      Darrin Hill
      I first experienced Byron in the spring of '74 on an XR-75
      "Moto Mike" was the first to run Motosports Park (before Joe)
      He would sit on top of the sign in shack and read off riders meeting with a bullhorn
      He then moved on and ran Tipton Iowa
      And for the record, it wasn't saw dust rather wood chips in the back section ( the early 90's)
      That back berm was fuckin legendary (Byrons version of original Southwick)
      I loved watching Jim Veugeler, Bob Behrens, Jr. Jackson, Breck Powers DESTROY it
      That group were the only ones doubling the huge triple
      As for the Gary's school, I totally remember the "smack the hands" thing
      I also remember David being at the school in 1980 (#45 Kawasaki) and Gary having him lay his bike on the face of the uphill (trying to block the fast line) and the students would have to negotiate around his bike (find a fresh line)
      Here's one for the wayback machine - remember Maplehurst?

      Don't forget the value of cross training!! Trials bikes, singletrack, and even stand up jet skis. Standup jet skis are a great FUN way to stay in shape. Works similar muscle groups. Helps you get "smooth". And youre always getting a good workout swimming back to the ski every time you crash. No track fees, they dont eat tires/chains/pistons, and low injury risk! Hope he does well. 125 days are pivotal and fun times

      Something most of us consider a serious failure when it comes to moto style. The mechanic (or even Gary Bailey filming, who had a son with more style than nearly everyone else) must have received a death threat (after all his pants weren't on fire) just prior, to have let that slip. Probably the poor mechanic still can't stand being reminded, or maybe he's now that old guy you see at the local track whose goggles hang down and always have.

    To me, going fast on a race track is always more impressive than any tricks or flips. I always wondered how fast Travis could have been had he committed himself to it long term. We'll never know.

      @abracing199 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't think he has the attention span to buckle down to training for racing. Seems like his mind is best going in a million different directions, he's made a pretty good living of it.

      Imagine if all his achievements in freestyle motocross never happened. I agree that seeing his full potential in racing would have been very interesting but this man had so much more of an impact on fmx that racing never could. Can you ever imagine the double backflip being landed for the first time and it not be him? I can't!

    • @RileyTheGamer
      @RileyTheGamer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abracing199I agree but he also said he wasn’t willing to be an asshole. If he had friends that raced with him, he wanted to remain friends on the track. He wasn’t willing to do whatever it took to win. His quote was something like “Ricky Carmichael was willing to be an asshole and I wasn’t.” Essentially, he’s too nice. He felt bad if someone went down because of him. He wanted to be the nice guy and unfortunately nice guys finish last. He was a hell of a racer though. I feel like people took advantage of him being the “kid” of his era and would bully him around and he just got sick of it.
