TRANS FAILSAFE PROG Symptoms & FIX [E39] + E38/E53 & RR L322

  • Quick video to show the symptoms I had when my e39 540i Auto got the trans failsafe prog error. Car wouldn't' go into gear and sometimes wouldn't even start. I scanned the transmission using INPA to find the error (60 gear switch) which is also known as the position or neutral switch. The issue never occurred for whilst driving. It would occur intermittently from the first start of the day and usually turning the engine off and starting it again would clear the issue. Sometimes I had to put it in neutral first and then start the car and then it would be ok.

I followed this guide and replaced the switch with a 2nd hand one. You could open the existing one like the OP did in this forum and clean it out.

Then lift your foot off after one minute and turn the key off totaly off, and listen you will hear it reseting through the air vents , Then start the car as normal i hope this helps .if not its the rear offside speed sensor .

It's the problem with the shift switch. When the problem occurs, you should pay attention to the display "PRND" in the lower right corner of the instrument. When your car is normal, "PRND" has a gear display, so the problem is with the shift switch.

So, for the gearbox switch fault that I made the video on, the transmission didn't slip. But after 4 months of this video I had the error show up again but this time it was due to a faulty solenoid. So symptoms I had 2nd time round was did include the transmission slipping, followed by going into limp mode. Scanned it and it was solenoid 1 that was acting up when getting warm.

They said they can’t get a reading from the TCM. They said there is corrosion in one of the pin connectors. They want $1700 to just change out the TCM. I can a new one I programmed from the stealer for $675. Can they be programmed with the scanning program you mention in this post??
Can the pin connectors & socket be cleaned? Any help will be much appreciated!

Ofcourse, you can use contact cleaner to try clear the pins up. To program modules to your car you need NCS Expert but it does often come bundled with INPA. However, you really need to know what your are doing or else you could do more damage. The coding side is best left to someone who knows what they are doing.
