  • Lightroom Masking is one of the best features in Lightroom! But the auto mask feature in Lightroom is one of the biggest Lightroom Secrets a lot of people have never heard of.
    Masking in Lightroom is easy. In this tutorial you're going to learn the easy way to auto mask in lightroom - Using Lightroom masking brushes to affect Lightroom masks for color, mask overlays, and doing things like recovering blown out backgrounds or getting detail back in the sky.
    This Lightroom trick literally changed the way I edit forever - I had no idea how easy it was to create masks in Lightroom, and no idea how masking in Lightroom works as a photoshop replacement for MANY applications.
    In this tutorial you'll learn how to create masks in step by step. We'll go through several images and create masks for a variety of reasons, and show you the easiest way to make masks in your lightroom edits.

    Prior to upgrading computers, I was using a 2015 15" macbook pro with 16gb of ram - So you don't NEED the fancy new computer at all... It just speeds up my editing workflow as I'm not waiting so long for previews to load.
    💻 Renewed 2015 macbook pro is about $1200 on amazon: amzn.to/3kaotB1
    I'd recommend going with at least 16gb of ram and 512gb of storage.

    From the 100 Lightroom videos I watched this takes rank number 1. 3 clicks I’m able to edit one bridal portrait. 1st click recovers the highlights 2nd click brightens the shadows and 3rd click I’m done 😃. Dude you literally changed my life. I love you!

    I can see that AutoMask could be useful in certain situations but in most of the examples shown in the video, similar results can be achieved by using Basic and Tone Curve tools, or HSL/Color adjustments.

    • @SignatureEdits
      @SignatureEdits  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very true Mario. There are definitely multiple ways to solve similar problems in LR - the automask trick is most useful when you want to apply multiple effects at a time or when you want to adjust a color/contrast in a specific part of your image and not the entire thing. Hope its helpful for you!

    • @houstoninternationalmedia3408
      @houstoninternationalmedia3408 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That may be true but it’s nowhere near as fast as this method. Plus you can add other features to those areas rather than just changing the color and tone. But hey it’s definitely good to know how to do it different ways though 👌🏾

    I finally quite toggling the automask with the checkmark and just started holding down the CTRL key when I need it - allows you to paint up to contrast edges really fast too - just keep the + sign on the area you want to paint over... So many people don't know that the + allows you to click add to the masked set too - that's why it's displayed there. ALT works kind of the same as an eraser...

    • @SignatureEdits
      @SignatureEdits  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tips Lyle! Although I don't really understand - the ctrl key on my keyboard doesn't toggle automask for me. Are you on a PC?

    • @lylestavast7652
      @lylestavast7652 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @lylestavast7652
      @lylestavast7652 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also - it's not going to flip the checkmark in the mask box if that's what you're expecting, it'll just DO IT while you hold it down and click or drag-paint... you won't need to move over and click that thing to get the checkmarked effect of masking behavior.

    That change of green color around castle can be easily done by choosing the green color directly . But this automask is really game changer if that color is none of those listed in lightroom.

      @SignatureEdits  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree Stanley! Sometimes the HSL panel doesn't have the right color, OR you only want to change / remove the color from a specific area (For instance, desaturate the blue in a dress, but leave the blue sky) Thanks for your comment!!

    I've been using Lightroom for years and did not know this and have never seen anyone on TH-cam mention it. Although it's not the answer to every situation, this is going to make some edits much quicker and better. I immediately went to an image I was working on yesterday with a badly blown out sky behind trees and with one click, I had a close enough to perfect mask. Thankyou for sharing.

      Totally Brett! That's why I was so blown away when I heard about it: "How has nobody else told me about this feature before?!"
      Its not for every edit, BUT when you need it its super handy. Thanks for the comment!
