So why are they using normal tires on the Touareg instead of off-road tires ? I dont get it
This video clearly shows the limitations of slip-controlled 4x4. The Touareg with the central and rear differential locking plus air suspension would result in an nearly equal performance as the Disco.

Touareg "Individual" package has street tires. Discovery has proper multi-terrain tires. With the same tires they would perform off-road almost identically. The advantage might even go to the Touareg because it is lighter and had better ground clearance.

Comments about Land Rovers being unreliable are out of date and were left behind with the Disco 3. I've had my Disco 4 for 2 years, driven it around Australia on and off-road and not had one problem. And I don't know anyone else with a LR or RR built in the last 3 years who has had a problem.

Dafür dass der Test von ca. 2005 ist und damals im DSF lief (ich erinnere mich noch) ist die Qualität wirklich erstaunlich gut. Kaum zu glauben, dass die Karren alle mal neu waren. Und es ging auch ohne Smartphone damals, das waren noch Zeiten...
In this they didn't compare apple to apple they bring the standard touareg comparing to a fully equipped rang rover,they should bring the touareg off road version,air suspension and more differentials lock as the rover, with a good choice of tires it could take anywhere , I'm driving one , its really a beast,
The Touareg they tested was bare bones! Didn't have either the rear differential locker or air suspension and it is supposed to go up against a Rover?

Für den Disco gibt es kein Pendant im VW-Konzern. Man hätte den Touareg mit einem Range Rover vergleichen müssen. Einzig vergleichbares deutsches Fabrikat ist der Mercedes GL.
both cars are amazing, both cars have their advantages and disadvantages so picking which one is best is trully the matter of taste in this case
Für mich ist klahr der VW Touareg 3.0 TDI V6 der Favorit ganz klar ein deutsches Auto VW ihr seit einfach die besten kompliement!!!

Landrover dominates this toureg. I like the way they put the most stylish toureg "individual" against one of the more basic discovery range. If they only put it up against the "HSE".

the touareg has no diff and no air suspension like the discovery like the guy in the video said. they are optional though.
Stattet den Tuareg erstmal mit passenden Reifen aus. Der Landrover kommt schon von Hause aus mit Off-Road reife, während der Tuareg nunmal an den Markt der Stadt und und Überlandbevölkerung angepasst ist. Der Landrover ist nun mal auch auf Farmer geeicht.... Es ist nicht immer das Gerät was den Unterschied macht, sondern diese vier merkwürdigen runden, schwarzen, aus Gummi bestehenden Dinger namens Reifen.
60 Grad Steigfähigkeit? Soll das Prozent heißen oder tatsächlich Grad? 125% Steigfähigkeit kommen mir ein bisschen viel vor, weil vorher auch 35 Grad angegeben waren. Was den Toareg angeht weiss ich nicht, warum sich einige hier so aufregen, wenn der Toareg schon ohne den ganzen Offroad-schnickschnack soviel kostet (oder sogar mehr) wie der Discovery, ist der Vergleich doch fair. Das der Discovery trotz des noch höheren Gewichtes und des größeren Luftwiderstandes weniger verbraucht, gibt dem VW den Rest, meiner Meinung nach hat der Land Rover verdient gewonnen, auch wenn er auf der Straße natürlich haushoch unterlegen ist.
wieso auf der Strasse unterlegen, es müssten viel mehr Menschen mit solchen Fahrzeugen fahren die zu gelassenem Fahren annimieren, und nicht die nervösen übermotoriesierten Spritschleudern, brauchen nur Menschen mit mangelndem EGO. Kein vernünftiger Mensch braucht einen Geländewagen der über 160 km/h fahren kann.
The Discovery is a Land Rover in the conventional sense, it comes with 4 wheel drive and a separate ladder chassis, just like in the defender. It also comes with a locking rear differential which is an offroad feature not found on Defenders. Just because it has leather seats doesn't means it's a Range Rover.
I own a Touareg and take it off-road extensively. Can go most places. The Disco is slighlty better off-road, - fact. Touareg is slighlty better on-road.
This review is however flawed. It's obvious they left the ESP on in the Touareg, - that combined with the absence of a rear-diff lock in this model makes the review worthless.
The Disco automaticaly disables/modifies it's ESP program by selecting the mud and snow setting. The Disco is more fool proof in that way, as proven in this clip.
@bullyoxon Agree - the VW is not driven in the same manner or in the same lines. A lot of the time VW driven slower and not with constant pressure on pedal which makes it slow down just before a difficult part. This is a farce.
Chunkier Tyres on the Toureg would improve its Traction by a good 50-60%.
Not bad for VW's first 4x4.... ;)

Das Interieur des Discovers ist nicht zu vergleichen mit dem Touareg! Der VW ist Luxus pur, der Discovery ist ein Plastik-Bomber, sieht aus wie ein Ami!

Judging from the off road dial the test driver set, I don't think this touareg in the video has the 4x4motion. All-Wheel drive and 4x4 are two mechanically different in handling off road. So, i don't think is video is doing a fair comparison of both cars.

i'v owned both,, the VW i had for 18 months and loved it, great powerful beast,,,the discovery i had for 2 years and loved that too, so much so that i now have the discovery 4 which is an animal!!!!. The discovery wins hands down for me everytime, and a true 7 seater, go and buy one lol.
I'm a die hard rover and veedub fan I actually sell volkswagens but I gotta tell ya.... A Touareg off road..... Comical... The TDis are beasts though! They're great for towing and stuff... If y'all wanna be doin stuff like this though, buy a land rover.

If you put the same tyres you have on the lady on the Touareg you would have a completely different result.

