What I love most about the Alpha is that the moving shadows at 3:08 is actually the shadow of an Amygdala clinging to a building. Only, we wouldn't be able to actually see them that early in the game. But imagine going back to Central Yharnam after gaining enough insight and you find out that the Amygdala had been watching you as early as the starting area.
yeah it's a shame they removed her. it was probably meant to be an gaster egg for the aloha but I wished it stayed as something you see only with enough insight like the Odeon Chapel Amygdalas.
Alpha had more complex shadow, final had more detail. I think they changed it because of the framerate might be worse if they were to use Alpha's shadow effects.

To this day, I'm still waiting for a sequel or a simple update to this game. Bloodborne is magnificent, beautiful and very addictive! Best From Software game ever.
It seems like with the alpha version they decided to go with the 'Eldritch theme' from the start whereas the final started with the 'beasts and blood' aesthetic.
Wow, so much more contrast and visibility in the Alpha version. I always find myself squinting when I'm playing bloodborne as it as, as almost everything is in grey tones. I would've loved some more visibility like in the Alpha version. Edit: It's actally insane how much easier on the eye the Alpha version is.
I love the Alpha version's lights, but I agree with the final version. It lends itself to being gloomier and ominous. The Alpha lighting looks almost like Irythyl. Which isn't bad at all, just a different mood
What I keep noticing with the alpha's lighting is that the bright areas are bright and the dark areas are dark. In the final this spread has been crunched and while there are shadows they aren't as dark and while there are bright areas they aren't as bright. This overall tends towards a more monochrome color scheme of grey and brown. Foreground and background don't stand out as much from each other in the final and so when you're looking at objects in the distance everything tends to blend together into one plane. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it irks me.
@ladyabaxa I concur! The contrast in the final version is not as good as the Alpha version. I may even add that the Alpha version had like this greenish glow on the rocks/bricks, which makes them seem more mysterious and oneiric as opposed to the grayish final look... which is fine but doesn't quite capture that mysterious vibe. Materials also had better glossiness, but that is probably because if the final version had that kind of gloss it would probably run like at 15 fps hah, same with the fog. Overall we got a masterpiece of a game but comparing these aspects of the alpha version, I can't help but feel I would have love to see a mix of both.
It's hard for me to decide which looks better. Really, I think they are just different, one isn't superior to the other. It is still fascinating to see just what all the devs decided to change in-between the alpha and the final product.
The Alpha makes certain places look kind of "cleaner" than the Final, especially on the Central Yharnam ladder, you can just see everything above. Personally more of a fan of the polluted-looking fog covering the areas above, makes it feel like everything's gone to shit. Alpha looks more ethereal, mysterious, but Central Yharnam isn't really ethereal. It would work better for areas like Bergenwerth, where you get into the arcane.
I agree. The alpha version has a more regal, royal sheen to the texture of, well, everything. It's not as horrifying to look at, unlike the final version which nails down how bad Yahrnam is. But the fog... the fog is thicker and I like it that way. The thick fog of the alpha brings out that cheap jumpscare horror that I know and love. However, the amount of shadows in the final version concerns me how much they have to suppress in order for Bloodborne to play smoothly.
Like lighting and texture wise i think finals a bit better, but the way they placed the fog in the alpha version was so spookier, and like in the final it's like they took away the ground fog and just shoved it into the sky, which just muddies the beautiful architecture that was very visible in the alpha
The colors of the sky in the alpha are more dreamy, which would work in terms of narrative because the whole game it’s exactly that -more like a nightmare- the night in the final version feels more realistic in terms of color but not that much about the ambient perspective.I THINK somewhere between these two would be almost perfect.
I love how in the Alpha 0:05 & 1:27 (looking through the hunters legs and back) ,you can see more of the cities structure. In the Alpha you can see snowy mountain/ plain, the sea, and you can see how the buildings descend on a curved sloop. It gives a better scale of just how vast the world is and where exactly Central Yharnam is located.
Final version actually wins for me pretty easy. Environment looks darker, more populated with architecture, more natural lighting. While added fog on the ground in Alpha is cool, it has a weird kind of glow to it. Also everything is kind of...green in Alpha. Both are beautiful, of course.
