Tony, Geezer, Bill, & Dio all considered this a new band, & weren’t intending on being called Black Sabbath, because, as you say, it doesn’t sound like Black Sabbath.
But the record deal that Tony had was under the Black Sabbath name, so the record company insisted they use it.
Best to think of it as a different, but also awesome, band.
Worth noting that the different production sound (like the toms) is a lot to do with Producer Martin Birch. Who produced most of Iron Maiden’s classic albums, Deep Purple’s Machinehead, & a host of others. Was probably the biggest producer in rock music at the time

Just for correct credits, Bill Ward did the studio work on this album and it's him you're listening to on this studio recording. Appice came along as the tour drummer after Ward dropped out. He then served as the drummer from that point on. Other drummer's with Sabbath were the late Cozy Powell and Bev Bevin. "Children of the Sea" is worth a listen.

I think Bill Ward left because Dio wanted him to sound like a normal rock drummer. Heaven and hell, in terms of drums, sounds like a lot of other bands, it doesn't sound like Bill Ward. I assume this made Bill Ward not work with Dio.

Love the Ronnie James Dio era, tons of great songs. I would also suggest you check out Dio's previous band called Rainbow. Rainbow was a creation by Ritchie Blackmore (from Deep Purple). Blackmore brought on drummer Cozy Powell for their second album and the trio was such a mix of talent. Highly suggest checking out the song "Stargazer", "Kill the King", "Light in the Black and "Gates of Babylon". Rainbow live concerts were magical, check out their 1977 Munich concert footage with songs like "Mistreated", "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Catch the Rainbow" and "Still I'm Sad" which features a Cozy Powell solo doing the "1812 Overture"

It's Ward on drums. He left the band in mid tour bcs he cudn't be in "Black sabbath" without Ozzy, especially playing Original Sabbath songs with anyone else besides Ozzy singing them, particularly the song Black Sabbath. He cudn't do it he felt like he was betraying Ozzy during that song. He was drinking himself to death at that time. He woke up on the street in an alley one morning while on tour and just went home and then to a detox and began his sobriety that he is still on today, with just a few stumbles along the way early on. I love Ward. I think he's my favorite of the bunch! and Im a singer / bass player.
    Edit:
Ward came back after The Mob Rules to record Born Again with Ian Gillan on vocals and fell of the wagon early on during the tour and then dropped off the tour, replaced by Bev Bevan. That was the first Concert I ever went to back in 1983.. 7th row on the flor on Tony's side. Nassau Coliseum NY. It was Soo loud AF! Loudest music I ever heard in my life.

I saw them on September 26th Charlotte Coliseum North Carolina and they were amazing. John Bonham had passed away the day before on September 25th 1980 the show was dedicated to the memory of John Bonham and Vinny did a amazing drum tribute to him and the band performed a blistering 2 hour performance that evening. Dio small in size, huge singing voice and bigger heart!🤘

It was Bill Ward who did the recording and then quit. They hired Vinnie and BTW Carmine to me was the first heavy metal drummer. Watch Vanilla Fudge You Keep me Hanging On 1967.
In 75 my parents bought me a kit because I always tapped my hands and feet, it drove them crazy. Nothing clicked and I sold my kit a year later. Then I heard this album in 80 and I got to play again but didn't have an opportunity. In 82 a Friend of mine who is a drummer needed a place to practice and my parents moved to Florida and I had an empty house and I let him and I immediately went to Heaven and Hell and Molly Hatchet. Long story short a year later my parents moved, in 04 my oldest son bought me a drum kit for my Bday and shocked me and the first album i put on was Heaven and Hell. It's the best, go Bill Ward. FYI by 08 I started to get board with it and then I discovered Opeth and Martin Lopez and to this day I only play this album and all of Martin Lopez's years with Opeth. Check out the entire album of Heaven and Hell and not only do I think they're better than Ozzy years it's Bill Wards best.

I love this album, but I will admit not every song sounds like Bill. Indeed, a strong argument can be made that this record is a more suitable follow-up to Rainbow's 1978 album than to Black Sabbath's 1978 album.
Bill found Black Sabbath without Ozzy to be a strange place, and he wasn't comfortable in it. This is why lasted only very short stints, and didn't tour.

Totally different band. Produced by Martin Birch. This is the beginning of what is referred to as the New Wave of Heavy Metal. Forget about the Ozzy era when you listen to this. I challenge you to review a couple of the other tracks on this album. Try Wishing Well or Walk Away, or Die Young. Incredible grooves. But again, this was an absolutely brand new band with Ronnie James Dio at the helm. He and Iommi took the band in an entirely different direction, hence the completely different Bill Ward treatment. Bill was playing within a new set of constraints. To me, he killed it. Listen to any of those tracks I mentioned and ask yourself how another drummer would have handled it. Would have been rubbish. Despite Ward's alcoholism at the time, he still absolutely kills it on this album. He adapted.

The album 'Technical ecstasy' is generally not people's favourite record by Sabbath, but it IS mine. The style is a little different in so far as there aren't the crunchy riffs and punchy tracks but it is really emotional. I'm wandering if Geezer or Tony was going through stuff with their wife at the time?? Please listen to 'You won't change me' 'Dirty women' and my all time favourite Sabbath track 'Gypsy' - this track just kills me, listen to the subtle use of piano and Tony Iommi's guitar genius. Even after all these years, I still don't know how someone actually wrote the songs on this album, mind blowing ..... you will enjoy it, the album is very deep.

Yes, this is Bill Ward, not Appice. Ward talked about not liking the direction the band was taking under Dio lyrically, and how he really didn't remember recording Heaven and Hell becuase he was often drunk. His favorite songs from it were Lonely is the Word, and Children of the Sea. He actually did tour with Heaven and Hell to start before leaving soon after, calling Dio to say was at the airport and leaving. That's when Appice joined. He missed all of the Mob Rules period and came back to the band to record Born Again, but didn't tour on that, either.

Back in the day, I had a great deal of trouble accepting this band being called Black Sabbath, because of that change in sound and style, which to me is more conventional rock songs. Bill Ward played on this album. He left mid tour. Vinnie flown in for a show they had in Hawaii and stayed on through the follow up Mob Rules and tour. Then left with Ronnie to form the Dio band. Bill rejoined to record Born Again and couldn't again do the tour and Bev Bevan ex-ELO sat behind the kit on tour. after that it was a revolving door of musicians except for Iommi. The Dio/Appice lineup rejoined for the Dehumanizer album and tour They then left again and Iommi reformed the previous incarnation of the band with Tony Martin on vocals and Cozy Powell on drums.

There's an undeniable change between Ozzy's Sabbath and Dio's. To me it's always been about Ozzy following guitar riffs way more while Dio's vocals are more of a different melodic instrument, they tend to build more elaborate songs imo, while Ozzy's were ... raw-er I guess.

Right. They changed a lot of things with Heaven and Hell, also the riffing style, totally different song writing and Ronnie‘s fantasy lyrics. Bill Ward’s comments about Dio’s lyrics were very apt and certainly something I agree with him on. Geezer was a much better lyricist and certainly more “real” with subject matter.
I always felt Dio was too melodramatic in everything he did. Overly theatrical and certainly loved the medieval fantasy genre in full cliché.
