Matt, you don't know how much of a game-changer such a little decision is but big thanks for including proper captions in your recent videos. I'm not that hard of hearing but am stupid enough to be unable to catch up to spoken dialogue so I have to look for closed captions most of the time. thanks lego island man, u rock dude
I swear, I love TH-camrs who give captions for their videos. I don't even have problems understanding speech or anything, but it's just helpful to know 100% what they're saying, like when the audio editing is poor, or they misspeak (e.g. in his last video, he says the Qt language pronounced "cute", but I always heard "Q" because the audio mixing hid the T)
You'd think it'd be easy, since TH-cam can literally auto generate captions instantly with just a script you've written, but you'd be surprised how common it is for people to *not* write scripts...
@@Morhamms357 about those auto-generating captions...
it's... functional, but barely. if you've ever seen a video where the captions suddenly change every single second then stay stuck on a single line for several minutes, that's because youtube failed to do its job of syncing the text properly. if it can't understand what you're saying in one part, then it'll keep going through your script until it finally finds something it can understand. usually that doesn't happen until several minutes later in the video.
in my eyes, if you're not going to put the proper care into making sure your captions actually... you know, work, then you shouldn't even bother
@@Junimeekinsert pinsplash video here
@@Junimeek I wasn't talking about *those* auto generated captions. TH-cam has a feature where you can give it a script (presumably, the script you wrote for the video) and it'll time the sentences with when you say them. In my experience, it works pretty well! It's not perfect, it'll get hung up on words in the script that aren't said (descriptors of who's saying what, actions & onomatopoeia in the script, etc.), but nothing a little quick editing can't do. If your script doesn't even have those kinds of things, it's near perfect.
What you're talking about are the automatically generated captions for videos where no script was provided. It's a little confusing since they have similar names, but basically those are done completely on TH-cam's part. The creator only enabled captions at all on the video.
What I'm talking about is usually labelled "English" (or whatever language) in the captions menu in the video bar. What you're talking about would be "English (Auto Generated)", clarifying the creator had no part in making them.
@@Morhamms357 i know. we're talking about the same thing. honestly i feel that automatically generated captions work better than importing a script in some cases
The first half of the video in my head: "Steamdeck. Steamdeck. It's gonna use a steamdeck."
2nd half: oh.
Well at least Android is based on Linux so it might be possible to make a Linux version of this theoretical program
if it's open source someone could make a steam deck compatible fork bit i don't know anything about open source so maybe
Steamdeck would be a vastly overpriced solution to this non-problem.
This gives life to two billion phones (that still work perfectly as phones by the way) that are heading to landfills. That's the point of the project, and not to give you the ultimate GamePad replacement.
@@Great-Documentaries it is a pleasant "oh" not an unpleasant one lmao
@@Great-Documentaries who says someone has to exclusively use a steam deck as a wiiu game pad? It would be a pretty nice extra thing for all of the dozen wiiu owners. You would probably get a better experience just emulating the console using cemu though.
That's sick. Don't get Nintendo lawyer'd Matt
tbh he should of announced it after he created it not before
Given that Nintendo's no longer selling it, in theory any potential case that could make is diminished somewhat similar to the WiiMote, but idk for sure I haven't looked into the legality
@@4ofFive you would think that, but they always take down emulators.
Though I doubt they would worry about this
@@IamR3D88 ...eeehhh. Their case against Yuzu was primarily motivated by the monetization (Patreon EA), the promotion of piracy (TotK afaik), and the fact that it was a current gen console, and Dolphin wasn't released on Steam because Valve didn't know how they would act. Generally though, emulation is, if not permitted, at least tolerated so long as it doesn't directly facilitate piracy.
@@4ofFive They shut down the Portal WiiU port, clearly some of them still care
Edit: I say, release the APK on internet archive EXCLUSIVELY.
The WiiU was a console I wanted so badly when it came out but never got. I love seeing all the things it's capable of doing, and if it's you pushing it to the limit, it's even greater! Justice for the WiiU and its Gamepad!
5 mins of battery life🗣🔥🔥💯‼️
@@Larry1631 buy a bigger battery and problem solved, from 5 min to 10 min 🗣🔥🔥
@@Larry1631 battery life for the gamepad is pretty good, think it lasts longer than the dualsense does, and the pro controller lasted months
I bought the Wii U for sport games and zeld botw. But the BOTW was running so shit that I didn't bother. In fights fps were dropping bellow 30fps, it was unplayable at some moments. But later on I have finished the game on PC at 4k and 60fps.