I'm a massive Discovery fan boy, but I still have to admit the VW is an excellent off roader. it's the only off-roader I will buy other than a Land Rover
Jedem gefällt ein anderes Auto aber beim Discovery sind die Gelände Funktionen schon Serienmäßig dabei und beim Touraeg eben nicht.
Und beim Discovery mit 188 kW (mein Auto)macht die Straße auch Spaß
Dafür benötigt man beim Tourag eben die Gelände Funktionen.
Insgesamt kann man sagen das die Autos ca. gleichwertig sind

Because they are using normal tires on the disco - with offroad tires on the disco it will go up the Eiger Nordwand.
Put off road tires on the discovery and it will also perform even better than it did in this video.
This is a good comparison as both vehicles were fitted with the same road biased tires.
The Touareg had no difs and air Suspension
how can weight be a plus on any vehicle? especially on off road cars, it makes it easier to sink in the mud and sand, makes it harder to climb uphill, harder to stop downhill and it is always a big minus.
if these cars had proper tyres for this terrain they wouldnt even spin their wheels on this video (well maybe touareg would work a bit harder than the disco)

@drainer753 actually the Discovery is the best off-road besides the Defender. Range Rovers aren't as good in mud and very wet grass as the Discovery.

It's kinda dumb going "offroad" with cars on street tyres. Both the Touareg and the Discovery go way further on proper tyres, but the Discovery will do more thanks to the more advanced 4x4 system. Of course it won't beat a highly modified defender or something of that sort, but it's meant to be comfy too. Combine those two and the result is great. Add a winch, and you'll go further than most people ever need to.
Its not a spoiler its the luggage racks slid together.

Touareg with 90/10 tires and LR with 80/20... In my Freelander makes big difference too - Anyway Discovery for 4x4 and Touareg for everyting else!
i think a munga 2t could get through the mud. it is unfortunate the vw could not. although that could be tires.. ruts, driver error, any number of things. diff settings.

Touareg rules, normally because I have one
Meinen Disco fahr ich meistens unter 10L - Rekord waren 7.8 Schnitt auf 350km Autobahn. 10L ist für ein Auto was doppelt so viel wiegt wie ein Golf und etwa doppelt so viel PS hat ein akzeptabler Wert.

Wie kann man denn den aufgemöbelten Innenraum vom touareg mit nem SE-disco vergleichen ,wenn dann schon nen HSE
es gab einen cut wie der touareg im schlamm war und man konnte nicht mal sehen wie der touraeg so dreckig geworden ist, haben Motorvision da ein paar kübel schlamm draufgeschüttet??

I had the last years 2 Touareg both with all offroad gadgets from the VW-Pricelist ,the first Touareg was after 10 months away the second after 18 months ,both of them Lemon Cars at its finest .
The last 4 years i own a Discovery 3 with all that stuff that i had in the Touaregs ,and yes its the better car Offroad anyway and even onroad its more comfortable ,and its have even more loadingcapacity .

Der Disco wäre kein Landy, wenn er den Touareg Offroad nicht schlagen würde.
Mit Geländepaket ist der Touareg aber voll geländetauglich. Der Disco ist ein Geländewagen, der Touareg nur ein SUV. Für ein SUV allerdings ist der Touareg I Offroad aber unschlagbar. X5, Q7, XC90 oder Mercedes W163 können ihm da nicht das Wasser reichen. Und er passt halt eher auf die Autobahn oder in ein Parkhaus als der Disco.
2 Autos, die zwar von den Rahmendaten her vergleichbar sind, aber im Kern vollkommen unterschiedliche Käufer ansprechen. Das war damals, als sie neu waren so und hat seine Gültigkeit heute nicht verloren.
Der Touareg hat zwar einen hohen Reifenverschleiß und bis 05 Elektronikprobleme, aber ist generell zuverlässiger als ein Disco 3.
Insofern sollte man heute lieber zum Touareg greifen. Natürlich mit Sperren ohne Luftfahrwerk. Dann kann man wenig falsch machen. Der Disco ist ungleich unzuverlässiger.

Well yes and no. Although the interior of the ld is not as good as the touareg, you have to remember that the vw is a luxury car. The land rover is a comfortable car. It has a nice interior

Geländewagen vs. SUV und dann der SUV noch ohne Geländepaket... Ist doch völlig klar, dass der Touareg auf der Straße besser ist und der Disco 3 im Gelände ganz andere Wege geht. Das ist bei den Nachfolgern nicht anders. Ein Toyota Land Cruiser J12/J15 ist der passende Konkurrent für einen Disco, oder ein Mitsubishi Pajero 4. Bei den Oberklasse SUV ist der Touareg ja der beste Geländegänger mitsamt dem ganz neuen ML.

is there even a point comparing these two cars? The land rover is so obviously superior. It seems like a blatant slap in the face to the touareg which is really only useful on the streets. it's not a real off road car,
Original touareg tire is lower than that of the discovery in offroad
Discovery has low gear, differential lock, perm. foru wheel drive, terrain response.. Toureg has only foru wheel drive :P

Also ersteinmal sind beide KEINE Geländewagen sondern SUV´s. 2. wurde der Discovery für Gelände und der Touareg für die Straße entwickelt. 3. ist der Disco ein Handschalter und der VW ein Automatik-Wagen. Eine Wandler-Automatik verhält sich im Gelände ganz anders als ein mechanisches Handschaltgetriebe. 4. ist die Ausstattung des Sisco mit dem des VW nicht zu vergleichen: keine Traktionskontrolle, keine gscheiden Reifen, kein Terain-Response oder etwas ähnliches etc. etc. 5. Der Discovery ist mit dem VW NICHT ZU VERGLEICHEN da beide für einen um WELTEN auseinander liegenden Zweck gebaut wurden.
FAZIT: Motorvision hat ganz schön was falsch gemacht! 🤦🤦
