Excellent video, worked perfect for me on both my keys. Only thing I did a bit different is I used a paper clip that I modified with making a small hooked end to pull the circuit board off. Also, did not use a vice to break the case instead I used two sets of pliers to break back the cover off to the point where half the VW emblem was exposed. After that, peeled it off and unscrewed the back easily. All in all, take your time as the spring loaded key is a bit tricky to get back on. Thanks....oh and btw, the cost was like $6.00 each on amazon...awesome!
This is by far the best video that shows how to do this. I just bought 2002 jetta, although the remote works the case is beat up and got a replacement case though eBay. They still trim recommended u go to locksmith to remove the key. THANK U FOR THIS VIDEO!!!
this is fantastic info, but what if i don't have the replacement key? i lost my entire key fob to my 2007 vw jetta this morning and i need to get a replacement - and of course, the dealership is saying it will take 5 days+ to order it, cut it, and program it at a small cost of $485. UNREAL - i don't have 5 days to wait nor do i want to spend that much money on a key. any suggestions on how i can circumvent having to work through/with the dealership until it's time to program the actual key (i've been researching all day today that the actual key itself has to be cut for your specific VIN, so unless i can find the right kind of key to order online via amazon.com, ebay.com, etc., CUT or UNCUT, it seems as though my only option is to order it through the dealership)..GRRR.. anyone have ANY ADVICE and/or suggestions for me? i'm desperately needing to travel by friday of this week for the holidays and i'm absolutely LOST about what kind of options i have. HELP, PLEASE!!! :( thank you!
Let me make a suggestion as I did this and it proved successful. In place of trying to get the transponder out, use that part of the old key, makes sense, the coded key is already worn its grove and its much easier and less risky to do it this way.
Tells people to crush the bottom half in a vice, lol like we all got a vice and workshop we can visit when we like. YOU REMOVE THE TRANSPONDER WITH NAIL POLISH OR GLUE REMOVER TO SOFTEN THE GLUE.
Hey, have you personally tried taking out the transponder with nail polish? I'm waiting for a replacement and I don't want to screw up or damage it even with the nail polish.
This was an interesting video. I wish I had ran across it before I paid local VW. Luckily they made me wait so long for it, that I didn't have to pay the full 300+ they wanted. Tho my car is a 2000, so likely pieces have been too old or broken for new key. My key never lit up too. My valet key has issues, it doesn't really respond well with the electrical system in car. I need to fix that. Someway, some how.
What if I lost my RFID when my key was broken? I dropped my key and before I could pick it up it was run over by another car and now all I have left is the metal key
i have all the whole key parts , my grandaughter had it messed up when i got home the whole key ie all here bot the key came loose from the remote the sping part and round part is seperated from the remote. the remote still has the pen and round part in it. the key is just the flat part came out the pin is what broke or the metal part thereand the key slid out all flat part . can you help on what i need to order i have all my paper work , vin # and all but they seem to think sice i have every thing that i may not have to order a lot.can you help me please.
Matthew Thornberry could you please link me to the Amazon page you used for this purchase? I have searched for the remote but many different posts come up and I really do not want to buy the wrong one. Thanks in advance!
could not for the life of me get the spring loaded switchblade part to work right it only goes one way must have tried it 50 times 2 plus hours just would not spring open, I put the old one back together worked perfect and slid the new half back on the old half still mystified as to why it wouldn't work for me
WARNING, WARNING, WARNING: While this is great video, there is a HUGE GOTCHA that you must be warned of. Removing that glass transponder is a nightmare to deal with in many keys. Mine is super glued in heavily and deeply bathing it inside the nail polish remover for over 30 minutes only helped to soften limited area, and the transponder is not budging when I try to wiggle it out. I know any pressure will easily crack this fragile piece. I've been wiggling with this part for 1 hour now with no success, and trying to figure how to break this thing apart ever so gently so that I can remove that transponder.
+Oneness Mind Finally got the transponder removed, and now the new key looks and work great. It took about 90 minutes just to repeat the process of soaking in nail polish remover, carefully scraping of loosened glue with a pointed pick, and shaving off the sidewall with a razor blade just to remove the fragile transponder.
That's what I did. The only problem is that the new parts are almost, but not exactly the same as the old parts. I did both of my 2004 Passat keys. They new part would not press together with the old part, by hand. I had to gently tap with a mallet or use a vise to squeeze them together. They both work fine. If you don't mind half the key new and half the key old and scratchy, it's much faster to reuse the old metal key half.
busted the freakin transponder in the vice. $300 F- up. + No wheels for a week. I hate VW will never buy this crap again. $300 bucks for a KEY!!!? GTFO,
So, there are two different KEY FOBS you can buy out there listed for the same car. HLO 1J0959753AM/1J0959753DC or 1J0959753T. When I enter 2002 Passat, for example, both show up on Amazon, Ebay, etc. Undistinguishable from each other, the differences are undetectable until you sucker up and buy one, take the circuit board out of one and realize by mere fractions of a hair, the board won't reach the pegs. This key fob shell is now useless and I can't return it. Don't buy until you're certain which is which. It may take buying the wrong one to figure it out. And now I have two reasons to hate Germans.
Thank u thank uuuu. I been trying to get that little emblem off and could not figure it out and you are the only person who explained how you did it

you are the man, nice clear voice, and clear and consise video many thanks ..Tim..U.K.
Great!Remarkable TH-cam movies posted at this site, I am going to subscribe for on a regular basis updates, as I don’t want to miss this series.
I would not use a vise to open the key end. You're screwed if you break the glass capsule. Take the VW logo off and remove screw.
Great visual which helped make a difficult task very easy with a well presented display for battery removal and installaion
This video just saved me £40, thank you very much !
I just ordered a key case, this video is perfect for me. Thanks very much.
Can't wait to get my new case and swap out this video is very helpful thx
Worked great on my 2001 vw passat. Thanks for the video
Many thanks. Just used your video and did a replacement in 30 minutes...
This tutorial was fantastic!
it worked for me. It took over 2hours to complete. the sensor didn't break, cut the plastic very softly! PS take your time!!!
Brilliant DIY video. Thank you

How many turns to get an adequate spring in the new fob? Great video! I need to order some for my 2000 Audi.
Cant you just use the the old top part with the new bottom part ?
GREAT VIDEO! THANKS A BUNCH MAN!
Thank you for sharing. Very much appreciated.
Do you think this will work with a key from a 2000 Golf GL? Its the key that uses 2 batteries instead of 1. Please help
The RFID is the immobilizer which locks you out of the car if it doesn't match up with the cluster and computer.
This worked perfectly, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did the exact same thing for my jetta 2001, but now I can't get it to stay on. Any suggestion? I need help.
Aw man was hoping to see how to get new remote WITH new circuit board and program. Not just new shell

thanxs
pulling the VW emblem off is way easier then crushing it, good vid overall though
Why would you even replace the key part, seems like using the old key base would work just fine?!
the old key base is too fat. just tried that tonight, didn't work.

Ok, so I had to saw off the "pillars" he is talking about. My board would not fit without nicking the pillar with a blade until it was a nub.
