The press and mainstream media will call Labour to task and expect change. They never question the Conservatives

We need press & media reform as well as electoral reform, and we need it urgently!
The same media that gives Farage all press he needs but fails to give anyone else that been putting MPs on to the commons even a minute
I’ve said it for years, Labour is held to incredibly high standards and woebetide if they fall short. Tories being crooked, self serving and useless is fully expected so they have to be particularly atrocious for people to sit up and take notice.

I don't think there has ever been a time in history when a 7x failed MP and his party is interviewed more than any other party in the country. It is bizarre and shows we need to have changes to media, it is no wonder that reform get a boost when he's on TV more, his support has been largely manufactured by the media giving him much more platform than any metric shows he deserves and never even giving mild push back or even devil's advocate.

Why is Farage still here? He said he would leave if Brexit was a failure. He has acknowledged exactly that. So why hasn’t he left.

No, Farage won't be a significant noise if he gets a seat in Clacton. He got was a member of the European Parliament and was widely ignored. Farage is at best a heckler. You can choose to ignore him, he has no real power other than being a nuisance. He wouldn't know what to do with real power.
Farage has very little to say, so Marr suggesting he will be a nuisance at PM questions every week is a bit much.
What concerns me is that many of us thought the same in the context of the Brexit referendum, and look what happened there.
Not sure it makes sense to ignore Nigel’s rhetoric to the extent he represents the views of voters who feel they are ignored … regardless of their views.
Democracy doesn’t always result in positive economic or progressive social outcomes - eg 1930s Germany, modern Russia, modern South Africa, modern India etc are all democracies.
The problem is that even if reform get one seat, Farage will still get more coverage in the bias right wing media than all other political parties
I think Farages power will come from across the Atlantic. A Trump win will be very interesting in terms of his relationship with the UK and his mate Farage.
Agreed. Similar as not having heard much from George Galloway since he became MP. They’ll be sitting in silence in parliament and try stir up noise with interviews. He’ll be irrelevant with at max a handful of his own party MPs.

In 2011, 67.9% of people rejected an Alternative Vote in a referendum (turnout 42%). I am aware that AV is not PR.

I agree absolutely but I fear that whilst Labour are a massive improvement on the Tories with their policies, their democratic intentions are little different. Neither leadership wants to give up their absolute power when in office.
Farage will only be as big as the media make him. Right now he is talked about as much as the main parties and is interviewed more, even though polls have him 1 3rd of labour, even though there party did terribly in the local elections and the lib dems who came second can only get 10 second mention if they canoe off of a waterfall. It is the media's constant overhyped of him and lack of pushback that pushes reform to have so many votes.
Because he gets clicks, it's that simple. The media doesn't care about fairness or being accurate, they care about clicks.

If they are anything like the last labour government which wasn't perfect, but everything was better. The average disposable income was £11,000 a year compared to today. The NHS was the considered one of the best healthcare systems on the planet and there was huge investment in education. Low child poverty etc.

Then they opened the floodgates to rub our noses in diversiteeee. And the NHS is overwhelmed as our our schools, housing. Life was better in 1997. I was in my twenties and living in my own property. Not many twentysomethings could do that now.

@@Steve-fk1jg because it was worse than a few years prior, they were blamed for the global recession, people believed the economically illterate position that you need austerity after and during a recession. Not to mention no party got a majority.
Schools were underperforming, child poverty was worse, and the health care system was reviewed by independent think tanks that Labour set up and paid to give positive reviews, the reality is the open borders system crashed the NHS, schools, dentists and all the other free services due to an increase 10,000 x demand.

Because of Brexit we lost our freedom to live, work, retire and study visa free in 27 member states and this is not an option. But then you knew that didn’t you?

It's journalists inflating Farage beyond his actual power again, these people are constantly boosting him beyond what he's actually accomplished.
I think there are many things the British public would be willing to accept because it makes their lives better. For example a Labour government might adopt a number of EU regulations on the pollution of our rivers, lakes and seas. The Water companies are already deeply despised for the way they have been dumping raw sewage and using failing infrastructure as an excuse. The very infrastructure they have been saying for years is the reason for our high water bills. While the Brexiteers have for years blamed the EU for every ill in this country, Labour could blame those private companies for the damage they have caused and use the EU as an example of how they can give us clean water. We don't have to say it's from the EU just that we are copying what they do. When people see an improvement they don't really care where it came from.
As more and more things are copied people will begin to ask why are the EU coming up with better ideas than us. This will change the negative impression of the EU that has been spread for years which will then lead to people been open to other changes.
The LD would get no coverage if Ed Davies wasn't paddle boarding or taking amusement park rides.
Because they're the Tories biggest threat in southern England. So the Tory media is hoping that if they ignore them, people won't vote for them. Kinda like the producers of IACGMOOH not giving someone screen time, because they don't want them to win

