail was too small for the desired directional stability, you can get a directional stability component by angling the tails up or down to help improve the direction stability of the airplane. The other reason for this would be if there were pitch stability problems at high AoA due to the tail being in the wake of the wing. Angling the tails downward would potentially get a majority of the tails out of the wing wake to ensure you can maintain pitch stability. The interaction between the wing and tails can be huge when tails are mounted higher than the wings. My guess would be that the tails were angled to accomplish primarily the pitch at high AoA improvement as the directional stability improvement is probably relatively small (every little bit does help!). The upturned wing tips would be to add dihedral effect to give the airplane better roll stability. The tips were likely upturned to avoid redesigning the entire structure with more dihedral. Interestingly enough, the downward cant of the tails does introduce a roll instability; further reason for the dihedral wing tips to gain some of that stability back.

I have the f-4 from eflite and i think it flys really good plane makes you feel more confident I dnt know why but it does
The eflite phantom is a great flyer! Both it and this one have very similar flight characteristics in fact. This one on 8s has similar overall performance to the eflite.

Hi love the color I painted my freewing F-86 red and it looks awesome learning a lot from your videos I have the F-4 and I have an ix20 and trying to set the throttle and elevator mix like you did and the flap and elevator I have them but mine say % not mm so not sure if I am doing it correctly any ideas
That’s correct, you adjust the percentage and check the deflection by measuring it.

Doesn’t require anything special. Just need to ensure you have paint coverage around all areas of the nacelles. Though, I’m not sure what you are referencing in relation to nacelles specific to the F-4 which doesn’t have nacelles. Do you mean the inlets?
What color red paint did you choose for this red pumpkin? Candy apple red too dark for the pumpkin, I presume? Thank you, Chris!
I used VHT engine enamel pray paint. The color is Chevy orange red (SP119).
Love to add one to my fleet....but with the FAA threatening our hobby all purchases are on hold!!!
IMO, I wouldn't worry too much about that. It'll be years before any kind of final ruling comes into effect.
How hard is it to land with a dead stick?
Honestly, I never had a dead stick with it. I’d imagine it’ll glide decently though.

Yeah, the site needs to be completely redone. If you’re wanting a 6s jetfan, you might try Gary at effluxrc. I think he can put a system together for you.
Chris - do you fly at the book recommended CG of 190mm or do you use something else?
I found that cg to be a great starting point. I may be a bit further aft from that now, but I haven’t checked it in quite a while.
