    Hi there. As an LC Prado owner and have a bit of experience on Sand Dunes, I can tell that the traction control is off. If it was ON, the LC would do all of things the driver in the video failed to do. In extreme cases, still you can go for the central differential locking and low gear of course. I have never driven nor owned a LR, but no doubt, it’s a phenomenal off road machine.
    Note: Please let us be civilized to each other :)

    I am a Land rover owner but I can't believe that a cruiser would perform so bad against an disco 3!! I'm sure you didn't use the right locks and ranges with the Toyota because this difference in perfomance is just unreal!!!

    I love sand driving. Drove and owned different 4x4’s. The LR is a phenomenal off-road vehicle. In my opinion I’m not sure the under dog’s tyre pressure was correct for sand driving. To get a fair playfield both vehicles need to be fitted with the same type of tyres and equal tyre pressures all round. The Prado shouldn’t have struggled so much especially on a flat surface.

    You talk absolute rubbish Eyad, i have had a Disco since new 1999 Td5, this vehicle has travelled around Australia twice on road and off road towing a 2.2 ton off road caravan, it has now done 436986Km without anything but the usual wear and tear.
    I have just serviced and replace the fuel cooler, not bad for the mileage.

    While I think the Discovery is the superior vehicle for this terrain, the Prado clearly was not correctly configured. I think it could have done well in crawl-control mode if nothing else.

The looks of the Disco 3 I think are way better. I don't think Toyotas are junk in fact they are reliable as hell but I just cant give up on Land Rover. I love my truck and hope it is long living!

    As someone who absolutely loves Land Rover, i'd say this test was BS. Especially in regards to the the prado. Either it's not equipped with Toyota's version of terrain select and the traction control is turned off, or it's in the wrong setting, as it was clear the Toyota was doing nothing to prevent wheel slip. In regards to the jeep that really just shows the effectiveness of traction vs limited slip differentials rather then anything else, and a rubicon with lockers would be much better.

    I've got a 120 V6 Prado and I drive in the sand dunes the tire pressure is a major factor no way a Prado performance is like that! Come on guys Top Gear is marketing so hard for British cars no need for others : P

    • @OrionsWarriorUK
      @OrionsWarriorUK 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      try taking a prado into mud. it is terrible compared to a landrover!! (or just off road in general compared to a land rover) and have you seen the brand new land cruiser??? it is the ugliest 4x4 alongside with that new jeep cherokee that money can buy at the moment. there is a reason that top gear has 350,000,000 people watching that show. and thats because they are right. regardless if the land rover is British or not. it is in a different league to any toyota when it comes to off road, and looks, and build quality, and performance, and comfort, and with the newer landrovers, reliability also. put that in your pipe and smoke it :)

  • @waled226
    @waled226 10 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    Prado tires pressure are high
    And thats explains this bad performance...
    When driving in sand, tires should be put 15 or 20 psi. for optimal traction and performance.
    I bet that the LR3 tires pressure are lowered.

    • @wesleyraleigh9294
      @wesleyraleigh9294 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Tyre pressure has nothing to do with the first test.
      What is shows is that the Toyota does not have the technology to take power away form the wheels in a cross-axle. power is lost to the two wheels in the air.
      The land rover forces power away from the spinning wheels and sends to wheels with traction. the sand has nothing to do with this.
      In the 2nd part, a wheel spinning in the sand becomes a path of least resistance for the power and that's what it gets stuck.
      Dont be a butt-hurt toyota fan. they are SOLID cars, but their technology is ancient. If it is reasonable for you to assume tyre pressure, then I will make the same assumption and say they were let down, and the land rovers were not. its just a superior vehicle regardless of your preference.

