    Hi! I'm a casual recorder player and have been trying to play soprano venova for abt a year but still can't get it right. Unfortunately there aren't many venova tutorials and tips accessible (some I've found are in japanese and I can't understand anything). It would really make my day if you guys continue to cover venova related topics in your vids for beginner venova players 😁

    When I was choosing what instrument to learn I chose the recorder, because as much as I love the concept of Venova, it doesn't play in tune! You have to really control your breath etc to be able to play in tune. Even Jon is struggling!

I feel a bit overwhelmed and thought my venova buy was impulsive. But I am happy to have watched your video. I have also been learning how to play a recorder! Interesting I think Jon sounds a bit better than most saxophone players on this instrument, I reckon its because he also plays the clarinet. I think we have yet to hear this instrument at its full potential, because that would require like three hours per day of practice over a number of years + no one really knows what the ideal tone might be. Also, a double lip embouchure is going to be possible but not many people have gone down this route on single reeds (not in modern times anyway). This is one of the best videos I have seen though as most are either by people that don't really know what they are doing, or they are professional sax players or whatever and slag the instrument for its perceived faults. This is a very good instructional video, I'm tempted to get one, but not before I have many more scales etc under my belt on the saxophone (being fairly new to the sax).

    Just got a soprano venova and I've been playing it for a few days. The keys are a bit different on mine; it doesn't have that F/F♯︎ key with the hole in it, just two split keys for the bottom four holes, and finger holes for all the rest. It's definitely an interesting instrument, and this was a great tutorial. I haven't played a recorder in about 30 years, and I'm completely new to reed instruments. I'm getting a kind of buzzing, vibrating sound with some of the lowest notes at the moment, which probably has something to do with my embouchure, and maybe the positioning of the reed. I'm sure that will work out with practice, and getting used to the instrument over time. It would be great if you can do some more videos on the venova in the future.

    • @Laogeodritt
      @Laogeodritt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I like the Venova but I find its marketing questionable as something "anyone can learn to play with ease"-it seems like a new-age clarinet/sax in terms of technical difficulty. I can certainly see it as a "casual" instrument for an experienced amateur or professional single-reed player, though-at that price and size, it's certainly easy to carry around just for a casual jam or as a novelty if you don't want to lug your good alto sax around, for instance.

    Although considered a harder instrument, I find the Bb clarinet easier to play than tenor recorder and I'm a low brass player that's just starting on reeds. Still dabble in alto recorder and just got a new "darker" mouthpiece to give saxophone another shot as I found its tone too bright.

      Cigarette paper is the traditional cleaning material for pads. Regarding Venova, I play clarinet and sax a bit, and I also have a soprano Venova. It is very difficult to play and it doesn't sound that good. A soprano saxophone is much easier to play and sounds much better. It is difficult to think of my Venova as anything but a waste of money at this point.
      I'm generally a big fan of innovation in musical instruments and I wanted to love the Venova. I think there are some great ideas in its design, but the final product, at least in the case of the soprano instrument, is disappointing. I would like to see more instruments based on this concept, but the first iteration is a failure to my mind.

    Can you please provide tips for players with underbites?
    The biggest hindrance in playing wind and reed instruments is having a bad embouchure... so, if there's tips on how to adapt to irregular shaped mouth, it would help make the instruments more popular!

    • @Team_Recorder
      @Team_Recorder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a really good question! Will get back to you.. any reed players with input?

    • @kairinase
      @kairinase 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Team_Recorder I didn't know any to be honest.
      I'm asking because I have an underbite. It doesn't show much, but when I have to put something like a thermometer, lolipop or a whistle, I struggle to keep it in.
      After watching your videos on flute, clarinet and saxophone, it made me feel like people with irregular shaped mouths are a little bit left out of the woodwind and reed instruments scene.
      I plan on trying clarinet or venova next, but I'm thinking twice because of my condition, cause those things cost a lot and I don't want it to go to waste when it won't fit well in my mouth.
      Then, there are those who have given up halfway through... People who have learnt it when they're small but quit when they have some dental problem growing up, or after having an injury.
      It would be great to get a dentist that plays woodwind or reed instruments to show how an embouchure works and a real life case of a musician having to cope with dental problem growing up or after having an accident.
      Maybe this could bust the myth I've heard about having an underbite or an overbite would make a person sing better,(think of Freddy Mercury) but, it makes it harder to learn woodwind and reed instruments.
      I hope by looking at this issue, it would help many people to weigh the choice of musical instruments for their children, and would make those who have lost their hope rekindle it again!
      Thanks in advance.

      People said the same thing about the saxophone when it was invented, but it's not an "imitation clarinet", it's a hybrid of a clarinet and a horn. Likewise, the venova is a hybrid of a saxophone and a recorder; it's not trying to be anything else. I've tried playing a clarinet and I found it much, much harder than the venova. So in that way, I think it would appeal more to beginners than other reed instruments, because the fingerings are simpler.
