Fantastic presentation. The explanation of the head was very helpful, and I think I'll be more open-minded to interpreting statues like this in the future.

It was buried again because she was recognized as a goddess by the many Aztecs that were left after the conquista. They would gather around it for countless hours and offerings started appearing close by. The Spanish didn't want none of that, Coatlicue had been replaced by the Virgin Mary.
Someone should make a video about why she was REALLY reburied. 😏

Yes. That is a deeply unplesant statue. Reallly amazingly designed though and as horrifying as it is as a statue I would love to see it animated it would make my blood chill if done just right.

wonderful!!! even really great with breaking down parts with being descriptive. I wish with others fears or other reason, wouldn't break or destroy and ruin history due to their belief. others of culture and even others not, but with historical/art minds would love or many thrive for these. terrible that destructive ways are in too many.
oh she is absolutely gorgeous, also fun fact: a rubber figure of coatlicue was made in the 'monster in my pocket' toyline, and its actually based upon this sculpture of her.
Unlike in European religions mesoamericans saw snakes are wise fortune tellers.
Rattlesnakes as well as other snakes warn you before they bite.
snakes were considered wise its the closest creature to the ground natives consider it the closest creature to mother earth that's why its in the statue

I am a novice in this subject, however I just thought that it may interest the researchers. There is a striking resemblance of this sculpture with "Chinna Masta" an avatar of goddess Kali of the Hindu Religion.
You may search Google and find out more. Chinna Masta means the beheaded one. Temple of this deity is found only in one temple at "Rajarappa" Jharkhand India.

@5:42 I highly doubt they re-buried this "because it was so terrifying". I think it's because the Spanish wanted to destroy the Aztec culture and religion as much as possible. If they were capable of violently destroying an entire civilization, were they really that terrified by a stone carving containing a snake's image?

Tonantzin is so metal. Such a beautiful monument. I learned the spanish used the virgin mary to replace Tanantzin ( they also did the same thing with many other gods) which aid the spanish to have more control over the people. Sad thing is this is not something that is taught in mexican schools.. kinda sad most people don't know the actual history and how important this monuments are.

this is not tonanztin. this coatlicue, a predecessor to her. tonanztin is only the light, motherly aspect represented in coatlicue.

Rocky Trifari yes. It was reburied over 200 years ago by the church because some people used to light candles to her. Today is exposed in a museum.
4 times. Mostly because church didn't want the "indians" come to offer cult to her. They were sneaking at nights to offer her their devotion, which was against their religious and political convenience. Coatlicue was the mother of life and dead, mother nature. Then she became Tonantzin and after Tonantzin they turned her into María Guadalupe which now is a huge and powerful image for latin american culture but mostly for mexicans.