The electorate will expect a new government and do the only sensible thing, which is to get the UK back into the EU as soon as possible. I'd also look into the prosecutions of those who funded the campaign of sheer lies that conned fools and bigots into voting leave. Thankfully many of them will have died since the vote, the young who have been betrayed by the vote and denied free movement in Europe will want to see their rights restored pronto.
The UK is not going back into the European Union because we in the 27 member states will NEVER unanimously vote to accept your application.
We're never going back in because that would be completely undemocratic and its actually a disgrace for any British citizen to go against a democratic vote. Unless we had another referendum (which you would lose again). Its been 8 years.

European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic already told the UK back in 2023 that it would be just that: reviewing the implementation of the deal rather than wholesale changes. Mr Sefcovic said customs checks at the border would likely remain but stressed the TCA had not been used to its “full potential”. He said the review doesn’t constitute a commitment to reopen the TCA or to negotiate supplementary agreements. “The TCA will simply not be able to recreate any kind of notion of the Single Market.” In other words: no more cherry-picking for the UK.

Not very much different. I’m not impressed with the Labour front bench I think they will be more managerial then anything else. People expect Labour to be radically reforming in government. Marr is correct, there is no way back in to EU for Britain except the Single Market. We pay for the club but can not vote or make rules for the club.

Isn't an " Association Agreement" similar to the " Memoranda of Understanding" that Tories trumpet about having with a couple of US States, who do NOT make independent trade deals? Association agreements with the EU have much more economic impact than a MoU with Florida.

So large numbers of people won't have their views represented in Parliament, tell us something new. Large numbers of people oppose Privatisation of the Utilities and the Railways, the selling of Council Houses and the Royal Mail but they were pushed through by the Torys. So why is this now such a big deal now it looks like there'll be a Labour government.

These are more reasons for stammer to have addressed this proactively.
And millions of people have felt they are not represented at every election in their life time, so why is it suddenly an issue now? Purely because the media love Nigel and his 'engagement'. He's 'one of them', goes to the same clubs, knows all the right people because of his privileged background. However, if he does end up leading some sort of campaign for electoral reform, I might have to give him credit for doing one useful thing in his career.

One thing that might happen, is you might get some odd renationalisations, but that´s partly because quite a lot of railway companies are not doing that great and at least one of the water companies might go bust.

Farage is influential because he has been given a vast amount of airtime, even long before 2016. More appearances on QT than anyone else, by a very long way.
Free Movement can be negotiated. Hospitality, the health service they need workers, so why don't we do a year visa free and allow people to try and get a job, if they succeed they will need to use a unique residence card ( lots of countries have them). They may have to pay more tax and vice versa but at least Brits get opportunities again. Do not listen to Farrage he caused all this.
Who would move to pay more tax than doing the same job??? Seriously, they already have to pay £600 odd to the NHS fund without paying higher taxes. Nobody will go. Not a hope.

@@MrGCB Eh so am I…again I say why would a foreigner go to the uk currently. They’re not wanted by a huge amount of people, they have to pay an NHS charge of £600 approximately. You’d give them a free visa and then charge more them more tax to do the same job? Seriously, am I missing something here? Why would they come?

BBC Radio 4 mentioned the rise of the Far Right 42 times yesterday.
Finding Andrew's argument that the algorithm media use to determine airtime is a bit odd. Not that he's wrong, but this has been the case election after election since the Liberal-SDP Alliance in the 1980s. Why now but not then?
It's a shame that Andrew Marr didn't actually anawer the question about why Farage seems to get quite a lot of slots on the news and radio shows. He, as yet, is unelected, perhaps that will change though.

It did under the last Labour government. By all measurable factors the Blair/Brown government was the most successful since world war 2. Yes, the fertility rate means either some immigration (but not as high as the Tories or Reform would have - that's what the rich who support those 'parties' want to create mass unemployment). So less immigration.
No PFI contracts - it was a bad idea when the Tories brought it in, and it was a bad idea when Labour continued with it. Fortunately, Labour has learned from that. Reform, on the other hand, being financed by the very rich, may well have to pay them back if ever they got into government.
Labour was too Right-wing under Blair. Again, they oppose deregulation, but it's a Right-wing idea supported by those who got rich from the money markets - Farage and Sunak.