      You have never driven on sand dunes right ? You know nothing about sand driving ... This is completely due to tyre pressure and Toyota traction control should switch off in sand + differential lock must be put on. (These controls are in manual in prado)

Disco's never went off-road and broke down under normal driving conditions if land rover fix their reliability issues they would be the all round winner on and off-road
    In my opinion reliability,resale,looks are a must when living with a big 4wd each to their own, personal opinions only no school yard attacks just what I have witnessed in the real world.

      wesleysuperman So you really think that this test is fair? It looks like Land Rover propaganda to me. Take a look at some of the unbiased 4wd tests on the prado. It performs WAY better than this video shows. BTW my cousins discovery had a fire in the engine bay while driving to Sydney yesterday!

    • @wesleysuperman
      @wesleysuperman 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would the test not be fair? cars are the same price (Actually in SA the Prado costs more) and they are the best offerings of their respective companies.
      That sucks for your brother, but what discovery does he have? model? year? was it regularly serviced? and sadly, Austalia do get a very low spec compared with those of USA, UK and south africa. Although that's no excuse. but I am assuming your brothers discovery is new for purpose of this argument?

    @REDR8 I disagree my friend, first I bought one J150 VX V6 engine, full leather and yes, it really has more electronical gadgets and a better traction control, but! then I tried J120 and I fell in love with that baby; Best looking, SAME engine (1GRFE V6) also full leather and the best: a brutal powertrain to climb a very steep mountain (with J150 I couldn't). So, I went back my J150 and bought J120 (the last one in 2009). Greetings.

    I have owned both Land Rovers and Land Cruisers, From the Disco 2, P38, to the LR3 and LR4 and have owned LC's from the FJ60 to the 100 series... The ONLY Land Rover I would ever buy again was my 2006 LR3 with the Ford V6 (the first LR that EVER got me over 150K with ZERO engine problems)... I would happily take back ANY of the LC's I have EVER owned (All got me over 200K with NO problems.. Land Rover left me on the side of the road AND trail more times than I can remember... Toyota is the only way to go.. But you cant beat the ride quality of any LR (when they are running)

    Middle differential in both D4 and Prado is torsen type. Front differential in both is open. Rea differential lock in both is optional. So really, the 4wd technology is at the same level. Land Rover just has packet it nicely, and made a great marketing name "terrain response", but the systems are really exactly using the same principles. ABS sensors in wheels to detect wheel rotation speed, and applying brakes to not let the momentum get lost from a wheel that has lost it's traction.

      I agree with desertization. You can tell the pressures are different because of the way the tyres on the prado dig in to the sand.The only way to see if the pressures are different is with a pressure gauge. 20 PSI doesn't look any different to road pressures at the distance this video shows.

    Why would you buy a Toyota over a Land Rover haha? The Discovery is superb off road and although the Toyota is good, can the Toyota beat the Discovery for on road drive, classiness or practicality? The Discovery 4 is the ultimate 4x4. Go look at reviews and see for yourself, the Toyota comes nowhere near the Disco for its wide range of talents.

      Ok haha. Go look at reviews and find one that says the LC is the better car ALL ROUND. Its meant for off road only which is not good enough in today's market. And regardless of your excuse, its clearly not even as good as the LR off road either.

      Don't be so stupid. Every car site says the Discovery is the best 4x4 out, why can't you just accept that. They can't all be biased hahahaha! Think about it; however good the LC is, is it as classy? Is it as good to drive on road? Is it as practical? Simple. It isn't. Sit in one and drive one on the road and you'll know what I mean.

      I admit they have better reliability. But you haven't answered my questions. Is it classier, better to drive and more practical? Reliability isn't the be all and end all. Besides, loads of manufactures are hit and miss. Not all LR's will be bad!

    • @alistairward8637
      @alistairward8637 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Land Rover's aren't the most reliable but everyone exaggerates it. Do all Land Rovers break down every ten miles? Look at other videos then, the Discovery is still quality off road. And even if it isn't quite as good off road, its still much better than the LC in other areas. Its loads of cars rolled into one and its breadth of talents is incredible. Its an amazing car.

