John - Thanks for taking the time to produce this video. As a new wood turner, I have had difficulty using the spindle gouge without getting a catch and didn't know why I was getting them. Your video showing the way the tool is angled to the wood with the bevel pointing where you want to go then scooping will help me enormously going forward. Can't wait to practice it in the morning.
Great video on hand sharpening. I have retired and started wood turning about six months ago and have not wanted to purchase a sharpening jig if I can hand do it. Your info was jut what I needed. I went to the shop, tried it and was quite satisfied with the results. Thanks for the video.
Just what I needed the hows and whys. I just bought a Crown Pro-PM detail giuge and all I get is a lot of catches and frustrations. I didn't scoop. I'm giving it a try ronight. Thank's buddy.
I agree with the other viewers here. This offered several "ah ha" moments for me as a newbie. The ice cream analogy was particularly helpful. I'll be trying to implement these concepts today... Thank you!
I have a passionate hate for this chisel as i dont know how to use it properly and just as i have almost finished a replica stair spindle i go to do the coves and it dances all over my hard work . Thanks for the tips fella !
I'm a little confused by the first part of the video, turning downhill on the grain: once the piece rotates 180 degrees, you'll be cutting uphill. Does that mean one side will be smooth and the other jagged, always?
Totally agree with RonRadliff - I am new to Woodturning, amd this is the best tuition I've watched...thanks very much.
Fabulous video. Can't wait to try the skew
Simple the best and simplistic explanation about doing coves. Thank you sir!

The tips you gave to prevent kickback and spiral cuts are extremely helpful. Great camera angle too. Look forward to viewing more videos of yours.
Informative and helpful. It also made me hungry for ice cream.
I think this might be my new "go to" channel to learn about turning. Thanks for the detailed description of what you are doing and what doesn't work.

The best tutorial I had seen!

Thanks John. Another useful video.
thanks for that.
that has really helped me as I didn't know that you could use a parting tool for sizing the cove.

If I could only get 1 spindle gouge would you recommend a 3/8" or 1/2" - thank you
Your explanations made a lot of sense to me....do you have a bead demonstration?.....a subscription?
Love all your videos. Your videos should be given with every new lathe sold. There would be a lot less frustrated turners.
how low is the tool rest? is that typical for a gouge? thx
I shoud add that I started wood turning 2 weeks ago:)