It's a genuinely good console with really good games.
That's a big undertaking but if you do figure it out you'll revolutionise the entire scene, can't wait!
momentous honestly
It would be preferable to use a phone and Xbox controller over a gamepad
@@USDebtCrisis It's possible someone forks that and controllers work. I know Dualshock 3 and 4 work on Wii so it's probably possible.
@@FarmYardGaming you can Bluetooth those controllers directly to the phone. It's just a matter of mapping them to the program he makes for it
@@USDebtCrisis I thought you meant that, I suspect we wouldn't have to wait long if at all then
3:32 Love that sudden green screen cameo from the 8-bit guy.
Know where that clip came from?
@@needfuldoer4531 Unfortunately not, but at least the green screen footage itself is easily found!
I'm glad someone is taking the time to decompile that thing. Hopefully this will eventually lead to authentic Gamepad compatibility with modern PCs, even if it needs a wifi adapter.
Agreed
Maybe wifi ain't even needed
Just plug some usb receiver or smth
@@ssg-eggunner the Wii U’s USB port is for charging only and doesn’t transmit data. Though I guess you could hack one in.
@@trunkit8749that is incorrect, all the USB ports are data ports
The main reason for me keeping my Wii U under my TV and not fully embrace emulation of the Wii U as of yet, is games such as Nintendo Land. This game needs the Wii U gamepad for minigames such as the hide and seek minigame. If this becomes a reality, and also gets working on PC with emulation later on, I suppose my Wii U can finally rest.

I also want to join
3:32 I was not expecting to see the 8-Bit Guy just out of nowhere
lego island guy is back🎉
Real
Fun fact, I actually did import one of those Japanese Wii U gamepads back in the day because I broke the gamepad on the Wii U when I was a little kid thanks to someone my family knew at the time who was Japanese that visited every now and then, and I don't remember how but we got the gamepad working on my PAL Wii U somehow.
Homebrewing removes region locks
You hacked it that's what you did
Either:
A. You got a PAL Gamepad from Japan or;
B. Someone somewhere disabled the region locking.
@@PyhisPahis WRONG! Homebrewing removes region locks for games, not GamePads. It is a VERY complex mod to make a Japanese Gamepad work on PAL or North American Wii U's and @ardishco is misremembering or making shit up.
@@Great-Documentaries Actually, there is an Aroma plugin that allows any region gamepads to connect with no issues nowadays... well, apart from the fact that if the firmware on the gamepad is somehow not the latest version, you'll have no way to update it, which actually happened to me on a PAL Wii U with a US gamepad, and it made some features like the Quick Start unusable, but it should be incredibly rare to run into a gamepad like that unless it hasn't been used since like the launch lmao
Also before that, it was also fairly easily possible if you had a Raspberry Pi Pico or Unpatched Switch with the use of a tool called UDPIH.
Honestly, it was disappointing how much the Gamepad was not fully realized by Nintendo. I would have loved to have an experience akin to 4 swords on the gamecube with my gamepad and a few others
Being able to have both players in Madden using their GamePads to call defenses and audibles/blitzes without the other player seeing it would be a dream come true for Madden fans. Never happened thanks to Nintendo.
Wii U was always a silent winner, and a tech demo for Switch basically - and that turned amazing as we now.
The Wii U was always a dismal failure, and the 3DS's successor was the Switch. The 3DS has SO much more in common with the Switch than the Wii U ever did.
And the Wii U was so vastly underpowered compared to Xbox One and PS4. Some of you Nintendo fanboys forget that. Only Nintendo fanboys were dumb enough to purchase by far the least powerful console of its generation that, unlike the Wii, did not have a gimmick making it worthwhile.
@@Great-Documentaries Well, the switch is basically, In terms of power, just a cheap android tablet from a few years ago, also the 3DS has portability in common with the switch, but like... The Wii U's gamepad actually is at least horizontal and has 1 screen like the Switch. Other things they have in common is shared between all 3.
I would aim for Android Version 5 and onwards because of the compiler change (JIT/AOT compiler specifically)
You can get those devices as cheap as their 4.0 counterparts and a lot of 4.0 devices can be swapped with a custom rom to get 5.0, and even 7.1 support (Did this with my own Android 4.4 device back in the day that had a MT6582)
Also with Android 5.0+ the controller support is much better, I was unable to hook up a DS4 controller to my own device when it was in 4.4.
I hope you can also release this on steam deck, since that seems like it would be an almost perfect fit.
