    @Mortismal Gaming: Super important information for getting this game to 100% on the PC (I did it like a year ago): The game's cache is deleted everytime you exit the game. Unfortuntately, this resets the achievement progress. Several achievements like the ones for picking locks, digging treasures, finishing quests and most importantly killing enemies (2000 needed) have to occur in one sitting, for the respective achievement to pop. It is possible to reload a save in front of a dig site to farm the 50 chests, same goes for the other achievements. But you must not exit the game in between, otherwise you'll have to start from scratch. I needed like 4-5 hours to grind the achievement for 2000 kills, which was best done when you are really strong, using muskets on the stormisland. Good luck!

    One of the things I love about console gaming is that you never really need to worry about doing special stuff to get old games to run. It is either added to backwards compatibility and runs or it isn't on console.

    A big difference to Gothic I + II and to a lesser degree Risen I is that you have a companion from the start, which lets you kill absolutely everything from the very start of the game. You also don't run into raptors or trolls early on and get eaten within seconds, because you thought exploring the forest at lvl 1 is a great idea.
    Which ruins one of the biggest selling points that these game have to me. The world doesn't feel hostile and uncaring. It feels like a roller coaster ride.

    I am actually really looking forward to this review, this game has been a major inspiration for me as a developer.
    One thing I LOVE about Risen 2 is the strong identity it has. Not only are it’s characters memorable, but so are it’s locations.
    I am actually developing a game heavily inspired by what Risen 2 did right, so I’d love for you to take a look after you’ve finished a play through so I can get some fresh insights into how the system could be improved through a different lens.
    Right now I have a fully developed naval system & I am currently working on the open world & combat. So again, if you’re interested at all please get in touch!

    Heyo Mortym! Love Piranha Bytes' games, especially Gothic 1&2, Risen 1, and Elex. Risen 2 is quite a bit different from Risen 1 in terms of gameplay, but I found it kinda fun even with the usually PB jank. If the devs had tightened up the combat a bit, it could have been a lot better.

    The first time I finished Risen 2, I started off by hacking my character using the console to abstract the rough build I had at the end of the first game. Doing that, I had alot of fun in the game, and find that this game had the best story in the trilogy. In your 100% I strongly recommend doing something like that on one or two of your playthroughs to compare the experience, given how much clunkier the game feels than the Gothic games prior to leveling.
    That said. I found the parry system in Risen 1 immensely playable, and the melee in Risen 2 lacking without hacking this, so YMMV.
    This MAY work as well for R3, but the games do not share a protagonist, so I did not do it there.
    As always with this series I recommend comparing/contrasting dubs as well.

    I personally enjoyed Risen 2. It felt to me that PB was kind of in a rutt of trying to recreate the same game over and over again, with Risen 1 being sort of in the uncanny valley of being Gothic while not being Gothic. Risen 2 was a brand new thing, new style, new setting. It was fresh. Of course if you're stuck in the past yourself, you won't like that (although to be fair there are more substantial criticisms of R2) but whether you felt the execution was well done or not, that attempt of growth and moving on was sorely needed.

    • @Stefan-xt5sk
      @Stefan-xt5sk ปีที่แล้ว

      It was decent, but it didn't grip me as much as Gothic 1+2 and Risen 1 did. In retrospect, I'm sad that it seems PB lost their courage to try something new and commit to it after Risen 2.
      Gothic 3 tried something big and it was a mess that got backlash from the community.
      Risen 1 was a step back, but more polished and generally liked.
      Risen 2 innovated again, which wasn't well received, so Risen 3 changed the setting to be more like Gothic again. Elex 1 and 2 are also compromises. It's sci-fi, but with fantasy! It's still like Gothic and going back to the roots! They are hiding change like a disgusting pill in delicious food and the combination kind of makes me resent both a bit more each time.

    • @hanli5416
      @hanli5416 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally i would prefer pathfinder wrath more system wise. If you are an old head like i am rpg wise and more accustomed to gold box rpgs and ad&d and bg1 and bg2 i feel the system in pathfinder games is more familiar than both wasteland and divinity.
      One small caveat though, the first few runs on pathfinder i am assuming you kinda stick to singleclassing just to get to know the system well. The customization options multiclass wise and level dipping for max munchkinning is making the system a lot more complex then the games of old.

