    I didn't know there was a version of "Hot Cross Buns" that actually has a nice tune instead of the 3-note (B-A-G) version that we learn here in the U.S! If recorder classes were to show this video on the first day, more people might realize that the recorder isn't just a toy or noisemaker and actually appreciate it, and some of the kids might be more inspired to take it seriously!

      @@mattmilford8106Levei 1 was the Hot Cross Buns I learned in primary school many years ago in the UK. The B-A-G version is so lame.

    As a retired elementary music teacher, having taught Hot Cross Buns countless times (and as recorder being my main instrument) that was SO fun and gratifying to watch! Thank you for your creativity and musicianship and for brightening up my recorder soul!

    Blown away at the contemporary version. After listening to nearly all of it, I could see the note simply labeled as "burble" quickly approaching, and I was like "Dear Lord, what's that gonna sound like?"

  • @Bladavia
    @Bladavia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    I feels like these "contemporary" techniques would actually sound really nice with folksy traditional pieces. They sound kinda wild and tribal.

    • @Team_Recorder
      @Team_Recorder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Oh yes, that's why I put 'contemporary' in quotations marks - I'm sure all of these techniques have been in use for as long as recorders have existed!

    You know, I started playing along, and at Level 4 you had me worrying: OMG, what's she gonna do next? Didn't expect French Baroque and laughed so hard I dropped my recorder.
    Level 6 and 7 went even beyond that :-D

    The melodic rendition is my favourite. I heard no 'hot cross buns' in the French baroque version however I really like the tune. I find the contemporary version quite funny and level 7 is simply for the genius Sarah! What a wonderful compilation altogether.

    In a way, I can't blame people for feeling that way about the recorder when all they get is one unit of recorder during a single year of school, with some students only ever learning three notes. If it were integrated throughout their school music and students had a chance to get more advanced on the instrument, I don't think it would have the same reputation it does.

    • @norikosato7823
      @norikosato7823 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. And if all the music teachers (or teachers who teach music...sometimes they are not real music teachers) know more about recorder...if at least they had knowledge, if not skills.

    Sarah's technical and expressive abilities are remarkable. As far as levels and thus difficulties are concerned, higher levels do not always correspond to liking and pleasing listening, but those who manage to perform at these high levels have added value.

    You know, it's something beautiful you've done the french baroque version is so gorgeous (I will apreciate if you could share it with me), but the olny easy here is the 1st level, the 2nd requires god breath control and others are still more difficult, no like cross bunny original)

    I had forgotten that version of HCB with more than B A G notes! Question, I’ve seen other UK musicians using ‘8th note’ instead of ‘quaver’ on TH-cam; do you do that to be understood by a wider (US) audience, or is there a trend to use those terms in the UK as well which I missed? (I’m comparing it with other fields such as accounting which are increasingly replacing UK terms with US ones, eg CEO instead of MD.)

    Do you have a tutorial on how to play a note from high D to high C as uninterrupted note? The problem I have is that to get to the C fingering, it means removing my finger from the top hole and placing in on the second hole.. I have the same problem when using an EWI.. I can't figure out the way to transition those two notes without a small gap..

    You sneaky sneak! You're just making us practice the scales and jumps! You Van Eyke you!
    I never was taught recorder in school so I never had that mental barrier to start with it (thankfully). But now that I mention to people and oh my gawd I totally empathize with your situation in general now. It does have a bad reputation and mostly cause of very vocal traumatized Americans.