The Alpha version makes central yharnam really look like a creepy, victorian city but the final version makes it look more like a nightmare. Ultimately i think the final is better but it would be interesting to play the game with the alpha graphics
Bloodborne has a truly dynamic lighting system, light bends around objects and they cast shadows; change their positioning even to a slight degree, and suddenly an area covered in shadows is illuminated; and this goes vice versa too. Hence why people say the light is dark and the dark is light, (an exaggeration still somewhat true). By the way, the slider at the beginning of these games: adjust it until the image on the left is near invisible while the image on the right is clear, people often ignore this but it has a huge effect
Wish they'd stuck with the less saturated and more stylized look for the HP and stamina bars, just make them thicker so they'd pop more and they'd be perfect. Current ones just lack the same charm as the alpha versions which almost resemble thin vials of liquid.
Alpha looks so much better. 1:20 Look at the bricks in the walls in alpha, you can practically feel the texture. Release version seems flat like glass.
@@damianwozniak3946 I'm pretty sure the alpha version does have better textures. They probably had to make them a little worse for it to run better on the ps5's limited hardware.
It's not exactly in the Final version when we arrive at Yharman is still day (golden hour) while in the beta is already night. You can see the gate close at 1:47 and the Cleric Beast at 4:39. So in the final version you can see Yahrman during the golden hour, and it's absolutely amazing, it also gives the sense of coming to a city after a long travel. You can also see Hemick Charnel Lane during the last hours of the day and it's also beautiful. BTW i also like the sky in the beta looks a bit like the Boreal Valley of DS3.
the Alpha version feels cold and empty, yes I know it's the Alpha version but with the clear sky it feels like it saying it's okay to wander off into the night while having this ominous feeling with the fog lingering on the ground
Awesome! I find it strange how no one noticed in the alpha we interact with a chair instead of a lamp! It kind of explains why micolash was sitting on a chair like that as i think in the lore he was trying to get into the dream
Alpha version's green fog and coloring gave the city a more sickly atmosphere, quite befitting of a city riddled with the sickly residents being turned into beasts, to the point that the city itself has fallen ill. Final version's cooler white and blue tones give off the vibe of low, frigid temperatures in the dead of night, and reinforce the isolation of your character, alone as one of few hunters. I love both, and both fit so well. I just wish that the wind on the Cleric Beast bridge had remained, along with more similar environmental effects.
Alphas lighting and skybox certainly look prettier and create better contrast. The darkness hides any concessions to get the frame rate up . Both look great.
I prefer the way the distant buildings looked in the alpha, the silhouette is so striking against the sky. They blend in a bit too much in the final i think, not nearly as imposing. and of course the ground fog is sorely missed. otherwise the final is still fantastic so i can't really complain much
Best game ever. Regardless if it’s dark souls or Elden Ring. In those games you’re always too late for the party. You arrive after all the cool stuff happened. In bloodborne, you’re there while stuff happens. You uncover their secrets to quote from the game. Everything is better in bloodborne than in any other game on the market. Atmosphere, world design, lore, music, weapon design, armor design and and and and. The mood this game has is unbelievable. And unlike dark souls and Elden ring, it has the aggressive combat. No enemies with stupid shields or 10 bosses with the same moveset. Or the same enemy types just different outfits. No „here is the ice level, here is the lava level“ it feels soo organic. Ahh bloodborne is so perfect. But it must get a 60fps remaster. Ps: I love every game From has ever made. But in comparison to Bloodborne, all their other games are nothing to me. Regardless how big and pretty to look at they are. The npc quests and lore of bloodborne are more interesting than the whole story of Elden ring xD
Wow, this is really cool looking at the differences! Is it me or does it feel like the alpha version's filter and rendering they used similar to the trailer/opening of the game? It's more saturated in color and contrast with the blue filter over it so it feels cinematic, while the final gave it that grungier look making everything more gothic. Thanks for sharing!
Alpha Yharnam is a dead city filled with eldritch horrors stalking on the hunter in every step. Final Yharnam is a chaotic city riddled with beastly curses, a perfect place for a night of the hunt.