    I really enjoyed all their previous games but Risen 2 seems to me to be the beginning of the end. The overall lack of polish and, more importantly, lack of ideas led to a simplified game that takes the worst aspects of Gothic 3 and combines them with a completely new level of bad in terms of writing, story, world design, quest design.
    I just hate the combat and I believe that you will too once you reach the final boss. I would see it as acceptable if not for the animations - everything feels floaty, a bit unresponsive and animations lack weight.
    But I agree that guns are fun adition and with that the game feels a bit like alpha build of Bloodborne.
    PS: I played this on release, it is quite possible that the game has been patched up and improved heavily, as is often the case.

    I feel like R2 and R3 melee combat was so bad I would rather focus on magic and firearms... didn't like enemies randomly dashing at me. And I've played Risen1 a bunch of times, don't remember such issues. At least gold is scarce, which is quite a rarity in RPGs.

      Risen 3 suffers a lot because a large part of the game are the 3 main islands for the main factions, which are all the same difficulty... meaning you're going to be way overleveled for most of it and it's just one big chore to go through.

    Shoot!
    Believe it or not I'm playing through 2 these days as well. It doesn't feel as good as Risen 1 so far and I'm not a big fan of the very bright sunny weather in the game by day as the brightness felt kinda high in comparison to 1 and 3.
    I am also not very pleased with how they handled the Inquisition in 2 as since the get go, it feels they lost lots of the atmosphere they had in Risen 1
    However, the story, interactions and skills are quite interesting so far especially skills like the monkey.
    Some cool concepts there as well as some comedic encounters that gives this game its own charm so far for me.
    I'm interested to see your final thoughts about it later on.
    On a side off topic note, have you tried a mmorpg called Dungeons and Dragons online yet?
    Its a somewhat old dnd dungeon crawler MMORPG with all the dnd stuff we are used to see in CRPGs (like damage in dice, DCs, skill checks, disarming traps and detecting hidden doors, etc).
    Well except it has no evil alignments and has most focus on the dungeon crawl than roleplay and dialogue say like something a bit like Icewind Dale may be.
    They're also giving away most of its quest packs for free these days till April the 23rd
    Seeing as you seem to possibly love CRPGs the most, I thought I'd bring DDO up eventhough its an MMO.

      As you have played through the games, I have a question. In any of the games, is there a level cap of any kind or can you max your character out?

    • @ilovebiscuits7771
      @ilovebiscuits7771 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Blasted2Oblivion I've finished 1 and 3 a good while back so about builds, I can't recall much but as far as I remember, Risen games, like gothic games, tend to encourage you to specialize in certain weapon roles rather than being all over the place.
      For example, in Risen 1, I went as a melee inquisitor with staff and that's all I focused on. The staff levels as well as some stealth stuff like the sneak and pickpocket, etc
      Generally, your faction plays a big role on which skills you can access and max easier too and that's even more in Risen 3 where I played as a demon hunter which were more of a warrior faction (felt a bit like playing a death knight of sorts). Generally, I tend to go for roguish or warrior classes in the Piranha Bytes games so I can't tell you much about magic.
      Also, the thing with maxing is the piranha byte games tend to feel more limited in mobs and its exp than something like say Skyrim. While being open world and full of side quests and things to explore, the overall experience tends to feel more railed than a sandbox openworld experience so that in itself can be a limiting factor as by the time you finish the game, you'll most likely have only maxed only the skills you specialized in.
      Also, worth noting that in Risen 1, melee specially the classic one handed and board has an advantage due to how the final boss fight works which is one of the biggest critiques against Risen 1
      Interms of crafts, I tend to specialize in 1 which tends to be alchemy for the str potions or gutting animals for extra golds
      On Risen 2, I'm going for a firearm inquisitor with stealth/thievery skills like pickpocket and the monkey.

    • @Blasted2Oblivion
