      FYI: Rostov-On-Don is recorded as being the hometown to one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. Reportedly around 500,000 bodies are buried there, and up to 50 new corpses are added to it each day. Just thought you'd like to know that.

      Love that DX 200. I had one. Not the best receiver. But sure is pretty.
      My first “real” communication receiver about 10 years ago. I later got the DX-394. Stable but not better.
      Hope you enjoy it. 👌🏻

    They've had the 2-tone marker for weeks, so it's not connected to the recent events. I was monitoring Pip during the coup, but observed no unusual activity (there could've been, I just probably didn't catch it).
    Squeaky Wheel changes the marker tone between 2, 3, and rarely 4-tone almos every year. The most likely reason for this is that the marker generator breaks down, and they don't fix it, just change it with a spare one. They also reverted to an earlier tone after having a different one for years.
    Also in the recent years they were doing "rounds" with relaying Monolith messages. The whole message chain was triggered by a solely CW transmission using callsign WEGI on multiple frequencies, then Pip was next with a voice and CW, then Buzzer with voice and CW, then Squeaky Wheel with voice (and presumably CW, we've never found their CW freq), and Volnushka-7 with voice on 4467 kHz. There were occaisonal other channels joining the chain of Monolith propagation, such as air defense frequencies, or ones that only sent network tests on a daily basis.
    These rounds might happen these days still, so if you happen to catch a Monolith on either the Pip or Buzzer, quickly switch to the Wheel, you'll probably hear a message there as well. Best to try this on Thursdays, Buzzer sends 70-80% of the messages that day.

    I wonder if the change in tone is to indicate that the channel is now in an "active" rather than "standby" state, to alert receiver equipment and/or military listeners that the frequency should be monitored constantly.

    Hey Lewis, wanted to say thanks for putting this out there and keeping your ear in the skies. I really dig the pictures of the radio towers, when I was a lad in the late 1970s and early 1980s during the peak of the cold war, I'd tune my old Heathkit HW-101 ( it was SSB/CW only) to these creepy numbers stations and being that I could only hear the sideband of these stations made it even more creepy. I'd have my imagination running wild , thinking of dark radio towers sending signals through the foggy hills and valleys ... and spies huddled over their receivers in a dark room filled with cigarette smoke and empty bottles of vodka on the floor. LOL now I'm in my 50s and it still creeps me out a little bit but now that it's demystified it doesn't keep me awake at night. with my own radio that glowed in the dark from the tubes. ha ha ha! very cool stuff though- keep it up really enjoying every bit of your work. 73 - oh and BTW , the clip of the old Realistic DX-200 was epic! that rig is cherry! does it belong to you? I've caught some of these signals here in the states, but conditions have been lousy and when they are good, I'm working DX as much as possible. .... again 73 dit dit

    So after watching many, if not all, of your number station videos over the last year or so. I dug out my Sangean ATS 909. ( kept for SHTF) I strung up the antenna that came with it, checked the battery, and now I'm waiting for this evening to see what I can find. Boy from Stockport living in Slovakia 😊

  • @Steve-GM0HUU
    @Steve-GM0HUU ปีที่แล้ว +12

    👍Thanks for video. My guess is that the tones are just a channel marker to allow receiving stations to tune in and monitor the frequency. Why they change? Best guess is some kind of alert level or maybe the old tone generator broke. Not a very advanced system on the face of it. However, you only need an inexpensive shortwave receiver to listen to transmissions. Therefore, any Russian agent operating, say in the UK, just needs to go to Argos and buy a shortwave receiver. Basically, the agent can access receiving equipment easily without arousing suspicion. The agent can also listen to messages without being detected (e.g. unlike messages sent to a mobile phone, via Internet, post or drop locations). In fact, when messages are broadcast we don't even know which country or countries they are destined for let alone who.

  • @kaitlyn__L
    @kaitlyn__L ปีที่แล้ว +6

    What I find most interesting is the old squeaky wheel and the recent pre-replacement one _were_ playing the same notes, albeit at a slightly different tempo and in a slightly different order. It almost sounds like the original was analogue-sequenced (by turning a few knobs) and the oscillator had a fairly high “slew” time. The pre-replacement modern one by contrast sounds very digitally sequenced and synthesised - clear sharp delineation of notes, and never any wobble in the pitch of each note.

    Perhaps there are custom electronics that are used to detect these various tones to provide an 'online' status - so maybe the signal has only changed due to newer hardware being rolled out to receivers? I doubt it's a dead man's switch - it'd be too easy for an enemy to broadcast an identical signal.

    I'm not sure, if following has to do with the change, but Russian authorities are summing all personnel and military to leave Zaporizhia power plant, before July 5th, security agencies are afraid that Russia decides to blow up the whole plant. Just like they did with the dam. This can trigger an Armageddon, because three NATO country's could be affected with nuclear fall out. And that would be a violation from chapter 5 of NATO. Let's hope Russians come to their senses, not to do this. So it's maybe a good idea to follow this up closely?

    Hearing the "New" Squeaky wheel Signal , (3:54) gave me a Flashback to the time when i lived in Moscow in 1987, i was only 4 at the time and was asleep in my bedroom, i remember vaguely that it was raining, and i lived in a twelfth floor Flat in Lensky Prospect Mira. I cannot remember the time i heard it, and it really creeped me out. However, the tone that i heard was at least a pitch lower, and it sounded more like a boop than a beep followed by static. so thanks for the flashback.

The tone change could be as simple as an equipment update, or maybe they changed to something that is cheaper to run 24/7 than the other system. It doesn't appear any of those changes have links to real life activities, other than upgrades or equipment changes at the transmission sites.

      @@Redneckmowers it's just the way they're designed, but designed with a purpose.
      A SW radio with no band switch and tunes in 1kh steps with an analog frequency display is pretty hard to tune as the frequencies are so jam packed together and it takes very fine movement of the tuning dial. Having SW band splits makes it far easier to tune as it spreads the frequencies out more from each other. this is how SW manufactures get around the issue without drastically increasing cost.
      There are some SW receivers with a digital display that can tune in steps that still has band splits mainly just for looks.

    I saw elsewhere that a new Torpedo was tested in Russia very recently, allegedly. Perhaps it’s “yay our outdated and often wonky military tech didn’t pollute another stretch of land for 20,000years” ? 🤣🧐 either way. I’ll be having a listen for this later old chap.
