    I saw this movie when it first released in 1988 but it was in limited theaters. Three years later I enlisted in the Marine Corps, becoming a 0351 Antitank Assaultman. I trained on both the M47 Dragon and FGM-148 Javelin. I never fired either in combat. Although my brother in-law who was ex-Soviet Army and current Ukrainian Territorial Defense has two confirmed Russian tank kills with the Javelin.

    If I remember right, Dale said that they used a water loaded blank round, that was heavy enough to activate the recoil system and gave the nice smoke effect.

    • @MilitaryArmamentsCompany
      @MilitaryArmamentsCompany  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We used water charge rounds frequently, whilst they do create a recoil, this movie has substantial difference. They may have used a water charge, if they did the load was huge. Watch the village scene again, you can see a dust trail follow up along with the shot, leading us to believe it was a projectile.

      Yes it is a US .50 but in the film they have an ANm2 Aircraft. 50 which typically would not be correct for their ground tank, however with all the mods they did, it would make sense they stole one from a plane wreck.

    Unexpected but interesting idea for a show.
    Btw, not really related to the Tiran, but could the T-55's TPKU periscope be swapped out for a T-62's TKN-3, and vice versa?

    • @MilitaryArmamentsCompany
      @MilitaryArmamentsCompany  ปีที่แล้ว

      We looked into that heavily with ours, yes they will interchange however being a smoothbore with higher velocities, the ballistic data is different, requiring a different graticule pattern i would believe.

    • @tankolad
      @tankolad ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MilitaryArmamentsCompany Oh? That's very interesting, it makes me wonder why T-54/55s never received new commanders' periscopes. The graticules are fixed, rather than reflective of the ballistics of the gun, and would not need to be changed. To be completely sure - I'm referring to the commander's periscope, not the tank's sight (i.imgur.com/PAZmJLg.jpg)

    I'm curious what your take is on the technical accuracy of the misfiring main gun scene and it's associated procedures and drills ? Is it anywhere near what it's made out to be in the movie ?

    • @MilitaryArmamentsCompany
      @MilitaryArmamentsCompany  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      An interesting question with room for a big answer. The scene your referring to is reasonably accurate to represent some of the drills however there were some errors. Their procedure switching to manual fire was accurate. There are several conditions for a non firing gun. One is a simple miss fire, usually indicating a failure of the primer assembly or the guns firing mechanism malfunctioning. Non of this is a concern to bail out of the tank. Second is what's called a hang fire which reefer's to a delay in the powder train, I.E gunner pulls the trigger, gun does not fire immediately however seconds later the shot goes off. All malfunction drills involve buffer time to allow for a hang fire. Hang fire typically occurs within seconds. A hang fire cannot be distinguished from a Misfire until it happens therein lies the potential danger. A cook off is the dangerous malfunction in which they were referring to in the film. A cook off is defined as the actual explosive charge inside the warhead detonating inside the gun or any/ all of the powder train detonating. Typically however the concern of this happening is loading a round into a very hot gun, once the misfire drill is conducted and the round cannot be extracted out of the barrel or fired within a few minutes, it is at that point the crew is to bail out to sufficiently allow time for the barrel to cool down, several hours are suggested depending on the manual for the tank. The crew bailing out for a cook off with a cold gun during an ambush was where i believe the inaccuracy lies, however the film allowed this to demonstrate an in depth level of tank crew life not normally shown.

      @@MilitaryArmamentsCompany Very interesting, thank you. I've been fascinated with the switchology and procedures from Soviet/combloc armor (compared to NATOs) for a long time and that movie was the closest thing to a "technical reference" I had to work with until fairly recently.

    I found this channel looking for a review on the movie obviously not what i was looking for but i appreciate you making people aware of this movie and i hope people will go watch it great movie..on a side note the shells used where water filled to get that recoil effect and the dust coming out barrels when firing i hear is water vapor...i was also hoping you'd give some insight on the afghan tanker and what his role would be in the tank from my understanding Soviet tanks are cramped so crew size was 4 then later reduced to 3

    • @MilitaryArmamentsCompany
      @MilitaryArmamentsCompany  ปีที่แล้ว

      So we do ALOT of live fire as well as blank shots at events where projectiles would be dangerous. You can definitely get more recoil using water in the barrel but based off of what we have seen there seems to be a pretty good possiblility that they used actual live fire rounds (maybe chalk rounds) and then had explosives rigged up on the other end. Simply put I havent seen such realistic movement in the tanks characteristics unless its CGI ed .
      Generally speaking would have been there mostly as a translator to interact with locals since the Soviets likely would not have spoken the native language. Now as far as if those translators would have actually been located in the tank I am skeptical as this was likely done for "Movie Magic" and a more likely scenerario would have been that he would have been located in a combined arms convoy that would have had infantry and other supporting elements as well.
      And you are correct Soviet/Russian tanks did go from 4 to 3 but that didnt have to do with cramped conditions. With the invention of the auto loader with the T-64 that made the loaders position obsolete. It allowed for the gunner to be on one side and the crew commander on the other side. With the autoloader being added under the turret floor this allowed for the tank to not only be more lower profile (the crew is practically laying down in the T-72) but also made room for the autoloader.

    • @Irish37
      @Irish37 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the presence of Samad in the tank was a concession to movie-making. One could never squeeze five guys into the T-55 in any configuration, and you certainly wouldn't be able to operate the tank even if you could. I've been inside a T-55, and it's unbelievably cramped in there. There's no way a loader could have someone sharing that space with him, and still be able to access the ammunition rack and load the gun. I was a loader on the M1A1 Abrams, and even in the relatively spacious M1-series and loading from the left side of the breech, it's a difficult job. In the tiny space of the T-55, and on the right side of the breech, loading left-handed, it has to be miserable. The film is based on William Mastrosimone's play "Nanawatai!", and in the play, the tank is a T-72, which has a crew of only three, making the presence of Samad even more implausible. But it's a very small flaw in the best tank film ever made.

    The script was written by a CIA officer who observed the war with the Mujahedin. The reprisal attack on the village, killing prisoners by running them over with the tank, the low morale, even that the russians poisoned wells and didn't send out a rescue party when a tank got separated, is based in reality. It's as accurate a portrayal of the russian army as you're going to find.