Interesting that neither feels better than the other, just different. Certain things about the alpha I prefer over the final and vice versa. The low fog of the alpha is a nice touch and the way the sky turns the distant rooftops into more of an ominous silhouette, I quite like. The overall colour of the final I do prefer though, less of a green tint to it.
Great! I would like to see another video on Sekiro demo vs Final version Edit: It was obvious to me this section of the game was meant to be played at night. look at the bluish reflections of metals
The fog looks great, but didn’t stayed probably, as I said, to technical limitations. Or maybe it bothered the eyesight of the player in some encounters.
All I'm saying is that the full game should have had the Amygalada casting a shadow over Cathedral Ward. That was like the #1 thing that had me hyped about this game pre-release.
It seems like the alpha version was pushed back by hardware limitations, fromsoftware really is smart and it seems that they made up the hardware limitations with stylistic changes that surpass for the most part the alpha version without being that demanding, that said some of the effects in the alpha were fantastic and I would love to see them revived.
Alpha might run 1080p 60fps. Btw in the alpha the spookiness of the environment were surreal, and out of the world, 3 out of 5 person who tested it first hand went crazy over the period of just 28 hours later they've just encountered the cleric beast and then keep dying and dying cu's the door behind cleric beast area was actually accessible by then. For somewhat unknown reasons, which is still unclear to the dev team even today, the testers are intensely drawn to that door, looking for a shortcut that would eventually lead them to Oedon chapel - ultimately skipping the big dady, Chadd of the Yharnam, father Gascoigne, keep refusing to git gud and explore the rest of the fuc*ing area instead.
When I tried bloodborne many years ago I could barely play it because I couldn't see anything. The alpha version is so much more visible and prettier. I would even bet that it runs smoother too, because it seems to have less effects going on.
I like the bloom in the final version but I like the black levels of the alpha a little more. I like the final product, but it'd be cool to add a few visual tweaks from the alpha.
I honestly like the lighter colour of the sky in the Alpha more, the gothic city skyline is more strongly silhoetted, which makes the outline more striking, but obscures more detail of some of the buildings which I quite like, makes them feel all the more like these ominous looming dark shapes. The fog on the streets would've also been nice to see in the final game but I suppose environmental effects like that may have been dialed back for performance reasons. Ultimately what I think is most the shame is in the final game you don't really have a reason to visit Central Yharnam in the main nighttime time of day, you transverse it primarily during the evening time of day, which unfortunately makes many of the streets look more brown and dreary, while the later night looks more spooky and ethereal to me which I like. It would've been cool if partway through the game new enemies appeared in Central Yharnam linked the Lovcraftian twist in the game's narrative, giving you a reason to return and explore at a different time of day. I still think Central Yharnam might be the best designed area in terms of layout.
Hey guys, tell me your favorite Great One (Rom, Ebrietas, Kos, Mergo, the Emissary, Amygdala, Moon Presence, Oeden, ...etc). Mine is Amygdala, what about you?
Aesthetically speaking, i think Moon Presence, Ebrietas and Amygdala are the best ones. Regarding the lore, Moon Presence is awesome, as well as the tragedy of Kos and the "torture" of Ebrietas. In terms of gameplay, i think Amygdala is the clearest and funniest one to play.
The contrast between the darker skyline and the clearer moon sky of the Alpha version has its charm. But overall Final version feels more refined, "grounded" you could say.
I have a weird color blindness where I can't differentiate between some purples, blues and greys, which is the main color palette of Bloodborne. I have a love hate relationship with Bloodborne because of this. The gameplay is fantastic, but I so much of everything is just the same color so I get lost, miss items and sometimes can't even see NPC's, especially if it is dark. I wish they would have stuck with the Alpha version because the colors are just different enough that I can actually see the details. It seems like it has more greens or something. I've never understood why people think Bloodborne is a beautiful looking game because I can't see half of it, but the Alpha version is absolutely gorgeous. I want to play that version so much.
Why are you asking for the reason peoole believe Bloodborne looks fantastic when you know that you have a weird form of color blindness? I mean to me the final version looks better with the exceptions of ground fog and shadows, but I also don't have any issue with differentiating things, as I guess most people do. Aldo the alpha has this weird green filter from Demon's Souls that I personally don't like.
