    I love how George is some goofball who manages to constantly fail at everything in life then just confidently walks up and hits 3 balls out of the park like it’s nothing

    According to Google, this episode aired on November 21st, 1996. The Yankees won the world series on October 26th, 1996 meaning they had to have recorded this episode only a couple days after winning the world series. Legendary.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Or more likely they recorded it before the world series, but recorded 2 slightly different scenes, one for if they won it, and one for if they lost it, and then only played the correct one and threw the other one away.
      Like when Rudy Giuliani was on Seinfeld. They recorded the episode before he'd been officially elected mayor of NYC. So they recorded scenes with both the two front runners for mayor, and then only used the one that had the winner in it, Giuliani, and threw the other one away.
      But it's a good thing the Yankees did win the world series as it makes this scene even funnier, with the 6 games comment, and just the general ridiculousness of some random bozo trying to teach the world champions how to play.
      The whole George working for the Yankees story arc seemed to be all about if one of those people who always whines and says they know way more than the actual managers and coaches and players, and they say "if they gave me any MLB team to coach I'd win the world series in 4 years with them, it's easy", was actually given that chance. Like george thinks he knows more than the actual coaching staff do, like every fan seems to think about themselves, but this way his ideas actually came to fruition, e.g. the episode where they switch to pure cotton uniforms. And it of course backfires and it turns out there's a good reason they don't use cotton anymore. That sort of thing
      Plus we got to see his dad yell at George Steinbrenner for trading away Jay Buhner who then ended up having multiple amazing seasons with the Mariners (including 3 consecutive years he hit at least 40 homers). Like, every fan wants to yell at their team's owners. There's practically zero popular sports team owners in the world, they're all hated for something. So that's seeing a normal fan get to yell at the people they always want to shout at but never normally get a chance.
      Really it was Larry David all along. He wanted an excuse to meet these players and yell at them and at Steinbrenner for trading away Buhner and so on. All of that stuff, cos he's a massive Yankees fan in real life. He went to the trouble of making the top sitcom in America just for an excuse to meet the team and yell at them lol.
      He still does it, in Curb Your Enthusiasm. He takes any chance he can get to get sports star cameos. He even created the redemption of bill buckner, absolving Buckner of the guilt for that missed ball that went through his legs and cost the red sox a world series. Even though Larry is an enormous Yankees fan he still felt bad for a red sox player, and so redeemed him by getting buckner to catch a baby thrown from the top floor of a tall building, as you do.
      And he had Shaq on for a whole episode where Larry accidentally breaks Shaq's leg. He's always finding one excuse or another to meet his sports heroes, and I'm all for it. I think any big sports fan would do that if they could.

    Still amazing how, following the "6 games" comment, the Yankees would 3-peat from 1998-2000, and not a single one of those World Series went past Game 5. The first two were sweeps.

    Lol I know I'm overthinking and it's a show but I've long had a headcanon that George had a small career in the minors prior to the series beginning, explaining his hitting talent, the fact that Tartabull is willing to consider batting advice from him, his competitiveness in The Understudy, and Veronica being able to get him the interview with NYY.

      This episode was also referenced in an episode of Curb, when after it's brought up that Jeter was in a Seinfeld episode, the stonemason started yelling down the phone to Larry that Derek Jeter was the most overrated player etc. Somehow it's made it out that Larry was the asshole in that situation which makes no sense. But I guess everyone hates the Yankees regardless of the context of the conversation you're having