    I completely believe it. I'm sure a lot of Toyota fans are blindly loyal and upset about the video but I am not talking from an opinion, but rather the fact that I actually own both a Land Rover and a Land Cruiser and as reliable as the Toyotas are the traction system in the Land Rover is far superior. I live in the desert and use them both. Toyotas are strong and reliable but the differential is a bad design. you have to upgrade it to have a limited slip diff and lockers otherwise you almost always only have two wheels spinning.. .and this video is proof. You can make the Cruiser great with upgrades and modifications however, but thats not factory.

    Too many time I've seen these vs. type videos. There are too many variables to compare vehicles unless the same driver drives both vehicles and they are set up similarly. For example, it's obvious the Disco driver has more experience in the way he attacks the sand hill - use your speed to get yourself up there - the Prado driver approached way too slow. I'd be willing to bet money that had the driver of the Disco driven the Prado, it would have done just as well. It's 75% driver, and 25% truck.

    Just a quick update on this video, the LR has been sold for a tenth of what the owner paid due to the oil leaks, electrical problems and finally the airbag suspension failures nearly sent him broke. On the other hand the Prado owner finally let his tyres down took a driving lesson and was last seen enjoying a Holliday in the Australian outback pulling a 2T caravan without ever opening the bonnet.

    I really wish there was definitive info out there, I'm really stuck between a Disco and Land Cruiser (Prado) but every comparison just breaks into pointless bickering in the comments section.
    I'm English but don't have any particular leaning either way, so far my thoughts are that the LR offers far better value for money (Here anyway) in terms of specification, for instance the terrain response and air suspension is an extra on the LC (On a 48k car!) but is standard on all disco's, even the cheapest models, having said that the anecdotal evidence suggests, almost overwhelmingly, that the Disco has reliability issues but the Toyotas don't.
    If anyone has anything meaningful to add or can point me at some other comparisons I would be grateful!

      Mate, i live in Oz and have done many 4WDing trips. You're spot on about the technology edge that Disco has over Toyota. But as always Japos got better reliability as well as cheaper maintenance.
      Personally I'd go for the Disco for a few reasons: The terrain response and air suspension are second to none. I mean they are absolutely fantastic. Plus Disco handles much better on-road. So if you don't mind the extra maintenance cost and depreciation go for Disco.
      ps: What you see here on this video looks a bit odd to me. Prado is a very capable off-roader. I reckon they didn't let enough air off tyres and that's why it keeps getting stuck. My 1995 Toyota 4Runner does a better job than that on the sand :) They simply don't know how to drive !

      Lee McDonald No worries mate. It's just a personal taste. The main reason that Toyota are so popular here is because they're tough and indestructible. More importantly if you're stuck in the outback, those bush-mechanics would be able to fix it easily.
      But in terms of technology and cool stuff cannot beat the Landie.

    1st: Landie turned wheels left, LC turned towards the bump.
    2nd: Landie got WAAY more momentum, (it is after all faster).
    3rd: Again, more momentum, he got so much speed he even cut the throttle.

    @mart6661 The complaint people have is with today's modern advanced AWD being installed on Toyota SUV for much improved ON-Road capability. But unlike the OLDER Toyota with manual or part time, fully engaged 4WD diffs, they tend to be less capable on extreme roads, unless re-fitted or modified with traditional components. Rovers on the other hand, even today, maintains much of the capability of the older cars, sacrificing some on-road performance to keep the off-road capability

    I have a feeling the Prado owner didn't set up the car properly and dont know how to off road based on the first test.

    So with proper equipment and some aftermarket modifications where newer Toyota falls short from factory equipment, any Toyota Land Cruiser or Prado can be just as effective. It's more that they chose not to equip them from the factory as such these days, since MOST normal users never go extreme off roading, and prefer fuel economy and more precise computer assisted handling on road, which is the primary use 99% of the time for most people.