Pretty impressive that some of the most notable differences are really just the heavier fog and while i'd like the version with less of it for visibilities sake I can't argue that the higher amount makes the world seem less welcoming (in a good way) than the alpha.
This game is such a freakin masterpiece. Sony... Please... PLEASE don't even make a remake (the art and engine hardly aged!) but release Bloodborne on PS5/PC with 60FPS patch and higher resolution. That's it.

The fog really fits the atmosphere of the game wish they would have kept it.
we will have the fog with mods (man, I wish so much for a port)
Fog would be nice but I think the fog here is too bright and doesn't really match well with the lighting of the surroundings.
Even the hud looks so much better Imo
@@ThePixelgrapher I bet they removed it for framerate's sake, and because it's the first area of the game, so good visibility was probably a concern.

It's more saturated in color and contrast with the blue filter over it so it feels cinematic, while the final gave it that grungier look making everything more gothic. Thanks for sharing!
I think this is the only game for me that really deserves a remaster.
Was expecting some art direction shifts but it's mostly just revised shader work, it seems.
The chair as a lantern placeholder was cute though
I swear there's fog in the final version, amount of times I've missed items because of it is unreal.
Great! I would like to see another video on Sekiro demo vs Final version
Edit: It was obvious to me this section of the game was meant to be played at night. look at the bluish reflections of metals
Alpha vs final vs PC RELEASE
We definitely need that fog modded back in.
I always thought Bloodborne had 2 colors: Grey and "You can't see shit"
God this needs a remaster so so so badly
Looks amazing
The fog looks great, but didn’t stayed probably, as I said, to technical limitations. Or maybe it bothered the eyesight of the player in some encounters.
this game looks so good to me in either version play the crap out of it when it came out.
The improvement was nothing short of massive. Alpha looks like Irithyll of the Plastic Valley.
Ubisoft should take a note.
Alpha looked highly atmospheric with the extra fog and lighting effects, but overall the final had more balanced LoD on the whole image.
I like more visually the final version, but the alfa version feels more... Like... Cold, and i like that feel in bloodborne
Hey guys, tell me your favorite Great One (Rom, Ebrietas, Kos, Mergo, the Emissary, Amygdala, Moon Presence, Oeden, ...etc).
Mine is Amygdala, what about you?
I don't know, every pick is a Great One
Aesthetically speaking, i think Moon Presence, Ebrietas and Amygdala are the best ones. Regarding the lore, Moon Presence is awesome, as well as the tragedy of Kos and the "torture" of Ebrietas. In terms of gameplay, i think Amygdala is the clearest and funniest one to play.
Kosm
I rembember when THE O.G Bloodborne came-out in 98
I’m kinda loving the Alpha version on most of these
The contrast between the darker skyline and the clearer moon sky of the Alpha version has its charm. But overall Final version feels more refined, "grounded" you could say.
I’m going to become an infant great one waiting on the 60fps patch
Sometimes I forget how good this game looks
They really aren't that different, but the final version feels so much bigger and more grand to me.
Pretty impressive that some of the most notable differences are really just the heavier fog and while i'd like the version with less of it for visibilities sake I can't argue that the higher amount makes the world seem less welcoming (in a good way) than the alpha.
Cool video idea, well put together 👌 Greetings from Germany ✌
The alpha lighting reminds me of demon's souls.
Final version has atmosphere.
Alpha version has precision.
Myiazaki probably thought we could see too much and it was making the experience too easy. Classic fuckery from him.
I would kill for a Bloodborne remaster on the PS5, this game would look even better with more particle effects and a higher resolution
This game is such a freakin masterpiece. Sony... Please... PLEASE don't even make a remake (the art and engine hardly aged!) but release Bloodborne on PS5/PC with 60FPS patch and higher resolution. That's it.
I am still praying for a 60fps patch...
Imagine if the game got a remake with the demon soul’s graphics
I always get this Van Helsing feel from the game!
the question is when the fak are we finally getting bloodborne two for more self-torture. WE ARE READY.
