In his own words, "the first Possessed records had a hellish sound to it". There's no better description to it. Possessed _is_ an early black metal act.
@@conde_bathory that's always been my take too. I'm not one to actively call bullshit on people calling them early death metal: they were an American band from the thrash scene from the early-mid '80s with a song called 'Death Metal' and gruff vocals. So, from a cultural standpoint, I'm totally fine as them having a spot in death metal history, and they did inspire a lot of death metal after them. And I think that matters. BUT, stylistically, I hear something much more similar to black metal. They had these ferocious, dark and hypnotic riffs.
It's like people who praise Venom's Black Metal album (simply because of its name) when Welcome to Hell was better and more influential, not to mention first. Possessed were important, but more for the Death Metal name than for any musical sea-change.
Possessed had the first song mentioning "death metal" but it's kinda like how when Venom said "black metal"... yeah they said it first, but they weren't really making a new genre there. I mean Venom pretty much created thrash, but not really black metal as a separate genre. I suppose the "first wave" of both black and death is just thrash metal with a new label and only the "second wave" is a new genre honestly

I even cried when I heard the song "13 Candles" from "Under The Sign..." two years later. These are unforgettable moments.