Well I don't know if the steam deck has cameras on it...
@@speeder3235 Eeh, almost a perfect fit means essentially its missing one thing and yeah its the cameras on the steam deck but at the same time, it got everything else.
+1 to this, was my first thought

Oooo, can't wait for some videos about this process! Very exciting project to pick up, Matt! I hope it goes well.
Good idea! This looks like it'd be a lot of fun. Looking forward to development videos about the details
This is insane. You’re so real for this
This is a sick idea, you might even be able to load the thing on a raspberry pi or any other sbc and build a fully custom gamepad
You are a legend for attempting this. Anyone who's tried to get a wii u used recently knows that getting a functional gamepad is the most difficult part. In fact, a functional wii u is typically less expensive than a functional gamepad. This will be a huge boon to everyone trying to play the last few remaining wii u games in 2024 and beyond. I'm excited
I've been trying to hunt down a gamepad for a console I got for free so I can create my "All in one except Switch" Nintendo box and it hasn't been going well.
Minimum you're spending $100 for just the tablet and full bundles range anywhere from $200-$300 it's nuts.
When you consider I got the console for free, spending the $100 for just the gamepad is out of the cards, It'll rot there until i can pickup a gamepad for $30~ tops.
@@Landjrin I was literally in the same boat not too long ago; got a wii u for pennies then had to spend 70 on a working gamepad. Apparently the touchscreen isn't too hard to replace so maybe try looking for one that's functional but with a broken touchscreen. Good luck though 👍
Hi Matt, I just wanted to say the editing on your last video was really great, you really took it to another level and it was noticed!
Wiiiuuuuwiiiiuuuuwiiiiiiuuuuuuwiiiiuuuu Is that an ambulance siren or the sound of Nintendo's *best* console!!???
Dolphin (The Gamecube and Wii emulator) actually explained why you can't do certain emeulation on ios due to J.I.T. compilers being banned from the app store. And the FTC antitrust Lawsuit is partially about hardware features being blocked from 3rd party use, especially criticized by banks wanting to use NFC to compete with Apple Wallet with a 0 fee alternative.
Good luck with your project!
dude, this project sounds amazing!!! I really wish you achieve it
Be careful with the Nintendo litigations suing everyone doing anything with their stuff. Also excited to see what you cook up!
It’s really dumb. They refuse to sell gamepads separately except for in Japan. And THEN they región lock them. ITS MORE WORK TO DO THAT THEN NOT! AARRRGGGHHHH!!!!
Wouldn’t worry about custom hardware or jailbreaking, it’s only using their IP that they get triggered for some reason.
There’s really nothing they can sue over, here, since he’s not breaking copy protections.
And not that I would put it past Nintendo to do something so petty, but it would really make no sense to bitch about a project preserving the WiiU when Nintendo already wants to pretend it never existed.
@@AROAH Some interpretations of the DMCA could mean that bypassing the region locking that was apparently implemented is illegal. Depending on the implementation of the region locking, what is necessary to work around it, and whatever interpretation of the (enormous and sprawling) DMCA the Nintendo lawyers feel like using on that particular day.
@@timseguine2and we've seen recently that Nintendo is extremely liberal with how they choose to "interpret" the DMCA when whipping out a lawsuit.

Pretty excited for the outcomes of this project! I've never had the Wii U personally, and even if I wanted to get one, it's truly unfortunate how Wii U's gamepad are so atrociously over-priced on the second-hand market; so an open-source mobile solution is going to be a game-changer :)

I've been wanting to see this exact product come to fruition for the last decade or so. I thought it would happen sooner but just glad to see it happen at all at this point. So happy that you're the one doing tbh, modding old consoles is always kind of a passion project for the person creating the mod (kinda has to be so they can stay motivated) and you've always had passion for the things you care about most. Dude.
You're the dude, man! You're doin it!
Wow, this is a pretty ambitious project , goos luck :)
When you talked about how a modern phone already has everything necessary on board I realized that there's another device which, except for the camera, also comes with everything necessary to act as a WiiU gamepad: the Steam Deck. Unlike the phone it also comes with some really good inputs and you can just bolt on any boring old USB webcam that you can get for 20 bucks and it'll work so that's not really an issue either.
The real issue is, of course, that unlike a phone not nearly everyone owns one of those.
Maybe as a follow-up project?
The Steam Deck and Android both run a modified Linux kernel iirc, so it would be feasible to port it without much issue, hopefully.
It's a good year when MattKC uploads
