  • A walking tour in 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗶 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗶, region 𝕋𝕦𝕤𝕔𝕒𝕟𝕪, central Italy, province of 𝓢𝓲𝓮𝓷𝓪, a town of about 1.500 inhabitants.
Just literally days after this video was filmed, a trove of 24 bronze statues was discovered during excavations at the ancient Roman baths nearby.
They were also covered by about 6,000 ancient bronze, silver and gold coins, and were in an excellent state of preservation. They were hailed as the most significant find of their kind in 50 years.

The history of San Casciano is strictly connected to the presence of hot waters, with 42 springs, a mean temperature of 42 °C (108 °F) and a daily delivery of 5.5 million litres (1,500,000 US gal) (third in Europe).
The tradition has it that the Etruscan Lucumone of Chiusi Porsenna founded the "Bagni Chiusini", appreciated and frequented later also by the Romans................

This video fills me with a certain melancholy. Permit me to elaborate. Between 1976 and 2019, I had the privilege of visiting Europe a total of eighteen times. I went just about everywhere that might have been on any 'bucket list' I might have concocted.
On the last three trips, twice in 2018 and once in 2019, I went 'solo'. All by myself. I was 69 at the time and doing so was technically a bit of a risk from a health and safety standpoint. But I did it my way anyway and had a blast. That final journey in May of 2019 was to Tuscany, and after that, Covid 19 moved in and because of it and my advancing years, that trip might truly be my last.
It rained almost continually the last two days I was in the country, and I was cooped up in my room in Orvieto. Tiring of the confinement, I got into my little Fiat rental and began roaming the back roads and ended up in... San Casciano dei Bagni. Upon arrival I realized that I had left my umbrella back at the room, and the rain was unforgiving. Still, I made my way into the twisting back alleys of this wonderful little town, using my Canon 5D to shoot photos between the raindrops. The rain became so heavy I just gave it up. Many months later when the virus shutdown access to Europe it sunk in to me that this little town was the last place in Europe I'd ever set foot in.
Thank you Riccardo, for your consistently wonderful work , your persistence in preventing no back alley no matter how steep and winding from hiding from your lens, (to say nothing of your footsteps) and helping to keep my personal memories fresh...😀👍👍👍

Dear Ken, very happy to see you back. Most of all, I was very touched by your story and to think that indeed this was the last town you visited in Italy... but never say never as they say; I'm sure you'll have more chances to visit again, especially as these days things are getting back to normality more or less. And your will is so strong as I always read from you; to be honest I'm always quite impressed by the knowledge you possess about these italian towns. It's not everyday that I can see some tourist or from somebnody from abroad know so much about so many of them... Always very impressed by this.
I hope I was able to show San Casciano then in a different light and in a typical autumn setting then. I'm sure though that with rain it would be absolutely interesting as well.
I filmed a town in north of Lazio months ago when it was cloudy and raining... until now I wasn't sure to upload it as it's a different kind of "walk" indeed like that... but perhaps one day I will. Maybe in winter.
Wish you a nice weekend dear Ken and thank you so much for sharing such a personal memory here.
      See you soon then

Another seemingly "deserted" town when you walk "inside" except for the area of Piazza Matteotti. But with interesting history (where in Italy doesn't have history😉). And now with the discovery of the bronzes will surely attract more visitors. Great video, Riccardo, come sempre!🤗👍

I was there last week and took a guided tour of the archeological dig with one of the archeologists. Not to be missed, but wait til the end of the year when the statues return from restauration in Grosseto. The most important archeological site in Italy today. Beware the Rome prices in the restaurants though. Expensive town with a 5 star luxury hotel.

Sei toscano, Riccardo ? Grazie per il video. Saluti.
